Shantou Weekend Getaway
Amidst our fast-paced lives, we often seek a sanctuary for our souls. One weekend, my family and I found such a place in a Chaoshan-style courtyard, where we spent an unforgettable time filled with warmth and leisure.
Approaching the courtyard, a typical Chaoshan "downhill tiger" house came into view. This unique architectural style, resembling a crouching tiger, exudes both grandeur and vitality. The grey tiles and white walls, weathered by time, emanated a rustic charm. The upturned eaves seemed to pierce the sky, whispering ancient tales. Stepping into the courtyard, we were bathed in sunlight. The stone-paved ground felt warm underfoot, as if welcoming us with open arms.
Though not large, the courtyard was meticulously maintained by its owner. A variety of flowers bloomed in vibrant succession. Bougainvillea, in shades of pink and white, adorned the branches like stars, their sweet fragrance permeating the air. Delicate roses swayed gently in the breeze, their silky petals each a testament to romance. My family and I lounged in the deck chairs at the center of the courtyard, basking in the sun's warmth and comfort. In that moment, the hustle and bustle of the world seemed distant, and time slowed to a crawl.
After lunch, the adults gathered for a pot of fragrant Chaoshan Kung Fu tea. As hot water was poured over the tea leaves, they swirled and unfurled in the gaiwan, releasing their aroma. The elders sipped tea and shared stories, their laughter echoing through the courtyard. The children played, chasing colorful butterflies and filling the air with their joyful sounds.
To add to the fun, we held a flower appreciation contest. Each person chose their favorite flower and explained their choice. I selected a pot of elegant bougainvillea tucked away in a corner. Though lacking vibrant colors, it possessed a refined grace, emitting a subtle fragrance, much like a noble gentleman. Everyone shared their perspectives, creating a lively atmosphere.
As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of orange and red. The afterglow cast a golden veil over the courtyard. We gathered for a delicious dinner, savoring the warmth of family togetherness. In this small haven, we admired flowers, basked in the sun, and appreciated the charm of the old architecture. Family bonds deepened through conversation, and the beauty of life unfolded before us.
That weekend, the Chaoshan courtyard offered us an unforgettable experience of leisure in its unique way. It not only provided a peaceful respite from our busy lives but also reminded us of the preciousness of family. As we left, I couldn't help but look back, anticipating our next reunion.
