Real and ungentrified
Shantou is a port side city in the province of Guangdong. Being one of the many treaty ports opened during the Qing dynasty, it was a center of international trading. As such, the area now houses signs of this historic presence.
The historic part of Shantou is not as touristy as one might expect; many of the historic buildings in the center are lightly restored, but nothing is really remade to look fake and overly gentrified. In fact, many of them lie abandoned and in ruins. For me, I find this adds character to the overall area, as there's a sense of authenticity among these buildings that tell stories of their past. There's a small park in the area, which serves as the main focal point of the area.
You can't leave the Old town without venturing a bit further to sample the famous Shantou beef balls. Many of the restaurants make them on site and you'll see them beating the beef, resulting in a very chewy textured beef ball that you can't get enough of!
Overall, Shantou is a historic city with many buildings with character. You'll get lost wandering the old streets that are lined with buildings that have seen better days! Don't leave the city without grabbing a bowl (or two or three) of its famous beef balls!

Shantou trip.
First time in Shantou for people from Dongguan, hehe!!!||📍Shantou route
🚌D1: Shantou Small Park → Shantou Hostel → Xidi Park → Plaza Ferry
🏣 Former Shantou Post Office: Established in 1897, it was the first self-built post office in Shantou since the port opened, and one of the first 25 post offices in China.
🏠 Shantou Small Park: A witness to Shantou's "century-old commercial port" history, with a unique circular radial road network structure and a blend of Chinese and Western arcade buildings.
⛴️ Plaza Ferry: The combination of the ferry and the sunset over the bay is really romantic, and the best part is that it only costs one yuan to board!

No way!!! You can't miss the local guide of Shantou
The old town is not just about the small park. Besides the small park, there are many buildings with the architectural style of the Republic of China. I want to take everyone to walk around our Shantou ❤️
Route recommendation 🚶♀️ Former General Affairs Office of Chaoshan Railway Park ➡️ Former Site of Shantou Mansion ➡️ Red Pavilion ➡️ 24h Color Coffee opposite ➡️ Chaoshan Wharf
(These places are all in one area and not too far apart, but if walking is too tiring, you can ride a shared bike)
Former General Affairs Office of Chaoshan Railway Company
A very retro building 🏯 next to the fire station. Enter the gate and keep turning right around the building to see the railway where you can take photos. There are also benches to rest.
Former Site of Shantou Mansion
Navigate to this location to reach No. 3 Mansion. On the way, you will also pass through the small park, which is not very interesting and crowded. You can take photos and learn about history at nearby places like the post office 📪 and museum, but the surroundings are still crowded.
Red Pavilion
Red Pavilion Garden is a memory for us old city people. When we were kids, we had to go there for injections. It feels like a mini version of the small park pavilion. If you want to take photos but are afraid of crowds, you can go here.
Opposite the 24h Coffee Shop
Pictures 13 and 14 are of an old building wall opposite the coffee shop. In the afternoon, it has a great vibe. Pictures 15 and 16 are of the white exterior wall at the entrance of the coffee shop, which is also very photogenic. If it's too hot, you can go inside for a cup of coffee.
Fisherman's Wharf
We used to go to Xidi Park to watch the sunset and the rock bridge. Now the government has built a new Fisherman's Wharf. It's nice to walk around and take photos.

Shantou Old Town, a city that allows you to travel back to the Republic of China era!
During the summer vacation, I took my child to visit Chaoshan. The itinerary included Chaozhou Ancient City, Nan'ao Island, and Shantou Old Town as the last stop. We drove into the old town via Binhai Road, and a sudden heavy rain fell. The streets were deserted, and many shops were closed, giving a desolate feeling. Having visited so many ancient cities, this was the first time I had seen such a desolate old town. My family said that Chaoshan people are all making money in Shenzhen and probably only come back during the holidays. As usual, we had beef hotpot, walked to the Little Red Pavilion, and along the street, there was a strong Republic of China vibe. It felt like traveling back in time. What came to mind more were some dilapidated buildings in the back. Knowing that such beautiful houses could be built back then, our predecessors must have spent their entire fortunes, hoping for a century-long legacy. But in the end, time takes its toll. So, coming to this world, nothing is permanent. Just live well in the present. You can't take anything with you. Nothing in this world belongs to you personally. Only memories, painful or joyful, are your personal possessions!

