Yunnan Offbeat | First Encounter and Delightful Guide to Nuogan Ancient Village after Rain
In the Jingmai Mountain of Lancang
There is an ancient village called Nuogan
The village is simple and quiet
Each household makes a living by tea planting
The whole village is not big
Now there are less than 300 households left
It's one of the well-preserved original ancient villages in China without commercialization, which is really rare
The Jingmai Mountain where the village is located is also applying for intangible cultural heritage
Liu Haoran's movie 'One Point Straight Home' was also filmed here. This village is really my favorite among all the ancient villages I have visited. I want to stay here for a month doing nothing
I went there in mid-February
The whole Jingmai Mountain was already full of flowers. Actually, it's most beautiful to go there in March and April
At this time, you can also experience tea picking
Finally, some practical information: How to get there: You can choose to drive or take a bus. The overall road condition of Jingmai Mountain is asphalt road, but there are many winding mountain roads and bends. Be careful of oncoming vehicles when turning.
How to shoot: The day I went happened to be a rainy day, so the photos taken have a very special feel. The rain turned the eaves into a deep blue color. The main shooting location is on the main road when you enter Nuogan Ancient Village. You can also go to the roof of a local Dai family's house to shoot, which is also very photogenic.
When shooting, be sure to pay attention to exposure, do not overexpose
◆How to edit photos: You can edit towards dark and blue tones, with the highlights leaning towards blue and the shadows leaning towards blue-green
◆How to play:
It is recommended to control the duration of the visit to two days and one night
On the first day, you can stay in the neighboring Wengji Ancient Village, and play in each village for an afternoon
In Wengji Ancient Village, you can see the sea of clouds in the parking lot, and both the village gate and the village center are suitable for check-in. Remember to try the local corn wine and lemongrass grilled fish~

World Heritage Site, Jingmai Mountain Guide.
Jingmai Mountain was just listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2023. It is still in a relatively primitive state: transportation is inconvenient, and no tickets are required 🎫
👉Transportation
Public transportation is inconvenient, so self-driving or carpooling is recommended.
The road from Xishuangbanna to Jingmai Mountain is mostly mountain roads, which will test your driving skills. There is also a section of gravel road that is hard on tires.
We rented a car, and the driver drove very fast. If you are confident in your driving skills, you can also drive yourself.
👉Number of Days
You can take a 1-day tour or a 3-4 day tour, depending on your schedule.
We did a day trip, which was tiring, but we saw all the main attractions.
👉Attractions
✅Jingmai Mountain Exhibition Center: Learn about the process of applying for World Heritage status, the tea culture of Jingmai Mountain, the history of Pu'er tea, etc.
✅Dapingzhang Ancient Tea Garden (core ancient tea garden of the World Heritage Site): Learn about the growth environment of ancient tea trees and the ruins of the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
✅Nuogan Ancient Village: Learn about the history of the Dai people growing tea on Jingmai Mountain. Nuogan is also the most photogenic spot on Jingmai Mountain. There are travel photography shops and ethnic clothing rentals in the village.
✅Wengji Ancient Village: A settlement of the Blang people, with 2,500-year-old ancient trees, a rainforest coffee shop opened by a Frenchman, etc. 1 km further up is Wengwa Village, which is more primitive and less commercial.
✅Jingmai Dazhai: Sacred Tree Coffee, Exhibition Center.
✅Bee God Tree + Princess Banyan + Octagonal Pagoda: You will pass by these on the way, and you can stop to take photos 📷

