By chance I saw an ad for buy one get one free Wagyu beef to celebrate the grand opening. Actually, I went for the authentic Chongqing Jiugongge and dry dishes, beef bean curd sheets, mixed noodles and ice jelly.
We rushed to the scene straight after get off work on a weekday and waited for 40 minutes. We were one table short so we planned to come earlier next time! Fortunately, the ladies at the counter and outside were kind enough to accommodate the two of us at an extra table!
The entrance to the Japanese izakaya with a loud noise! The Chongqing hotpot restaurant started with a Japanese izakaya greeting, and Sasha and I thought we were going to have a catastrophe! When I asked the waiter at the table, I found out that Mala 45 is a new brand of Ganbei Group! I instantly felt no discomfort with that greeting!
It is said to be the first pure Wagyu beef oil hot pot base paired with spices imported from Chongqing! Plus the nine-square grid that has been passed down in Chongqing for a hundred years!
Because there was a buy one get one free Wagyu beef period, Sister Sha visited us twice before the event ended! For the picky eater Sasa, the second visit was definitely not for the buy-one-get-one-free wagyu beef! And let her experience the wonderful spicy hot pot and get to know Wanglaoji again!
For basic ordering, I suggest you skip the shuangyuan hotpot and go for the spicy 9-square grid. Be sure to add the dry sauce (15 yuan), top up with cilantro, green onion, garlic and pair with the sesame oil sauce (free). Wanglaoji with ice (80 yuan), join Kanpai membership and get a free draft beer first! It's so easy to open the pot.
Recommended dishes: Spicy Four Treasures (Signature! Five-second beef tongue (280 yuan, crisp duck intestines 100 yuan/M-200/L, crispy hairy beef tripe (beef tripe) 140 yuan/M-280 yuan/L, fresh pig throat 100 yuan/M-200 yuan/L), except for the hairy beef tripe, it is recommended to go straight to L, the other three items can be increased according to personal needs. I personally order M!
Vegetables: Gongcai 160 yuan, lotus root 88 yuan, potato chips.
Main course: a bowl of mixed noodles. For those who love to eat, plain white rice is the best choice, topped with sesame oil. Add cilantro, onion and garlic according to personal preference. Pour the wagyu butter on the bottom of the pot! Three bowls is not an exaggeration!
Meat: In summary, the buy one get one free offer on Wagyu beef is purely for the purpose of satisfying satiety. You can also choose a combination of tender beef to fill your protein needs! It all depends on personal preference!
Bizarre dish: Pig brain costs 120 yuan, no explanation needed!
As for the spiciness, the Chongqing spicy nine-square grid is of course really spicy! The spices such as Dahongpao pepper, Sichuan pepper, old ginger and other spices in the pot emit a charming aroma when heated together with the Wagyu butter! After the ingredients are boiled in Sichuan, they are accompanied by the aroma of wagyu butter and the mellow oil of sesame oil, which perfectly wraps up the hotness and spiciness of the hot pot and sends it to the mouth, impacting the stomach buds with a strong and heavy taste. Sasha, who has a low tolerance for the pain of chili, can enjoy the shocking feeling brought by Chongqing spicy food one bite after another. I was worried that she would find it too spicy! Wanglaoji is on standby! This dining experience has become Sister Sha’s new favorite! Remember to add ice! To be honest, I don’t think it’s spicy! I also add ghost pepper to the dry sauce! (You can ask the store for it if you need it)!
Continuing the tradition of Kanpai, there are waiters serving at the table! We cook the dishes for the customers and introduce them one by one, satisfying the curiosity and sense of home of new customers! In fact, it is to master the dining rhythm of each table! But I personally like to cook hot pot at my own pace, slowly enjoying the taste and experience of each ingredient.
Those who often eat spicy hotpot, especially Haidilao, should be familiar with the four spicy treasures! I won’t go into details about the taste, these four dishes basically only require fresh ingredients and proper processing! It won’t be that bad! The taste is relatively imaginable! If there is a downside, it is that the portion could be a bit more! It's easy to accidentally order a double L!
The dishes are amazing! Tribute vegetables! Before coming to Mala45, I had only seen it on TV and in books! I only know that it is related to Emperor Qianlong! I have no idea what it is exactly! This is the first time! Simply put, Gongcai is a vegetable processed product like dried bamboo shoots and dried radishes that is exposed to the sun and dehydrated to extend its shelf life while increasing its taste and flavor! It doesn’t matter what dish it is! It tastes crispy and refreshing, and is perfect for cooking with spicy hot pot! There is no need to introduce lotus root slices and potato chips! A must-order dish at Chongqing Spicy Hotpot. You will know why after you try it!
The bowl of mixed noodles was also an unexpected treat. Just like Gongcai, it was a pity we had not met each other earlier!
The ice jelly as a dessert can be said to be the highlight. A simple bowl of glutinous rice balls and red date jelly, the refreshing feeling dispels the greasiness of the spicy hot pot. A nice finishing touch to the dining table.
Remember to ask the waiter to filter the bottom of the pot and pack it up before leaving! The exquisite sealed packaging ensures that the beef-filled pot will not leak out, and a small packet of noodles is also included! When you get home, you can use the heated pot base to have a bowl of Chongqing noodles whether you refrigerate or freeze it! PS This was the first time I didn’t pack up the soup base, and the unique and rich Chongqing spicy aroma lingered until the next day! Only then will you have the packaging experience for the second visit!
The checkout amount for both times was around 3600, and the average price per person was around 1600-1800! Not cheap but worth a try!
Postscript: The review was downgraded after three visits! The taste of the dishes has been adjusted! The obvious differences are that the bowl of mixed noodles is spicy, the rice is a bit soft, the duck intestines have a slight fishy smell, and the hairy beef tripe is cut too finely, which affects the personal taste! The taste of ice powder seems to be lighter! This time I finally understood why the table service was so diligent in picking out peppercorns and other spices from the pot during the opening! Because it was cooked for too long, the lotus root slices became bitter!
