The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum commemorates the Jewish refugees who lived in Shanghai during World War II. It is located on the site of the former Moishe Synagogue in Shanghai's Hongkou District. The museum features documents, photographs, films, and personal items chronicling the lives of some of the more than 20,000 Jewish residents of the Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees, better known as the Shanghai Ghetto. Shanghai's history as an important location for the Jewish Diaspora is not well-known. When Western nations such as Britain, Canada, and the United States turned away Jews fleeing the Nazi terror, many were able to find safety and community in Shanghai. The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum is dedicated to persevering this history.