Nuogan Ancient Village | Fall in love at first sight, perhaps this is what a paradise looks like.
In this remote and peaceful southwestern borderland, there is a hidden secret that few people have set foot in - Nuogan Ancient Village. It is like a painting carefully carved by nature, quietly spread out on the banks of the Lancang River.
Nuogan Ancient Village is located in Huimin Town, Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, Pu'er City. It is a natural village mainly inhabited by the Dai people, with a history of over 1,000 years. The ancient village is surrounded by thousands of acres of ancient tea gardens, and the villagers have been making a living by planting tea for generations. The ancient village houses are unique in their wooden stilt-house structure, with houses stacked on top of each other, usually two stories high. The first floor is used for storage, and the second floor is used for living. This is to adapt to the hot and humid climate of the tropical rainforest.
The ancient village is not very big. It takes about 3 hours to walk around slowly and drink tea. It is recommended to walk to a high place and look down at the ancient village from above. It looks like a half-moon embedded in the valley. The village is open all night and has not been commercially developed. There are not many choices for food and accommodation. You can visit other villages nearby after visiting the village.
Tourist activities
Tea culture: Each household in the ancient village has a tea house to receive guests. You can drink tea for free and experience the hospitality of the Dai people.
Sightseeing: The Buddhist temple is located at the highest point of the village, which is the best place to view the ancient village. There is also an observation deck opposite the Buddhist temple, which offers a panoramic view of the ancient village.
Surrounding tours: The Bulang village of Ongki, about four or five kilometers from Nuogan Ancient Village, as well as the villages of Jingmai Dazhai and Mangjing, each have their own characteristics and are worth visiting.
Transportation
Airplane: Fly to Lancang Jingmai Airport, then take the airport bus to Lancang County Passenger Station, and then take a minibus to Nuogan.
Self-driving or car rental: From Pu'er or Jinghong City, navigate to Jingmai Mountain Nuogan Ancient Village to reach the destination, which takes about 3 hours.
Public transportation: From Pu'er or Jinghong, take a bus to Huimin Town, then take a bus up the mountain to Nuogan.
Accommodation and dining
Accommodation: There are few choices of guesthouses in Nuogan Ancient Village. Accommodation can be arranged in nearby Ongki Ancient Village.

Dendrobium is also a symbol of architectural culture.
🔽Dendrobium is also a symbol of architectural culture and a magical plant. The village center is the starting point and center of the construction of the Jingmai Mountain ethnic village, and is considered to be the place where the village god is located and the place where the village god ceremony is held. According to local legends, the village god of Nuogang Old Village was transformed after the death of the first village head who built the village. To this day, when major changes such as the construction of new houses, the birth of infants, or the death of the elderly occur in the village, the current village head still needs to worship the village center and inform the village god. The village center is a reflection of the worship and folk beliefs of the ancestors of the Jingmai Mountain Dai people.
Nuogan Ancient Village is the location of many film and television works, such as "One Point to Home", the recently popular "Bian Shui Past Events", and "Road of Fire" released on National Day.
On the road, we saw a sign standing by the road, and we decisively stopped by the road. In order to better protect the ancient tea trees, the roads on Jingmai Mountain are all paved with these stones.
The special feature of Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Forest is the "forest tea" planting method, which refers to the selective thinning of some trees and shrubs in the forest, the use of tea seed sowing and sexual reproduction, and the formation of local tea tree dominant communities in the shrub layer. After more than a hundred years of cultivation and replacement, a forest tea planting system with good forest ecology and a significant tree, shrub, and grass structure has been formed.

Escape the summer heat in the thousand-year-old ancient village, Chalin Ancient Village
The last sanctuary in the deep mountains of Yunnan, Nuogan Ancient Village on Jingmai Mountain, is a true paradise on earth. The villagers still live in the traditional Dai-style stilted wooden houses. Jingmai Mountain is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site, and it is the largest production area of Pu'er tea. The villagers in the mountains rely on tea planting for their livelihood.
The Bulang and Dai ethnic groups are the main inhabitants of Jingmai Mountain, and Nuogan Ancient Village has preserved the most original ecology of Jingmai Mountain's culture and architectural history.
Traditional Residences
Entering Nuogan Ancient Village, what appears before your eyes is a cluster of black-tiled wooden houses, with the traditional residences of the Dai and Bulang ethnic groups being stilted wooden or bamboo houses. The most distinct feature distinguishing Dai from Bulang residences is that the Dai often have multiple eaves with overlapping tiles, while the Bulang usually have single eaves, with a common decoration of one bud and two leaves at the flying eaves.
The stilted houses have livestock on the first floor and living quarters on the second. A hundred years ago, before the use of tile decorations, the residences in Nuogan also used thatched roofs.
Tea Frying
Tea is the livelihood of every household in Nuogan Ancient Village. The ancient tea culture has continued for a thousand years, and as you stroll through the village, the fragrance of tea is everywhere. In front of the houses, black tea is being sun-dried, and every villager's home has a tea pot, with the tender leaves being stir-fried to release the unique aroma of Jingmai Mountain's Pu'er tea.
Viewing Platform
The village's viewing platform is located at the highest point, where you can overlook the entire village. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the entrance of the village to the viewing platform. Free
Village Tea Tasting
The simple customs are the romance of the ancient village. Even if it's your first visit to Nuogan, every household will invite you in for tea, making you feel as warmly welcomed as if you were returning to your hometown. Be sure to taste a cup of authentic Pu'er tea. Free You can also buy tea at various prices from tens to thousands of yuan
Nuogan Ancient Temple
In the center of the ancient village stands the Nuogan Ancient Temple, a Dai-style Theravada temple built during the Qing Dynasty. It is the venue for various major events in the village.
Traditional Clothing
With a slanted lapel short jacket and a slim tube skirt, there is a tailor shop that makes particularly exquisite Dai ethnic clothing. You can buy, rent, or even get your hair done for your own photoshoot. The cost is around 70 yuan.
Transportation: Take the Jingmai Mountain bus from Huimin Town in Pu'er City, and a half-hour winding mountain road will bring you to the best-preserved ancient village on Jingmai Mountain, Nuogan Ancient Village.

