Punakaiki is a small community on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, on the edge of Paparoa National Park. The Pancake Rocks are located to the south of the village and are a popular area for tourists. Melaleuca is a heavily eroded limestone area where seawater erupts through numerous vertical blowholes at high tide. The tide and rock together form the main tourist feature of the area. Today, the Melaleuca Stone Rock Scenic Area has built a large number of walking trails for tourists to visit at close range, some of which can be used by wheelchairs, and some are built as stairs to reach the rocks below.