🍽Catering recommendations
Shantou
1. Wu Ji Fu Yuan (Chaoyang Branch): The best choice for pickled seafood! Closed at noon❗Starts at 5pm, super popular🔥It is recommended to arrive before 5:30, otherwise you will have to wait for a long time to order.
2. Fangji Hongshun Beef Hotpot (Lian Road Branch): Not far from the small park, it’s a casual street shop. The store is not big and you don’t seem to have to wait for a table. The beef is super fresh. I highly recommend the five-flower toe and specialty movies. Key handle!
3. Ye Ji Sunan Braised Goose: The braised goose store downstairs in the community, the foie gras, goose heads and goose paws are amazing! ! Especially the foie gras melts in your mouth and tastes even better when dipped in garlic and white vinegar sauce! The goose meat is also good ~ the store can also help with SF Express shipping, so you can take the delicious food home and continue to show off 😋
4. Guantang Beef Offal Rice Noodles (Xiaoyuan Branch): Affordable and affordable shop, the owner is very enthusiastic, and the beef portion is super generous
5. Kuey Ran Lee Kee Kueh Juice: The 20 Yuan Kuey Koo provided by the store is a big bowlful ~ It’s so satisfying
Chaozhou
1. Guantang Brothers Beef Hotpot (Kaiyuan Branch): In the ancient city of Chaozhou, not far from Archway Street and Kaiyuan Temple, the taste is pretty good, but I personally feel it is not as delicious as the five-flowered toes I ate in Shantou. The overall meat quality is okay.
2. Lei Kee Kway Teow Noodle Rice Roll: Near the entrance of Pai Fang Street, the oyster rice roll is delicious and the portion is quite generous.
3. Chao Guangji Casserole Porridge (Paifang Street Main Store): Scallop paste crab porridge is super delicious ❗The side dishes are also very unique~
4. There are also fermented fermented chicken wings and duck mother twist which are also delicious. You can buy them randomly on Pai Fang Street. I forgot the name. There are many similar snack bars. You can try more ❤️
🛏Accommodation suggestions
Shantou: The hotels near Vientiane City are relatively new, the surroundings are prosperous and convenient, and it is not too far to go to the old city attractions;
Chaozhou: It’s within 2 kilometers of Guangji Bridge or the ancient city, and it’s also convenient to take a taxi ~
📝Note tips:
1. It is recommended to check the weather forecast before going to Nan'ao Island. It is best to go to the island on sunny or cloudy days. The scenery on rainy days is indeed not ideal, but it has its own characteristics.
2. Shantou Old Town and Chaozhou Old Town are super suitable for citywalk. Eat and drink enough, and just look at the navigation or road signs and stroll around slowly ~ Just remember to pay attention to traffic safety when walking, including electric vehicles and automobile attractions are concentrated, even if you go in the wrong direction You don’t have to worry about straying too far when you know the route.
3. It is not recommended to eat too much every meal, leave some space for snacks on the road hahaha
4. Chaoshan Station is a "point" away from Chaozhou City. It takes about 40 minutes without traffic jams. Those who are rushing to catch the train should pay attention to the time~

Impressions of Shantou
Visiting Shantou, we took the high-speed train from Shanghai, which was very convenient. This time we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Shantou Chaoyang, where the environment and services were all very satisfactory. The old town of Shantou is definitely worth a visit, with its ancient architecture and a variety of delicious food, it truly made me feel reluctant to leave.

Two consecutive days, Shantou Super Live is back!
Date: 2024.02.02-02.03
Location: Shantou Sports Center Stadium
Who doesn't know that Shantou has a music festival again! This time it's a two-day lineup, with Wang Leehom, Zhang Yuan, and Yan Renzhong all being your favorites! Don't hesitate to pack your bags and meet in Shantou! When you come to Shantou, besides the delicious food, these attractions are really worth checking out, and the old town of Nan'ao Island welcomes you~
1. Nan'ao Island
The landscape of Nan'ao Island is naturally beautiful. Due to less development, the environment is well protected, and many mountains, rocks, and vegetation still retain their original appearance. The beach scenery is also very beautiful, making it a niche spot for taking photos. In addition, there are some historical relics on the island that you can visit in your spare time.
2. Shantou Old Town
In the old town area on the north bank of the Rong River in Shantou City, from the Shantou Xidi Wharf to the Waimalu entrance, a 1-kilometer road is lined with a large number of buildings constructed in the early 20th century. This is Shantou Old Town. The 'arcades' on the side of the road for sheltering from the rain, the closely arranged shops, the slightly messy streets, and the simple decorative patterns near the doors and windows all reveal the unique historical charm of Shantou Old Town.
3. Que Shi Scenic Area
The Que Shi Scenic Area is located on the bank of the Rong River. The area is filled with peculiar peaks and rocks, accompanied by the charm of the sea view, forming a scenic spot where Shantou's natural scenery and cultural landscape complement each other. The scenic area is divided into six areas: Xiao Shi Scenic Area, Ta Mountain Scenic Area, Yan Peak Scenic Area, Xianglu Mountain Scenic Area, Bijia Mountain Scenic Area, and Su'an Scenic Area.

