The bright colours, exquisite handicrafts and lively displays exude a strong Peranakan feel. It was as if I had traveled through time to the world of the Peranakans, to a place full of history and culture. At the Peranakan Museum, I saw many exhibits showing the life and traditions of the Peranakans. From household items to clothing decorations, each exhibit reflects the unique culture of the Peranakan Chinese. I admired each display one by one, feeling the multicultural charm of the native Chinese. In addition to exhibits, the Peranakan Museum also hosts a series of cultural activities and workshops. I had the opportunity to participate in a traditional handicraft experience and learn the traditional craft skills of the Peranakan Chinese. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage and creativity of the Peranakan people. The whole trip left me fascinated by the Peranakan Museum. Now the musuem features 9 different galleries, where it took almost 4 long years for the complete make over where it now features many new exhibits where some of the items are also on loan so as to be able to spread knowledge on the pernanakan culture not only in singapore but also around the world as well.

Let me share two bridal headpieces I saw at the Peranakan Museum. I was immediately attracted to them. The first one is from Penang in the late 19th or early 20th century, and there is very little official information about it. You can vaguely see the words "Feng Gao" (奉诰), "Ri Yue" (日月), and "Tian" (天) on the top of the headpiece. It looks like a phoenix coronet for a high-ranking court lady. The overall integrity and exquisiteness are quite high. The decorations include the Eight Immortals and the Three Stars of Happiness, Prosperity, and Longevity, which can ward off evil spirits and protect the wearer. 📷📷📷📷 The second one is made in Singapore and has a total of 174 hairpins, which are golden and shiny. The designs are mostly flowers, insects, and birds, but they look very labor-intensive. In the past, I always believed that less is more, but now I really think that the words "exquisite and complex" are very profound. If the complexity is not exquisite, it must be an aesthetic and craftsmanship problem, not a problem with complexity itself 😂

#singaporetrip Super cool location. Amazing wall art and beautifully design buildings. Lots of benches to sit and pass time. A good place to spot small birds circling around flowers for nectar. Really chill place to hangout and take a lot of photos. Best of all, not many people around so is feels quiet during the day. Nice place near SMU and Fort Canning. And they close the street to block the car entering for this first botanic garden project.

The displays are well laid out and if you go in the afternoon you can take a docent tour to view the exhibits. You should plan on spending about 2 hours to see it all. And don't forget to visit one of the nice cafes and restaurants along Armenian street while you are here

Of course, this being the Peranakan Museum, Peranakan embroidery is definitely one of the highlights and there are various pieces on display, including some that are over a century-old! Even if you don't know how to sew or thread a needle, you will surely be amazed by the intricate works here. Jackie Sam, master embroiderer, was also on hand to share her insights on embroidery and how the craft has evolved over time in Singapore.
