When on a roadtrip around Tokyo, we had the opportunity to stop by Oshino-Hakkai, and even though it’s the start of winter and the weather was getting more gloomy, it was still very tranquil and lovely.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Oshino-Hakkai is a beautiful village with many clear fish ponds with water from Mount Fuji’s melting snow.
Well worth a visit as it’s really peaceful and quaint.
My rating: 4 ⭐️ out of 5!

Oshino Hakkai
Visit Oshino Hakkai Village, a village with clear water on Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture, not far from Lake Kawaguchiko, a popular tourist attraction. In addition to the village's clear water, we can also see a view of Fuji from this clear water village. With this beautiful view and this ancient village, it is not surprising that many people visit throughout the year.

This is Oshino Hakkai is a touristy set of eight ponds in Oshino, a small village in the Fuji Five Lake region, located between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako on the site of a former sixth lake that dried out several hundred years ago. It is assessable by buses and is a popular tourist spot where you can see clear pond with koi fish. It is beautiful. If yiu are lucky enough, you can also see Mt Fuji which enhances the aesthetics of the village. It is worth a trip there’s But be sure to go early as it tends to get crowded
It’s a lovely little village of very special deep ponds of snowmelt. The water was tranquil with beautiful fish swimming in it. We went there on a clear sunny day and we had the great view of Mt Fuji too. It’s a very popular tourist spot with plenty of local souvenirs and snacks, including roadside grilled fish. Parking area is a short level walk outside of the village centre. Outdoor areas are dog friendly. There’re some vendors selling freshly dried strawberries and peaches are also lovely.
As all the ponds are outdoors, so check the weather before paying a visit. My partner and I really enjoyed our time there. Highly recommended.

Yamanashi Attractions | The Mysterious Springs at the Foot of Mount Fuji - Oshino Hakkai - A Panoramic View of Mount Fuji.
Located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, this area was once a lake. After several eruptions of Mount Fuji and over a long period, the lake eventually dried up. The meltwater from Mount Fuji then seeped underground and emerged in several places, forming a number of spring ponds. The most representative eight are Deguchi Pond, Okama Pond, Sokonashi Pond, Choshi Pond, Waku Pond, Nigori Pond, Kagami Pond, and Shobu Pond. These are designated as Natural Monuments of Japan, selected as one of the 100 Famous Waters, and included in the New Fuji 100 Views.
Transportation Guide: The most convenient way is to take the Fujikyu Railway Line and get off at 'Fujisan Station,' then transfer to the Fujikyu Route Bus. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Oshino Hakkai. Although Oshino Hakkai is located in Yamanashi Prefecture, it is actually quite far from the prefectural capital, Kofu City, and there are currently no direct trains or buses.
There are many tourists in every season, so it is recommended to start early in the morning to get photos without crowds. Among the eight ponds, only 'Sokonashi Pond' requires a ticket, while the others are free to visit. Among these eight ponds, 'Waku Pond' has the most abundant spring water and is the busiest central area, surrounded by many souvenir shops. Opposite it is a watermill, and the daily spring water volume is about 8.4 million liters. The water is extremely clear, and you can easily see the koi swimming in the crystal blue water. Each of the eight ponds has a different story. In the medieval period, this place was a spiritual training ground for Fuji ascetics, and the eight ponds are based on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, dedicated to the Eight Dragon Kings, which is quite unique.
It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to tour the entire Oshino Hakkai. When there are fewer tourists, it is very comfortable to walk around, and the scenery is beautiful like a paradise. There are small vendors selling local delicacies such as mugwort mochi, miso dango skewers, and charcoal-grilled rice crackers. Oshino Hakkai is generally arranged together with Lake Kawaguchi or Gotemba. If you are driving, the time is more controllable, but if you are taking the bus, be sure to check the return schedule in advance.