✨Shantou Hostel
The actual situation is that there are too many people! We took pictures next door, there are also the words "Shantou", it doesn't feel different, maybe because there are shops below so no one.
✨Small Park
The nearby are all Nanyang style buildings, also typical arcade buildings, the landmark of Shantou old city area, very lively!
✨Xidi Park
Fuyuan building is very photogenic, with a taste of the Republic of China, this is also a good place to watch the sunset.
✨Huo Shi Scenic Area
The main reason to go here is that you can see Shantou city area from the top of the mountain, and you can take a cable car up and down the mountain, 25 one-way, 40 round trip.

After coming down from Huo Shi Scenic Area, take a one yuan ferry back to the city area, just in the evening, watching the sunset on the sea is super beautiful.

Small Park, Shantou Museum, Inner Bay Night Tour
Around the small park, the strong Republican-style buildings seem to tell the story of the years, the streets and alleys are full of carefully designed check-in points, attracting tourists to stop and take pictures.
Coming to the Inner Bay Cruise Terminal, boarding the cruise ship started an unforgettable night tour at sea. Under the lights, Shantou's Inner Bay is poetic and picturesque, with the city skyline and the sparkling water surface reflecting each other, making people linger.
We were attracted by the dazzling night view of the Shantou Huashi Bridge. This bridge, which spans the Inner Bay formed by the confluence of the Lianjiang, Rongjiang, and Hanjiang Rivers, was opened to traffic in early 1999. Its majestic and magnificent posture was a architectural miracle in the 1990s. The cruise ship shuttles through it, and the passengers scramble to record this moment of interlacing light and shadow.
The next morning, I went to the Shantou Museum. The rich collections in the museum fully demonstrate the cultural heritage of the Chaoshan region. Among them, the Chaoshan Money House Exhibition Hall records the unique style of local financial history in detail. Shantou Museum Shantou Small Park Shantou Inner Bay Cruise Ship

Shantou Three-Day Guide | A schedule of eating, drinking, and playing without delay
I stayed in Shantou for 48 hours, ate and drank in 20 restaurants, and also visited parks, took ferries, climbed Que Mountain, and took cable cars without missing anything. Here is my three-day efficient itinerary~

I will talk about eating and drinking later
Let's talk about some small suggestions for strolling
You must ride a shared electric bike, from a person who doesn't have a shared electric bike in their city, I really envy it, it's really convenient, free and happy
Take the cable car down from the tower on Que Shi, overlooking the city and the bay, it's beautiful
The sunset was at 17:26 the day before yesterday, we took the 17:00 ferry back from Que Shi Pier, and finally watched the sun set by the pier. The ferry departs every hour, 20 minutes, and 40 minutes, each trip takes about 15mins, if you want to watch the sunset, check the time in advance, and plan the queue time on weekends
Visiting parks is a must-do item for me in every city, so after breakfast, I went to Zhongshan Park for a stroll, it's a park with a life atmosphere, and I also rowed a boat on Yu Jian Lake, with an empty stomach ready to eat the next meal
I originally planned a long time for the old city of Shantou, but then I rode a bike for a stroll and left. I'm not interested in check-in photos, so I personally think it's meaningless, you can skip it
The weather in Shantou is just right now, not cold or hot, it's a city suitable for slowing down and strolling slowly~

Shantou Old Street: Hard to hide the prosperity of the past
Chaozhou and Shantou. Ancient Chaozhou was developed, and modern Shantou took the lead.
Shantou Old City, the core area is called 'Small Park', which is a fan-shaped group of buildings from the Republic of China, and it still exudes endless charm.
Shantou is one of the important starting ports of the Maritime Silk Road in China, and it is also the only city in the mainland of China with an inland sea.
The arcade buildings and streets are distributed in a fan-shaped radiation, which is unique to Shantou.
The prosperous commercial streets of the past, dotted with many footprints and old sites of the Chinese revolution.
Walking here, it is inevitable to have a sense of crossing. European style, Republic of China marks and red traffic line nodes.
Walking in the Small Park area, 2 hours is enough, half a day is normal. Shantou's rich and cheap Chaoshan cuisine can also keep you for a few more days.
