[2025 Sofia Attraction] Travel Guide for Saint Nedelya Orthodox Cathedral (Updated Jul)

#Church #Eastern Europe #Bulgaria Located in the center of Sofia, Bulgaria, the Cathedral of Saint Nedelya dates back to the 10th century. Originally built as a small wooden church, it has been rebuilt several times due to natural disasters and historical events. The church was extensively expanded in the mid-19th century, but was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1858. The church was rebuilt and consecrated in 1867. In 1925, the church suffered a bomb attack that destroyed much of the structure and killed more than 150 people. The church was rebuilt again between 1927 and 1933 and restored to its present appearance. The architecture of the Cathedral of Saint Nedelya is an example of Byzantine Revival style. The existing building was designed by the famous Bulgarian architectural team Vasilyov and Tsolov and features a grand central dome and multiple smaller domes that form a stunning skyline. The interior is decorated with beautiful frescoes and intricate wood carvings, reflecting the rich artistic tradition of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The church also houses the holy relics of Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, adding to its historical and spiritual significance.

This is my second trip to Sofia, love it because of the walkable surrounding and well-connected public transportation, that includes the metro 4 that linked the city area and the International Airport. The city has been described as the "triangle of religious tolerance". This is because three temples of three major world religions—Christianity, Islam and Judaism—are situated close together: Sveta Nedelya Church, Banya Bashi Mosque and Sofia Synagogue. This triangle was recently expanded to a "square" and includes the Catholic Cathedral of St Joseph. For Archaeology lovers, Sofia is definitely a must visit city, they do their best efforts to preserve the site and make it like an open-air-museum. #bucketlistreboot Cathedral Church “Sveta Nedelya” is another place to add to your bucket list when in Sofia. Sveta Nedelya is a medieval church that has suffered destruction through the ages and has been reconstructed many times. It is a cathedral of the Sofia bishopric of the Bulgarian Patriarchate and during our visit we saw the Archbishop. Similarly to other churches, this one is just as impressive and hosts a series of exclusive icons and paintwork. Whilst sightseeing, you are likely to pass by the Saint Sofia Statue. It was a trip to Sofia, Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Sofia is a city full of charm, history, and stunning photo opportunities 📸 We visited the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral early in the morning ⛅️ and it was absolutely breathtaking. The architecture is a masterpiece, and we highly recommend capturing wide shots to get the full grandeur. Stepping into that heavy wooden door, it seems to have traveled through the tunnel of time and space, and instantly away from the hustle and bustle of the world.🚪 The interior space is spacious and bright. Under the towering dome, rows of exquisite wooden seats are neatly arranged, waiting for the arrival of believers. The sun shines through the colorful windows, casting mottled shadows, and each piece of glass is like a scroll telling the story of the Bible, making people involuntarily indulge in that tranquility and beauty.🌈 Every Sunday morning, the church echoes with melodious hymns, 🎵the melody is like the sound of nature, washing people's hearts. The pastor stood on the podium, using his deep and magnetic voice to tell the love and salvation of God, leading the believers to baptize and sublimate their souls.📚 Believers are dressed in neat clothes, holding the Bible in their hands, kneeling and praying devoutly, their faces are full of firmness and love for faith. When you go up to the ground from Serdika Station, where the subway lines cross in the middle of Sofia, you will arrive at Sveta Nedelya Square. Although it is called a square, it is small and about the size of Hachiko in Shibuya. What catches your eye is a very European tower. It makes you feel like you are in Europe. Tram lines also cross the square, and you will feel like you are in Europe again. Across the street is the Church of St. Nedelya. The dome is distinctive and the unique scenery is captivating. It was built in the 10th century and is said to have incorporated wooden architecture on a stone foundation. At the entrance, a priest sprinkles holy water on the believers, and a crowd has formed. Since I was there, I asked the priest to sprinkle holy water on me 💧 The inside of the church is suddenly filled with a "kaleidoscope of religious paintings" and colorful religious paintings. I could hear hymns and felt like I was on a trip. I was overwhelmed by the mass, the people praying, and the religious world that doesn't exist in Japan. I wonder what they thought of me, a lone Asian person there...#church
