A Taste of Penang Heritage at Georgetown

First Trip of the year!
In the spirit of last year’s 11.11 i sorta impulsively booked a solo trip in Penang, Malaysia. As a first solo trip, i chose a destination close to singapore, with a flying time of 1 hr and 15 mins. it is pretty close.
One of my stop is the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, which is a well preserved mansion that houses artifacts, antiques and architecture of the old times. The details ate very intricate, a true craft of an artisan of the past.
I visited early in the morning, just as they open at around 9:30am, and the people haven’t flowed in yet.

Pinang Peranakan Mansion, heritage of the Baba Nyonya
#localescapes
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is the masterpiece of the heritage building featuring the design and facade of the Peranakans, also known as Baba Nyonya or the Straits Chinese who mainly settled in the Straits settlements during the 19th centuries. Built in Year 1893 by Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee, this mansion has all the designs from the West, Chinese and Malay. It showcases all the characteristics of the Peranakans, such as the long table (Tok Panjang), the sky well in the middle for capturing sunlight, the chambers for the young masters and childrens, kitchens and also showcases a huge collections of old wares like the plates and the bowls, as well as jeweleries. This mansion was also used as a film site for drama and series such as Crazy Rich Asians, The Little Nyonya etc. This is indeed the most well preserved Peranakan relic till date.
Peranakan Mansion - A Timeless Experience
My visit to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion was nothing short of a captivating journey into the rich tapestry of Peranakan culture. Nestled in the heart of George Town, Penang, this exquisite mansion beckoned with promises of history, tradition, and a glimpse into a bygone era.
As I entered through the ornate wooden doors, I was immediately transported back in time. The mansion, a masterful fusion of Chinese, Malay, and European architectural styles, stood as a testament to the opulence of the Peranakan elite. Its colorful façade, adorned with intricate tiles and carved wooden panels, hinted at the stories hidden within.
The interiors were a sensory feast. Every room was a symphony of colors, textures, and intricate details. Elaborate porcelain vases, finely carved rosewood furniture, and delicate beaded slippers adorned the space. The air was thick with the fragrance of incense, transporting me to an era when rituals and traditions were paramount.
The heart of the mansion was undoubtedly the grand dining hall. A long, elaborately set table took center stage, surrounded by opulent Peranakan porcelain and silverware. I could almost imagine the Peranakan family gathering here for sumptuous feasts, celebrating their unique blend of Chinese and Malay heritage.
One of the highlights was the extensive collection of antique jewelry and clothing, showcasing the Peranakan's flair for intricate beadwork and embroidery. Each piece told a story of craftsmanship and cultural fusion, revealing the Peranakan's unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions.
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion was not just a feast for the eyes but also a learning experience. Knowledgeable guides shared anecdotes and historical insights, adding depth to the visual spectacle. I discovered how the Peranakan culture was an amalgamation of customs, cuisines, and languages, and how this cultural hybridization shaped the identity of the Straits Chinese community.
My visit to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion was a mesmerizing journey through time, offering a window into the unique world of the Peranakan culture. It was a place where history came alive through artistry and craftsmanship, leaving an indelible impression of the beauty and complexity of this vibrant heritage. It was, without a doubt, an awesome experience that left me with a newfound appreciation for the Peranakan legacy.
Peranakan Mansion
The Peranakan Mansion in Penang used to be a residence of a tin-mining tycoon and was later purchased by the current owner, who also happens to be an art collector, and converted into a museum to display some of his collections and also share Penang’s Peranakan heritage. We took a tour here, which lasted almost two hours, and our guide was very animated, sharing stories of Penang as well as the former and current owner and the history of the building itself. A must-see in Penang!

feeling artistic in a mansion
#artshunting
Entrance fee is affordable at RM20 per adult and totally worth the price. We visited at 10am during a public holiday.
The mansion is so large that it is hardly noticeable from the outside. Everything is well maintained and beautiful. In addition, there are many antiques that are meticulously displayed. Excellent example of a typical rich merchants home - full of antiques & access to so many rooms. There are English speaking guides and also mandarin tour at certain times of the day and they are very informative. I enjoyed the central courtyard and the different tiles throughout the premises, as well as the ancestral hall and the paintings. I really appreciate the effort of the current owner to preserve this historical and cultural heritage, and presented to the public. I’m still in awe of how rich the Peranakan culture is.
I highly recommend it to those traveling to Georgetown. You should never miss this attraction

