Years ago, as a young traveler exploring Eastern Europe, my first stop was Bulgaria. One of the itineraries I planned was a solo hike from the Rila Monastery, passing through the 2500-meter-high Rila Mountains, staying overnight at a mountain lodge, and ending the journey at the Seven Rila Lakes. I initially thought the 5-hour journey would allow me to reach the lodge before the 8 PM sunset. However, I got lost in the forest midway, and the steep ascent took a toll on my stamina. By 4 PM, I hadn't even completed half of the planned route. Despite occasional misdirections and some ankle pain, and with parts of the trail becoming muddy after the rain, I was fortunate to meet a few Israeli hikers along the way. We traveled together and reached the popular tourist spot, the Seven Lakes, around noon. Seeing the tourist-friendly paths and facilities, this journey through the Rila Mountains came to an end.

Rila Monastery is located near Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is recognized for its cultural value and is listed by UNESCO. The murals and ceiling paintings are frescoes and the colors are so diverse that it gives off a different feeling from Western Europe. Also, the mountains in the back and the quiet village on the other side! I didn't stay overnight, but I heard that you can stay overnight in the monastery. Getting there by car - Drive for 2 hours from Sofia but best is to join guided tour because there’s lot of things you can learn about the monastery and history of Bulgaria. The monastery is named after its founder, Saint John of Rila who live in a cave nearby the monastery. The monastery was build by one of his students and its used as an education complex. There is also paid museum that help you to learn more history of Bulgaria The view and surrounding around the monastery is amazing. If you feel hungry there is a bakery that sell traditional Bulgarian bread and also few restaurants. There’s also souvenirs shop that sell rose soap and miniature rose perfume. Tips: Avoid visiting on Christmas or New Year eve as some place will close early or totally close.
