Putuo Zongcheng Temple, also known as the "Little Potala Palace," is a Buddhist temple built by order of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty to celebrate his 60th birthday and the 80th birthday of Empress Dowager Chongqing. It is the largest architectural complex among the Eight Outer Temples of Chengde, completed in the 36th year of Qianlong's reign (1771). Covering an area of 220,000 square meters, its main building, the Great Red Platform, is located on the mountain top, with a total height of 43 meters. The central hall, the Hall of Ten Thousand Dharmas Returning to One, is the main hall, with its roof rising above the surrounding buildings, all covered with gilded fish-scale copper tiles. Over 60 (more than 40 remain) flat-roofed white platforms and white pagodas are arranged freely along the mountain slope, with no obvious axis.