The Pinang Peranakan Mansion
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, is a museum dedicated to Penang's Peranakan heritage. The museum itself is housed within a distinctive green-hued mansion at Church Street, George Town, which once served as the residence and office of a 19th-century Chinese tycoon, Chung Keng Quee.
Pineng Peranakan Mansion 😍
a prominent community of acculturated Chinese unique to this part of the world, especially in the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca and Singapore) hence its other name, the Straits Chinese. Adopting selected ways of the local Malays and later, the colonial British, the Peranakans had created a unique lifestyle and customs which had not only left behind a rich legacy of antiques but its cultural influences like cuisine and language are still evident in Penang today.
At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the typical home of a rich Baba of a century ago is recreated to offer a glimpse of their opulent lifestyle and of their many customs and traditions. With over 1,000 pieces of antiques and collectibles of the era on display, this Baba-Nyonya museum is also housed in one of Penang’s heritage mansion of eclectic design and architecture. Built at the end of the 19th century by one of local history’s famous personalities, the ‘Hai Kee Chan’ or Sea Remembrance Store had once served as the residence and office of Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee. Though not a Baba himself, his Chinese courtyard house was much like a typical large Baba home of eclectic style, incorporating Chinese carved-wood panels and English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks. Having survived the many decades of neglect and decay, the mansion has now been restored to its former glory of a stately home.

Stunning old house in Georgetown
The Peranakan Mansion on Church Street, Georgetown, Penang in Malaysia is a monument to the ambition of a single man, the Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee.
Born in China, the young Chung emigrated to Penang and eventually climbed up the ranks of the Hai San secret society that controlled mining manpower in the royal state of Perak. At the pinnacle of his power, having been appointed the superintendent of all Chinese in Penang (Kapitan Cina), Chung purchased property along Church Street and built a large two-storey townhouse and family temple.
He called his residence the "Hai Kee Chan", or Sea Remembrance Store, and designed it in the Straits Eclectic style preferred by Peranakan of his time
Penang Peranakan Mansion - Malaysia

Among them are furniture, clothes, jewelry, photographs, etc. The furnishings and decoration of the house are very rich, because the owners of the house belonged to the upper class of society.

Peranakan Museum
Ever wonder where peranakan originate from? I also have no idea, only know that peranakan is one of the race in Singapore and Malaysia.
Finding out more about how rich Peranakan people live here in Pinang Peranakan Mansion. The design is so old school elegant. A culture trip to tourist spot like this, discovering unique old school peranakan design which richly decorated, including all the interiors.
Designer inspiration? but definitely not too much like this! This mansion is quite huge, 2 floors to explore.

This place is the most outstanding private museum that showcase the glory of the peranakan history. Such a beautifully restored place, filled with so many treasures - including a pair of earrings with well disguised compass & some bats. Everything is well cared and memorable.
The environment - clean to walk around bare footly.

Penang must punch card | This museum can also take a long photo of knowledge and super beauty
The biggest feeling of coming to Penang is full of Chinese elements, the impact of large-scale immigration in the late Qing Dynasty and the influence of British colonization, the overseas Chinese here Culture fully reflects this history, full of Chinese and Western mix and match, unique charm, is a must-see beauty and story in Malaysia.
For the most intuitive understanding of the life of the Peranakan, the Museum of Overseas Chinese is the best choice. It was originally the residence of the local rich second generation Nyonya, which is now open all year round and has Chinese commentators. . From clothing, customs and collections to well-preserved and quite rich, just go for an hour with a quick explanation.
It is worth mentioning that in addition to a small number of furniture can not be touched in the museum, all areas can be free to take pictures!
The clothing is recommended to be more elegant, with a long skirt and a Chinese style.
Business hours: 9
If you want to know the Nyonya culture, one-stop punching is enough here!
In Penang, Malaysia, there is such a museum that shows Malaysia's special Nyonya culture, reflecting an era of the past. This is the Penang Peranakan Mansion.
Nyonya, is a unique vocabulary in Malaysia. It is a symbol. It is a descendant of a Chinese married to a local in Malaysia. The girl is called Nyonya and the boy is shouting.
This Nyonya Museum is actually the home of the late Chinese Zheng Jinggui. It is a courtyard house with a mix of Chinese architecture and European courtyard style.
Play Raiders: The whole museum is actually a mansion of the year, and it has been completely preserved. The rich life of the Nyonya people in the colonial era is also fully presented to us. Not only is the architectural style intact, but the interior decoration ornaments and the costumes of the Nyonya are displayed for us to visit. It is an invaluable treasure house.
Entering the museum, the first thing that catches the eye is a patio-style grand living room. On both sides of the living room, there are two restaurants in both Chinese and Western styles. It is said that when Zheng Jinggui was at the banquet, he would specially arrange foreign countries. Guests can dine at the Chinese restaurant, and Chinese guests dine at the Western Restaurant to promote a blend of cultural understanding.
came to the second floor, which is the room of the family's Nyonya and ours. Every piece of equipment displayed here is a precious cultural relic of the year, vividly reviving the rich and happy life of Nyonya and our people.
From the second floor down through the eclipse, you will come to the back garden of this mansion. The ground floor is made of imported porcelain tiles from the UK. The Chinese courtyard style is decorated with European-style carved glass windows and fountain pools. Presenting a unique combination of Chinese and Western beauty.
Going further, it is a museum that displays the ornaments and decorative ornaments worn by the Nyonya. The gold jade, the beautifully carved, the large number and the exquisite design are enough to make us stunned and sigh the rich life of the giants. .

