Qiunatong Catholic Church is located in Qiunatong Village, Bingzhongluo Town, in the most prominent position in the village. You can see it as soon as you enter the village via the mountain road. This church is a local landmark. From the outside, it looks more like a temple, with a brown and yellow exterior and gray tiles. A four-cornered pavilion is built on the double-eave roof, and a cross stands on the ridge. The cross can be seen from most angles in the village. Qiunatong Catholic Church has a long history. In 1841, a French missionary built a church here after crossing the Biluo Snow Mountain, but it was burned down a year later due to the "Bengka Incident." In 1888, Father Ren Anshou came to the Nujiang Grand Canyon. After the Baihanluo Incident in 1905, Father Ren Anshou used the compensation from the Qing government to build a new church in Qiunatong Village, which was completed in 1908. "Qiunatong" is a Nu ethnic word meaning "black water dam." Qiunatong is located in a valley. The nearby stream appears dark due to the light and shadow effects, and the terrain is relatively open, hence the name. The village is mainly composed of Nu-style wooden houses built along the mountain, with wooden carvings on the eaves. On sunny days, villagers graze sheep on the hillside and grow corn and wheat in the fields next to their houses. The northern end of the Nujiang Grand Canyon is the border of Tibet. Today, the village's tourism industry is booming. There is a guesthouse called Abai, which serves delicious food. If you are driving, you can contact the owner in advance. Continue along National Highway G219 for 5 km from Bingzhongluo, where the steep mountains on both sides of the Nujiang River are called Shimen Pass. 9 km further on, you will reach the Bingzhongluo Border Checkpoint. After checking your ID card, self-driving tourists can pass through. After a dozen kilometers, you will reach the Yunnan-Tibet border. The scenery along the way is beautiful, and you can occasionally see waterfalls hanging on the cliffs, thin and high. The rocks on both sides of the provincial border are engraved with the words "Yunnan" and "Tibet." The G219 National Highway on the Yunnan side is beautiful and well-paved, known as the Beautiful Highway. On the Tibet side, the scenery is also beautiful, but the road is unpaved, known as the famous Bingzhongluo-Chayu-Chayu Road of the Brave. If you don't pass the checkpoint, turn right onto the mountain road and drive about 2 km to Qiunatong, a small village inhabited by the Nu, Lisu, Dulong, Tibetan, and other ethnic groups. The houses look primitive, with earth and wood or all-wood structures, and the roofs are covered with irregular stone slabs. The most prominent building is the Catholic church in the village, a purely Chinese-style building under the cross. There are many Catholic churches in Bingzhongluo Town, showing that faith in God has long been rooted in the hearts of the local people. Qiunatong is the northernmost village in Nujiang Prefecture and one of the last areas to be lifted out of poverty. However, the villagers seem to have no shortage of the pursuit of happiness. A farmer held a 100-day banquet for a newborn, inviting dozens of people to attend. The hall was full, and the laughter and joy could be heard from afar.