A lesser-known travel destination in Yunnan, a village with a history of over a thousand years
Nuogan Ancient Village, this Dai minority ancient village has a history of over a thousand years, not many people know about it, and even fewer have visited.
-
Just left, and I'm already missing it.
-
I especially like the village in the morning and evening, the air seems to carry the fragrance of tea leaves, with the occasional bark of a dog, it feels like my heart has been cleansed.
-
The environment here is beautiful, with good ecology. Surrounded by mountains, there is an open basin in the middle, the 'Nuogan' in the village name means 'pond' in the ethnic language, and 'gan' means 'deer', so Nuogan means a place where deer come to drink.
-
Ancient tea trees are scattered around Nuogan Ancient Village, and within the village, there are scattered ancient dwellings and temples, preserving a relatively complete Dai culture and the original ancient village appearance.
-
The Dai people here have been living with tea for generations, forming a unique and ancient Dai culture.
-
A village that you don't want to leave once you arrive, existing like a peaceful haven, quiet, comfortable, and cozy.

A millennium-old Dai village unknown to 90% of tourists is actually located here
🍁 Deep in the forests by the Lancang River, there live generations of tea growers. Nuogan ancient village, also known as Shuizhai, is inhabited by the indigenous Dai people. The primitive and simple old village is nestled among thousands of acres of ancient tea gardens. The overall road conditions involve winding mountain roads and numerous curves, requiring experienced drivers to take the wheel, with self-driving or chartered cars being the main options.
🍁 Stepping into Nuogan ancient village, the village is built against the mountain in a scattered and orderly manner, with green-tiled wooden houses, and a strong Dai ethnic style hits you in the face. The village is not large, there are not many tourists, and the commercial atmosphere is not strong. Here, one can truly feel the charm of nature and the human touch. This is the most beautiful village I have seen in Yunnan so far!
🍁 The villagers here are simple and kind, and most families in the village make a living by growing tea. Every household in the ancient village has a tea house where you can drink tea for free, and the villagers also make one feel very comfortable.
🍁 Roasted tea, roasted milk tea, roasted meat... Simple folk customs! Of course! There are also ancient teas that are hundreds and thousands of years old! You deserve to come!

Nuo Gan Ancient Village
Nuo Gan Ancient Village, is one of the nine ancient villages of Jingmai Mountain.
The village is hidden in the deep mountains, surrounded by tea mountains, and is also the main Dai village in the tea mountains.
In Yunnan, there are not many ancient villages that can be seen, only when you run into the mountains can you see them.
The roads in Jingmai Mountain are not very good, all are paved with stones, in Shanghai dialect called 'bounce road', such roads are tens of kilometers.
Fortunately, the environment of Jingmai Mountain is excellent, the air is extremely good, sitting on the mountain Dai home, brewing a pot of Pu'er tea, looking at the mountains, looking at the blue sky and white clouds, dazing, or chatting with Dai girls, are all happy things.
In the morning, we set off from Menghai, turned around in the mountains for a day, and arrived at Lancang Lahu Autonomous County in the evening. The hotel we stayed in tonight actually has a dinner buffet, and it's free surprise oh.