Penang | A Nanyang Old Dream
In Penang, Malaysia, the most impressive destination is the 【Khoo Kongsi Museum】 located in a fruit-green independent residence on Church Street, which was also the residence and business place of Zheng Jinggui at the end of the 19th century.
The interior has both traditional Chinese style and various decorations influenced by Western culture; today, the museum houses thousands of antiques and collectibles, such as Chinese ornate gold lacquer screens, exquisite Chinese dresses, embroidered shoes hand-stitched by boudoir women, phoenix coronets and robes, and bedsheets; as well as many Western crafts. These items, transcending time, allow one to glimpse the past prosperity of this place. Many movies and TV dramas have also been filmed here.
In comparison, Cheong Fatt Tze's 【Blue Mansion】 seems a bit dull. In contrast to the museum's overwhelming array of exhibits, this place seems too empty and lacks highlights. However, since you've come to Penang, it's still worth a visit to feel the atmosphere.

Experience the Peranakan culture at the Overseas Chinese Museum
Summer 2023, at the Penang Overseas Chinese Museum, here's a guide to experiencing the Peranakan culture.
Address: Old Town of George Town, Penang.
The costume rental shop is right across from the Overseas Chinese Museum, with a wide selection of outfits to choose from. If you have short hair and can't do your hair, they even provide a small flower decoration for free. The service is excellent. Alipay is accepted.
Experience:
The moment you step into the Overseas Chinese Peranakan Museum, it's as if you've boarded a time machine, traveling back to the Republic of China era, and reliving an old dream of the South Seas. Dressed in the Peranakan attire of that time, you can better imagine the stories of that era. Zheng He's voyages to the West, some of his entourage stayed in Malaya, intermarried with the locals, and their daughters became the Peranakan. The exchange and collision of different cultures make this museum feel somewhat familiar, yet with a distinct flavor. The courtyard is not large, but exquisite furniture and carved crafts can be seen everywhere. In the modest town of Penang, it appears very luxurious, showing that Chinese civilization is still so dazzling and beautiful after many years.
Appreciate Peranakan culture at the Penang Overseas Chinese Museum
The Penang Peranakan Museum in Malaysia, also known as the Overseas Chinese Museum, is a century-old house built in 1894. It integrates the most distinctive "Peranakan culture" of Nanyang. Peranakan refers to the descendants of Chinese in Malaysia and Malacca. "Peranakan culture" is a typical combination of Chinese and foreign cultures. It shows the old life of Chinese overseas Chinese in Penang.
Highlights:
1. The unique history and tradition of Penang's Peranakan culture, including the diet, marriage customs, social and family life of Peranakan people.
2. As an old house museum, the interior furnishings are greatly preserved. The exterior of the house is plain and unremarkable. When you walk in, you will find it suddenly enlightened. Everywhere is a treasure, and every step is a surprise. The shutter in your hand can't stop, and the rare treasures are too many to catch.
3. The integration of Chinese and Western is perfectly embodied. The hollow carved screen, English colored floor tiles, Chinese redwood furniture, Western shutters, Nanyang-style retro flower tiles, staircase iron flowers, etc. are matched together without any conflict, but full of atmosphere.
I really like the unique and rich Nanyang nostalgic charm here. At the same time, the Peranakan Museum has been the location of many film and television dramas, including Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" and Singapore's TV drama "Little Nyonya". The deep and profound Chinese culture, the romantic atmosphere of Europe, and the passionate Southeast Asia converge here, with a movie atmosphere, holding the old dreams of Nanyang, touching the thousands of styles, lazy and exquisite.
Ticket: 20 MYR for adults, about 31 RMB, very cost-effective, including Chinese and English explanations.
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 9:30-17:00.
Nearby attractions: The old town of George Town where the Peranakan Museum is located has many ancient sites and graffiti murals all over the street. Within 1 kilometer, there are Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Upside Down Museum, Love Lane, street murals and the Penang Clan Jetties included in the World Cultural Heritage Protection Category, suitable for arranging half a day to 1 day to stroll around.

#2024wish
My 2024 travel wish is to travel to Kuala Lumpur. I would like to try out their food there. I would like to visit the ICC pudu and the night market at the bukit Bintang area. I would like to visit their pavilion and their mid valley shopping mall there too.
If you are interested in the peranakan culture and their dressing traditions, then you should visit the peranakan centre to understand more about it. You can read up more information from the board there to better understand the meaning behind the kind of dressing they are in.
