Tai Wai to Sha Tin Scenic Bike Ride
Looking for a nice, easy, scenic bike ride to do in Hong Kong?
Last weekend, I went on a bike ride from Tai Wai MTR Station in the Sha Tin district to Tai Mei Tuk, next to Plover Cove Reservoir.
It is a beautiful bike ride that goes along the bike paths next to Shing Mun River, through Science Park, along Pak Shek Kok Promenade, and past the Tai Po Industrial District.
We decided to go through the Tai Po Waterfront Park and cut through the quiet Industrial District, before rejoining the main route that most cyclists take.
You can see a few pictures of Tai Mei Tuk / Plover Cove Reservoir, and a very interesting and strange ‘luxury’ housing area we went past.
Its such an easy ride to do as it goes along proper bike paths.
We rented bikes from a shop near Tai Wai MTR Station, costing us 80HKD each. The bikes were good bikes, and we had the rental until 7PM that day. It was also convenient that we could drop the bikes off at the second shop (or drop off point) near to Tai Mei Tuk.
The Bike Ride is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED :)

Breath of Fresh Air ☀️🌳⛅️🌅 at Plover Cove Reservoir 🚤⛵️
There’s plenty of fresh air to enjoy at Plover Cove Reservoir, near Tai Mei Tuk, Shuen Wan in the New Territories of Hong Kong.
All you need is a free afternoon or evening, take the 20C minibus or 75K bus from Tai Po MTR Station to the terminus, and then follow the walking/bicycle path toward the Bradbury Jockey Club Youth Hostel. Follow the road up the small hill past the BJCYH, and you’re there - breathe! 😁
The dam wall is approximately 2kms long, the dam itself having a capacity of 230 million cubic metres! In other words, it’s a huge and picturesque lake of freshwater on the upper-side of the wall. On the lower side of the dam, is the sea of Plover Cove. 🌊 It is often enjoyed by wind-surfers 🏄 and boats of all descriptions. 🛶🚤🛥️🚣⛵️ Evening, and sunset, are really picturesque. 🌅
If you don’t wish to walk too much, it’s possible to hire bicycles 🚲🚲 (and even quadracycles) in Tai Mei Tuk, or unlock a loco/scan-QR-type bike from near the bus terminus.
Flying kites is also popular (and successful!) from off the reservoir wall, as there is often a pleasant wind blowing. 🪁
Lung Mei Beach 🏖️, BBQ venues/parks🍖, bicycle hire/paths🚲, plus the Pak Sin Leng Nature Trail ⛰️ are other very worthy attractions nearby. There’s also a host of quaint restaurants in Tai Mei Tuk serving food from the east to the west; no need to go hungry after all the fresh air! 🍔🥗🍕🍜🍦 Oh yes, that’s right, on sunny days, the soft-serve icecream van is often around as well! 😁😋🍦🍦

Great Places to Watch the Sunset in Tai Po District.
The Tai Mei Tuk Dam is actually a bold solution from the 1960s to Hong Kong's water shortage problem, where an entire bay was enclosed with a dam for water collection and storage. However, due to the salinity in the soil, there was an issue with the water tasting too salty, which was later resolved by diverting water from Guangdong and the dam is now a backup reservoir. It's a great destination for holidays in Hong Kong, close to Tai Mei Tuk and the beaches, ideal for barbecues, cycling, water activities, kite flying, and photography. It's also perfect for family fun and friends' gatherings for barbecues. Walking on the dam, one can temporarily wash away the hustle and bustle of daily life and feel a sense of seclusion, especially during weekdays when there are few visitors.

A special kind of hiking photo
On the day of my babe’s 10th months, we went to Shuen Wan Reservior. The water was clear and clean, tho there was a lot of mosquitoes.
We went there a few months later, the water was filled with bubbles, seaweeds. Smelt rotten. Food scraps and rubbish everywhere.
Best to go just before school exam weeks.
Anyway, I managed to take a few very good photos of me and my babe to show a very unique experience.
