We visited Shanghai Zoo over Golden Week. I expected it to be full and overcrowded; however, it was not. The Zoo itself is quite massive and took a good few hours to walk around the entire park There are also golf carts if you aren’t up for the walk. There were many places to buy snacks and drinks as well as a restaurant. Children are also able to pet certain animals If you are in the city and looking for something to do with kids, then I would suggest the Zoo. It is also convenient to travel too as it is on the Metro line. You are also able to purchase tickets on their WeChat account before hand. I’d definitely recommend spending the day here

We went through the fish, reptile and amphibians area and they had most of the popular animals that would be great to extend learning for children and enjoy as adults too. After that we were led to a shuttle 🛺that costs 15/person and again free for children. The trip toom us to the Panda🐼 enclosure and basically all the other animals from all over the world!🦁🐯🦝🐮🦓🐴🦎🐢🐊🐍🦬🐐🦌🦘🦥🦙🐘🦏🦒🦍🦧🐿️ My daughter enjoyed it especially when we can buy popsicles 🍡at every turn. You need to get to Shanghai Zoo early on weekends❗️ We arrived at 9 AM, navigation 🧭: Shanghai Zoo Bus Hub. The parking lot is right across from the zoo entrance and very close. If you come late, the parking lot will be full (when we left at 1 PM, it showed full 🈵). Besides arriving early, it’s recommended to tour the zoo in reverse order: start with the primate area and end with the amphibian area. We found this to be very effective❗️ The advantage is that you can see the less commonly seen animal friends when there are fewer people—no need to squeeze through crowds 😁. Also, the animals are more active in the morning. When we finally reached the amphibian area, it was peak entry time in the afternoon, and the amphibian exhibit was packed with people, so we decisively gave up (I’m afraid of snakes anyway). Also, parents with kids should choose to ride the shuttle. We thought the zoo wasn’t big, but we enthusiastically walked around for 4 hours carrying a 21-pound kid 🥲 and ended up exhausted. For a World Class City, the Shanghai Zoo was second rate, but still OK, maybe better during the Summer times...yet some attention is still needed

You can truly always trust the early winter of this 71-year-old zoo. Rather than just coming to see animals, it's more like attending an early winter appointment that travels through time. Towering ancient trees have quietly stood here for more than half a century. Ginkgo leaves turn golden, maple leaves blaze red, and phoenix trees rustle softly. Sunlight filters through layers of branches and leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Every step you take presses down on a thick carpet of fallen leaves, creating crisp sounds. The color palette of this season is truly healing, from dark green to golden yellow, from orange-red to ochre. The Shanghai Zoo is a must-visit destination, especially for animal lovers. The adorable pandas and red pandas are absolutely charming, captivating visitors with their playful antics and fluffy appearances. However, it is concerning to note that the living conditions of some animals, such as the ostrich, bear, and peacock, seem to be less than ideal. This raises important questions about animal welfare that should not be overlooked. Additionally, the penguins were a delightful highlight of the visit. The African penguins, in particular, were incredibly cute and added a lively touch to the zoo experience. Unfortunately, I did not get to see the kangaroo, which was a bit of a disappointment. On the other hand, the market within the zoo was quite overpriced, making it challenging to enjoy snacks without feeling like you were overpaying. Despite these issues, the overall experience at the Shanghai Zoo was very enjoyable. The variety of animals and the opportunity to learn about them made it a memorable outing. The zoo offers a wonderful way to connect with nature and appreciate wildlife, making it a worthwhile visit for anyone in Shanghai.

Five dhole cubs born this spring at Shanghai Zoo are about to be exhibited, and they will soon be 10 months old! With the care of their mother "Dhole Million" and scientific feeding by the keepers, the cubs are strong and have shiny brown fur. They have a great appetite; keepers cut fresh beef, lamb, rabbit, and chicken into small pieces for them every day, and the cubs can finish it all in just a few minutes, with the crisp sound of them crunching bones like chewing on potato chips. To ensure the cubs grow healthily, the zoo regularly vaccinates them, deworms them, and supplements trace elements. The dhole exhibition is now in the final countdown, and the native animal area is undergoing ecological renovation, with a brand-new wilderness window about to open. Dholes were once widely distributed across Asia, but now over 75% of their historical range has lost their presence. Shanghai was once a traditional distribution area for them in East China, where they played an important role in the ecosystem. Local chronicles and oral histories from the older generation still record their presence. This exhibition of dholes in the native animal area will help more people learn about native species and pay attention to biodiversity. Recently, Shanghai Zoo successfully launched an innovative cohabitation project, exhibiting spotted necked quail alongside various Amazon parrots. The project creates a multi-layered composite ecosystem that simulates the native forest ecology of Central and South America, breaking away from the traditional single-species display model. The core highlight of the project lies in precise microhabitat construction and behavioral adaptation. The lower level of the exhibit is designed for the ground-dwelling spotted necked quail, featuring a mixed sandy soil substrate, concealed shrubs, and leaf litter to meet their foraging and dust-bathing needs. Their black crests and white spotted feathers on the neck sides become more prominent when clean. The upper level retains flight space for the tree-dwelling Amazon parrots, enriching perch structures and feeding device distribution to create a clear vertical ecological niche separation. Monitoring shows stable behavior in both bird species with no territorial aggression, resulting in excellent spatial resource complementarity. From November 22 to December 6, 2025, daily from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Shanghai Zoo will launch the "Footprint Trail" winter treasure hunt event. With the winter sunshine shining down, a treasure hunt game hidden in the little paws of animals begins. Participants can become "treasure hunt detectives," exploring the park to discover the "animal paw codes" and get to know the little animals anew. The highlight of the event is the unique treasure hunt gameplay. Participants first collect tools at the Exit Yuedong Space store, including a treasure hunt guide and randomly drawn clue cards. Then, based on the clues, they search for animal treasure cards in the park. Each clue card corresponds to three animals, with one being a hidden BOSS card that requires collecting a complete set of corresponding cards. Visitors can carefully observe the animals during the treasure hunt, experiencing the joy and surprise of exploration. After collecting the cards, head to the Exit Yuedong Space store to draw and redeem exciting prizes. Tool collection is available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM during the event, and the treasure hunt lottery ends at 5:00 PM on December 6. Come to Shanghai Zoo and start this fun treasure hunt journey!

With the cold wave hitting, Shanghai is enveloped in vibrant autumn colors, and the autumn atmosphere at Shanghai Zoo is even more intense. The golden plane trees, crimson sweet gums, and ginkgo leaves scattered like gold make every corner as beautiful as a painting. The animals appear more lively in this crisp autumn air. The flamingos' pink feathers shine brightly in the autumn light, the little chimpanzees sniff the seasonal signals among the fallen leaves, and the Asian elephants stroll through the woods, with the rustling leaves marking the passage of time. In the past few days, Shanghai Zoo keepers have been carrying cloth bags to collect the most beautiful fallen leaves, which will be used as high-quality natural bedding. For example, they will be given as an "autumn limited carpet" to the native Burmese tortoises. After disinfection and drying, the leaves are placed in the exhibition area to provide them with a "five-star hotel bedding experience." Fallen leaves as bedding play an important role. Dry leaves make a crisp sound and emit the fresh scent of grass and wood, stimulating the animals' senses and sparking their curiosity, making their lives full of novelty. They also encourage animal behaviors; the tortoises bury themselves for a sense of security and sift through the leaves to find food, simulating foraging in the wild.