Oshino Hakkai in Japan features traditional thatched cottages, slowly turning water wheels, and stunning views of Mount Fuji
There are eight beautiful ponds surrounding Oshino Hakkai, each telling its own wonderful story.
"Hakkai" refers to the eight ponds of Oshino Hakkai, a major attraction in the area. Take advantage of the bridges and walking trails to admire the tranquil pond. With traditional thatched huts, slowly turning waterwheels, and stunning views of Mount Fuji, it feels like you've entered another era.
💞Recommended reasons:
This small village offers stunning views all year round, making it an excellent holiday destination. In autumn, the maple trees planted interspersed with evergreens will turn a beautiful tawny color, while in winter, they are covered with layers of snow, adding a mysterious atmosphere to this peaceful village. This is a popular vacation spot and is often visited by many tourists, but even so, the area remains very quiet.
📍Address: Transportation route:
Take the train and then transfer to the bus to Oshino Hakkai.
The nearest station is Fujisan Station on the Fujikyu Line. It takes about 20 minutes by bus and gets off at Oshino Hakkaiguchi bus stop, then it is about a 5-minute walk to the main entrance.
If you drive there, get off the highway at the Yamanakako Overpass and drive for about 10 minutes to get there.
🏖️Environment/Facilities:
Almost the entire village is filled with gift shops selling all kinds of gifts, souvenirs and snacks. Most products are decorated with images of Mount Fuji, and trinkets commemorating the eight ponds are also available.
There is a small cafe and ice cream stand in the village. In addition, you can taste local specialties such as tofu topped with pickled miso and herb mochi, a green mochi made with mugwort, an herb that grows in the area. The straw cake is stuffed with red bean paste and is a delicious dessert based on red bean mochi, which is common in Japan.

Oshino Hakkai
Oshino Hakkai (忍野八海) is a touristy set of eight ponds in Oshino, a small village. The eight ponds are fed by snow melt from the slopes of nearby Mount Fuji that filters down the mountain through porous layers of lava for over 80 years, resulting in very clear spring water that is revered by the locals. Visitors can buy fruits, small snack or souvenir shop here.

Visiting Oshino Hakkai in Japan was a breathtaking experience. Nestled at the foot of Mount Fuji, this charming village captivated me with its serene atmosphere and crystal-clear ponds. The eight sacred ponds, fed by Mount Fuji's melted snow, were incredibly pristine and reflected the surrounding nature beautifully. Walking around the village, I admired the traditional thatched-roof houses and lush gardens. The local vendors offered delicious snacks and unique souvenirs, adding to the charm of the visit. The serene environment provided a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Oshino Hakkai is a must-visit for anyone seeking tranquility and a deep connection with nature.

Even if it means waiting in a long line, it's worth trying the famous water of Oshino Hakkai in Japan - it's free!
Oshino Hakkai is actually a collection of eight small ponds at the foot of Mount Fuji. It is said that the water comes from the melting snow on the summit of Mount Fuji, which is filtered through volcanic rock layers and accumulates in the mountains, resulting in a clear and sweet taste. Although the ponds are 5 to 6 meters deep, they appear to be within reach due to the clarity of the water. The Japanese like to use 'Fuji water essence' to soak and consume food, which is inspired by the water quality concept of these eight seas.
📍Location: Oshino Village, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan
🚗Transportation: If you're not driving, you can take the Fujikyu Line to Fujisan Station, then transfer to a shuttle bus to Oshino Hakkai Station and walk for a few minutes to get there.
👍️Must-visit spot: Oshino Village is also a spot for viewing Mount Fuji from a distance, although the mountain is often 'secluded' due to the weather. Oshino Hakkai is also known as the 'Jiuzhaigou of Japan'. Therefore, strolling between the eight ponds and experiencing the beauty of 'fish swimming in the sky' is endlessly enjoyable.
🎟️Ticket information: Free.
💗Other tips: The water is really sweet and free, so consider bringing a bottle to take some back to your hotel to drink throughout the day. Additionally, tofu made with spring water and served with Japanese sauce is also worth a try.
