[2025 New Taipei City ] Travel Guide for Pingxi International Festival of Lights (Updated May)

Had my very first sky lantern experience in Taipei when I visited the not so commonly known Ping Xi! Usually people would head to JiuFen but we took another route instead. At the area of Ping Xi there were many shops near the railway tracks available for guests to buy their own sky lanterns, after they choose the lucky colours which meant a special meaning. Then, brushes are provided for you to write your wishes. It was definitely a fun experience and I would love to try it again! #tripblazers #taiwan #taipei

#fallingforfall - Autumn 🍂 is one of the best seasons in Taipei Taiwan when it’s super cooling in the day and little cold at night! what’s more, they just reopened their borders as well! Taipei is also known for the sky lanterns 天灯 where one can write their wishes on it and set it off in the sky! Had a wonderful experience at Ping Xi Shi Fen 平溪 十分 though most people would head to JiuFen! The autumn colours are extremely beautiful in Taipei and one should take a road trip up to the rural areas even and explore more from there :) October is a perfect time as it would be the start of autumn so do explore and perhaps have your first sky lantern when you’re in taipei!

This year during the Lantern Festival (2/12), I had the opportunity to participate in the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, which is a very famous traditional event in Taiwan. It is also known as "Sky Lanterns in the North and Beehive Fireworks in the South" and is as famous as the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks in Tainan! The safety measures on site were very reassuring, with the fire truck parked directly next to the platform on standby! ✨The light of dreams shining in the night sky It was my first time to see the Sky Lantern Festival and I was really shocked! Although the weather was not very good this time, with just a drizzle at the beginning and the rain getting heavier as the night went on, and even some sky lanterns were unable to be launched smoothly due to being wet, but when hundreds of sky lanterns slowly floated up to the night sky, the scene was still incredibly beautiful! 🌍 Full of tourists, very lively! There were so many people coming this time, especially foreign tourists, and the scene was packed! The projection screen was almost blocked by the crowd, so we could only listen to the host’s introduction, but the atmosphere was really great. Everyone was waiting excitedly for the sky lanterns to take off, and it felt like all the wishes of the audience flew into the night sky together. 🌧️It's worth experiencing, but remember to be prepared! Although there were a lot of people and the weather was unstable, it was still worth a visit overall! If I have the chance to come again next time, I will definitely reserve a spot early and bring rain gear. Taiwan yearly celebrates it’s Lantern Festival. It’s a Chinese traditional festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during the full moon. This years lantern festival started from Feb5-Feb11. Beautiful sky lanterns are released only on the first and last day of the festival in selected location. But you can enjoy the many different lantern display usually in the cities trendiest districts. Getting There - From Taipei main station, ride a train going to Ruifang and then to Pingxi station. From Ruifang the train departs every 20mins to Pingxi and other stations along it. Attractions - Enjoy the 40 mins train ride with the beautiful countryside scenery. Even without the festival, Shifen and Pinxi are known for sky lanterns. So even if you miss the festival, you may go and experience it yourself anytime.