Hidden Peaceful Place | Yunnan Nuogan Ancient Village
| Yunnan Nuogan Ancient Village. If one day, your life is eroded by the hustle and bustle of the city. Would you be willing to seek the strength of the distant mountains? Experience the ecological culture of the ancient village. Take advantage of the fact that Nuogan, this unpopular ancient village, has not yet become popular, and feel its original charm.
Travel Guide
Nuogan Ancient Village Highlights:
1. The ancient village is currently free to visit, but with the successful application of Jingmai Mountain for World Heritage status, it may be turned into a paid scenic spot in the future, so be sure to visit as soon as possible. The current Nuogan and Wengji villages retain a good original ecology, without being overdeveloped, this simple feeling is precious.
2. The original and simple old village is located among the ancient tea gardens, and the village is surrounded by ancient tea gardens. Most families in the village make a living by planting tea. They have been planting tea for generations, simple and kind.
3. The architectural style of the houses is unique, mainly traditional earth-wood structures, with strong local characteristics. Among them, the traditional residences in the heart of the village are well preserved and are a good place for tourists to understand the local Dai culture. Climbing up to the viewing platform halfway up the mountain to overlook the entire village is very beautiful and photogenic. Perhaps only by flying a drone in Wengji can you see a good bird's eye view. In Nuogan, you can have a good view from the viewing platform or the temple in the village.
Traffic conditions:
The whole journey is very good, a short section of the highway was taken at the beginning, and the national highway is also OK after getting off the highway. After entering the gate of Jingmai Mountain, the road is paved with stones. Although it is a bit like a washboard, there are no pits on the road. After a long drive, your hands may feel a bit numb, but everything else is fine.
Accommodation recommendation:
Inside the ancient village, there are not many homestays and inns. Jingmai Dazhai and Wengji Ancient Village have more accommodation options. We chose to stay in Wengji, and the two villages are only a few kilometers apart by car.
Food recommendation:
In Nuogan Ancient Village, there are local restaurants opened by villagers, but we did not dine in the ancient village, so we cannot recommend specific restaurants. However, we drank local roasted milk tea in the ancient village, which is very mellow and rich. You must try it. You can also participate in roasting milk tea yourself, which is a great experience.
Watching the sea of clouds:
On the way up the mountain, you will see a viewing platform. We watched the sunrise over the sea of clouds here. The sunrise was at 8:00 that day, and we set off from the village at seven, and waited for half an hour when we arrived. Judging by the journey, it is almost half an hour ahead of departure from Nuogan. There are other places to watch the sea of clouds (Dajinta), according to the owner of the homestay, Dajinta can only see the sea of clouds, not the sunrise. We are not sure whether we can see it or not, because we did not go to Dajinta.

Promise me, you must visit these two ancient villages in Yunnan!
In a ancient village located in the nest of Jingmai Mountain - Nuogan Ancient Village
It's quite far to drive from Kunming, 8 hours drive
It takes 2 and a half hours from Xishuangbanna and 3 hours from Puer
It's better for those who are familiar with the mountain road conditions or experienced drivers
There are homestays in the village, not big, but quite quiet and comfortable
There's not much to eat, prepare more
20 minutes away from Wengji Ancient Village, it's recommended to stay for one night
The local customs here are simple and they warmly invite us to their homes for tea and photos
There are almost no traces of commercialization, and it's easier to take good photos.

The recently popular Jingmai Mountain is worth a visit
Of course! Jingmai Mountain gave me a big surprise, it should look even better when the flowers are in bloom.
1. Not recommending accommodation? Not recommending drivers?
I stayed for 2 days to watch the sunrise and sea of clouds (need to get up around 7 o'clock), stayed in 2 different homestays, both over 300, the conditions are not good, and the room is a bit damp, so I don't recommend it. If you have to choose between air conditioning and an electric blanket, choose the electric blanket... otherwise, it's still chilly in the quilt.
Once a problem occurs, I can't bear this responsibility. If there are related recommendations in the comment area, please judge for yourself.
I'm not a tour guide, just sharing personal feelings, so don't private message me about whether there are spots available next month...
2. What to wear?
People say you need to wear down jackets at night, the truth is that you won't go out much after sunset, at most you'll watch the stars on the viewing platform of the homestay.
3. What to eat?
You can try stir-fried beef with tea leaves, stir-fried eggs with tea leaves... you can't really taste the tea, you can try some local vegetables that you don't usually eat, there's one called water coriander or water celery, the aroma is quite special.
! Be sure to ask the price before ordering, don't be shy!
4. Transportation
Public transportation is really inconvenient, if it's not for watching the sunrise and sea of clouds, you can finish playing in 2 days and 1 night.
5. Tea leaves
Drinking tea is free~ If you like tea, you can buy some, I prefer white tea, I bought a bud and two leaves of moonlight white, 500g of ripe tea and a cake of ancient tree raw tea for storage. Jingmai Mountain does not have asphalt roads, it is said that they are afraid that the rain will wash the harmful substances of asphalt into the ground, and they also check when entering the mountain, afraid that foreign tea leaves will disrupt the market. The tea trees are planted more sparsely than the common tea trees in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, because they do not use fertilizers, the buds and leaves are not as plump as other places, and the taste is fresh and cold.
6. Taking pictures
Nuo Gan is more photogenic, go in the morning, the cooking smoke rises, there are not many people in the village, very quiet and comfortable. Going up the stairs at the entrance, you can overlook the whole village. Viewing platform
There are many free public viewing platforms on Jingmai Mountain, which is much better than some places where they charge for viewing platforms.

