The lotus flowers in Shinobazu Pond had not yet bloomed. (I went there in mid-June 2023) The best time to see the lotus flowers is July and August, so it was a little disappointing that they had not yet bloomed, but the white hydrangeas were beautifully blooming. I also went to Bentendo, which enshrines Benzaiten, a goddess of fertility, on an artificial island in the large Shinobazu Pond. After praying at Bentendo, I looked out over Shinobazu Pond from the side, and the green lotus flowers were very beautiful. There are lotuses blooming around the area and there are fun games and snacks for sale on the bridge side, so I was able to indirectly experience a scene from a festival that I would have seen in a Japanese animation.

This temple is unique because of its octagonal building located on a lotus pond. The front shrine is a place for worship and Japanese lanterns are hung on the wooden railings. During the dry season, the lotus in the pond blooms, contrasting with the buildings behind. In the autumn, the lotus wilts over time. In the winter, the water freezes, reflecting the temple. This temple is dedicated to the god of prosperity, who is worshipped in both Buddhism and Shinto, so it is a temple and Benten Shrine in the same place.

This is a popular Buddhist temple among locals. I love seeing the beautiful, bright and colourful hexagonal tower, the architecture was awesome. The temple is located in the middle of Shinobazu Pond, and can be easily seen from Ueno Park. You just need to walk down the stairs and cross the road, next to Ueno Zoo, surrounded by a beautiful lotus pond. It is home to Benzaiten, a Japanese Buddhist goddess, originating from the Hindu Saraswati, the goddess of the arts, knowledge and wisdom. Local people pray to her for success in examination and good fortune. Interestingly, there are a lot of lucky charms sold in the temple, including cute pandas. Panda merchandise is so popular in the Ueno area, you can see them in a lot of places. Worth visiting if you happen to be in Ueno Park. In that area are various religious sites like the Shinobazu Pond Benten Temple, which is illuminated by numerous lanterns and the Shinobazu Pond Benten Daikokutendo, dedicated to the deity of fortune and wealth. During our visit, even at night there are still a lot of visitors which is there for sight seeing like us, or just offering some prayers and incense. Kan'ei-ji Temple was built by Tenkai Daisojo, the great priest of Jigen, during the Kan'ei era in the early Edo period. To resemble the area around Kyoto, Shinobazu Pond was made into Lake Biwa, and a small island modeled after Chikubushima Island in the pond was built in the middle of the pond, and the Bentendo Hall was built to enshrine Benzaiten from Hogon-ji Temple on Chikubushima Island. 　 In the past, worshippers would use a boat to get to the temple, but now there is a bridge!
