Kaiseki Business Lunch at Shinjuku Yuen Onsen Hotel, Tokyo, Japan: Summer down and winter up
After visiting the #NationalArtCity, Tokyo at noon, I ran to #由缘新宿, which is located in the corner of Shinjuku, to have Chinese food. The name of the restaurant is very unique #夏下冬上, and it is located on the first floor of #由缘温泉旅館. It is hard to imagine that there is such a traditional Japanese hot spring hotel in Tokyo, and it is in the bustling Shinjuku district!
Passing through the Japanese curtains and corridors, you can see the restaurant entrance. Like the Youyuan Hotel, it is small but very unique and tasteful. It was almost 1 o'clock when we visited, and the restaurant closed at 2 o'clock, so there were few people.
After looking at the menu, I found that there are two special set menus for the 5th anniversary of the opening at noon: Yuen Gozen ¥3,500 and Xiaxia Dongshang Gozen ¥2,800. The difference between the two seems to be the wagyu steak; there is also a ¥2,000 a la carte menu, such as Ebisu Donburi or Sashimi Gozen.
We ordered the summer and winter set meal, and the dishes served were quite rich. First came the cold vegetable salad and iced green juice. The set meal included five kinds of sashimi, five kinds of tempura, two kinds of small bowls, white rice, miso soup and pickled spices.
We went with the Japanese kaiseki cuisine of the hot spring hotel, but because it was a business lunch, the price was relatively reasonable. As for the taste and portion, it is decent but not amazing, and the portion is just enough to fill you up.
The overall environment is very comfortable, like dining in a hot spring hotel in the countryside of Japan. You can eat slowly and feel a quiet little world outside of busy Shinjuku.
