[2024 Shanghai ] Travel Guide for On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt (Updated Nov)
Exhibitions
Address:
上海博物館人民廣場館 一樓展廳
Opening times:
Opens at July 19, 2024-August 17, 2025
Shanghai Museum - Pyramid Summit: Ancient Egyptian Civilization Exhibition - Secrets of Saqqara 3/3.
This exhibition hall also incorporates "youth-friendly" into the design principles, lowers the height of the display cabinets and display belts, designs touchable cultural relics models, dynamically interprets the one-body double-sided cat god, and creates a montage cat god temple, in order to trigger the audience's imagination through the combination of virtual and real scenes. It is believed that through this exhibition, more people will have a strong interest in ancient Egyptian civilization, further promoting the study and inheritance of ancient Egyptian history and culture. At the same time, it is also hoped that such cultural exchange activities can become more and more, so that while we feel the charm of the world's diverse cultures, we can enhance our common understanding and respect for human civilization. A Millennium Glimpse from Ancient Egypt ~ Shanghai Museum
📍Attraction Address: Shanghai Museum
🏝️Reservation Guide: You can make a reservation in advance through the Shanghai Museum's official WeChat account. We didn't get a reservation, so we bought a guided tour ticket on Ctrip. A guide led us in, and since we had children with us, having a guide made it easier to understand the exhibits in depth.
🚗Transportation Guide: You can take the subway to People's Square Station, and it's a 473-meter walk from there.
💗Other Tips: There are many people during holidays, so it's recommended to arrive early to queue for entry. The first floor of the museum has several separate exhibition halls, and on the second floor, there's a café where you can buy water. You have one re-entry opportunity on the same day; you can get an invisible stamp on your arm at the front desk. It's especially worth noting that there's a VR experience exhibition about Ancient Egypt on the second floor. If you buy tickets on-site, you may have to wait until after 4 PM, so it's recommended to buy tickets in advance. The entire experience lasts 45 minutes and is highly recommended.

Explore Ancient Egyptian Artifacts Without Leaving the Country
"At the Pinnacle of the Shanghai Pyramid: The Grand Exhibition of Ancient Egyptian Civilization" is an unmissable cultural feast, currently being held at the Shanghai Museum! 📅 This exhibition runs from July 19, 2024, to August 17, 2025, and is one of the largest exhibitions of ancient Egyptian artifacts ever held in Asia. The exhibition features 788 precious artifacts from seven major museums in Egypt, with over 95% being exhibited in Asia for the first time! 🗿🌍
The exhibition is divided into several captivating thematic areas, including "Secrets of Saqqara" and "The Era of Tutankhamun." In "Secrets of Saqqara," visitors can explore the ancient Saqqara necropolis and its mysterious cat temple, unveiling the veil of sacred animal worship 🐱. "The Era of Tutankhamun" will take you through time and space to experience the glorious yet brief life of the young pharaoh 💀👑.

This year's exhibition is amazing, each one is top-notch
This year there are many great exhibitions, you could say each one is top-notch level 🎊 Previously, I shared the Sanxingdui exhibition in Beijing, and now Shanghai has an Ancient Egyptian Civilization exhibition, which is the highest level Ancient Egyptian artifact exhibition in Asia to date❗
📍Location:
Shanghai Museum People's Square Pavilion, first floor exhibition hall 'Pinnacle of the Pyramid: Ancient Egyptian Civilization Exhibition', second floor 'Glory of Ancient Persia' and 'Vanished Pharaohs' exhibition halls
🏝️Reservation Guide:
You can purchase and reserve tickets for 145 yuan on the official 'Shanghai Museum' website, but the recent slots are all full, so keep checking frequently. From July 19, 2024, to August 31, 2024, there will be night sessions from 17:00 to 21:00, adding 4,000 slots. The summer vacation is very popular, and the entire exhibition will last until August 17, 2025, so there is plenty of time. You can visit again on weekdays when there are fewer people.
🚗Transportation Guide:
Take the subway to People's Square Station, exit at Exit 1. Driving is not recommended as it is difficult to find parking during the summer vacation.
💗Other Tips:
1. The Shanghai Museum has the People's Square Pavilion and the East Pavilion. The People's Square Pavilion is closed on Mondays, and the East Pavilion is closed on Tuesdays. The East Pavilion has regular exhibitions and some good artifacts, so if you want fewer people, it is recommended to visit from Wednesday to Friday after school starts in September.
2. After buying tickets online, remember to reserve an entry time slot and enter with your ID card.
3. You can rent a guide device for 30 yuan at the entrance. It will enhance the immersive experience of the exhibition.
4. The cultural and creative store is highly rated, worth a visit, and has a rich variety of items.
5. Finally, avoid the summer vacation, as the crowd will be unbearable.

It is said to be a must-see exhibition in Shanghai within a year
I booked an early bird ticket to see the exhibition on August 18th. I thought that the combination of the Ghost Festival and the rain would mean fewer people, but it was still crowded and somewhat chaotic, making the overall experience less than ideal. The exhibition will be extended until August 17th next year, so those who are interested can avoid the peak summer weekend crowds.
It is said to be the largest and highest-level ancient Egyptian artifact exhibition ever held globally, with 788 ancient Egyptian artifacts on display.
It is recommended to have some knowledge of ancient Egyptian history before visiting the exhibition, otherwise, the immersive experience may be weakened due to the large number of people.
Three exhibition areas:
The Kingdom of Pharaohs: Generally recommended to see first, it connects the civilization of Upper and Lower Egypt and more than 20 dynasties, unfolding like a scroll before your eyes.
The Secrets of Saqqara and the Era of Tutankhamun are like two topics, focusing on the archaeological area of Saqqara and the story of the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun, respectively.
I prefer The Secrets of Saqqara. The ancient Egyptians' worship of cats and animal deities is quite astonishing. There are cat mummies!
Next is the commentary on the audio guide:
The Shanghai Museum provides AR glasses and headphones for this exhibition. After security check, you can rent AR glasses (50 yuan, surprisingly from Rokid) on the right and headphones (25 yuan) on the left.
🎧 The headphones only provide introductions for some exhibits, and you can find the exhibit locations on the corresponding machines.
👓 The AR glasses introduce even fewer exhibits, and you need to sincerely search for AR recognition points throughout the museum, which then pop up a short PPT-style clip. Due to the crowd, the bone conduction introduction on the glasses is hard to hear.
It feels like those who want to learn more might as well look for podcasts where bloggers explain the exhibits and listen to them while touring the exhibition.
After the exhibition, you can visit the surrounding shops. There are many, and it is said that there are also online purchasing options.