Puer City, Yunnan Province
This is the most beautiful village I have seen in Yunnan so far!
The ancient village is built on the mountain, with a well-arranged layout, and the strong Dai ethnic style of the green tile wooden houses comes oncoming.
The mountains in the distance are continuous, the smoke in the village is dense, and the smoke is curling up, a scene of a paradise.
This is how I describe this ancient village.
Here I had an encounter with the ancient village. This is a Dai ethnic minority village. The inhabitants here are indigenous residents. The architecture and style continue the Dai tradition.
Every household grows tea, the village is surrounded by tea mountains. There are no tourists, no commerce. It is one of my favorite original villages.
Address: Nuogan Ancient Village, Puer City, Yunnan Province. Admission: 0 yuan.
It is recommended to drive by yourself, it takes about 3 hours to depart from Xishuangbanna. You have to go around many mountain roads to get there, and the scenery along the way is also good. There are very few homestays in the village, you can stay in it for one night to experience the life of the ancient village like a paradise.

Nuogan Ancient Village in Yunnan | A Dai ancient village with a history of thousands of years
There is a mysterious ancient village forgotten by the world on the southwestern border - Nuogan Ancient Village (Nuogang Ancient Village). This ancient village is located in Huimin Town, Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, bordering Menghai County, Xishuangbanna to the east and Myanmar to the west. Nuogan Ancient Village, also known as Shuizhai, has a history of more than a thousand years and is a natural village dominated by the Dai nationality.
📍Detailed address: Jingmai Village, Huimin Hani Township, Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, Pu'er, Yunnan
🚗Transportation strategy: It is recommended to drive by yourself or charter a car
🕙Opening hours: Open all day
💰Ticket price: Free
🌈 About the scenery:
❶There is a viewing platform in the village where you can easily see the whole view of Nuogan Ancient Village.
❷The small roads in the ancient village are crisscrossed, you can stroll around, and you may inadvertently find a good photo spot.
❸Not far from the square in the heart of the village, you can easily overlook the entire village from the temple above.
🤡Travel strategy: The ancient village is built on the mountain, with a traditional style, and the layered houses are full of primitive simplicity. The residential features of Nuogan Ancient Village are all wooden structure dry column buildings, generally divided into 2 floors, all composed of living rooms, stairwell platforms and balconies. The first floor is for storage of miscellaneous items, and the second floor is for the owner and the restaurant. Each house has a pair of ox horns on the top as a mark. This design layout should be to adapt to the perennial humid and rainy climate of the tropical rainforest.
🌟Highlights: The people in the village work at sunrise and rest at sunset, and they are hardworking and simple. Although they are also curious about the outside world, they still live leisurely in their own homeland, which can be said to be the last home for the weary souls of mankind.
📌Small Tips:
1. The village is very small, it is recommended to visit for 2-3 hours.
2. Nuogan is divided into old village and new village. The old village is the real ancient village. Pay attention to communicate with the driver clearly when taking a car.
3. It is recommended to visit in the early morning or before dusk. The midday light is too strong, the ultraviolet rays of Jingmai Mountain are very lethal, and it is easy to get sunburned. The light is too strong and hard to take good photos.
4. It is hard to find a small shop in the village, it is recommended to bring enough drinking water.
