Stari Most, also known as Mostar Bridge, is a rebuilt 16th-century Ottoman bridge in the city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina that crosses the river Neretva and connects the two parts of the city. On 9 November 1993 Stari Most collapsed due to shelling by the Croatian Defence Council during the Croat–Bosniak War. In 2017, the appeal court deemed that destruction was legal since the bridge was a military target as the opposing Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina used it as a military supply line. Subsequently, a project was set in motion to reconstruct it; the rebuilt bridge opened on 23 July 2004. We were lucky to do a day trip here on a beautiful sunny day from Dubrovnik, Croatia. We had a lovely stroll in the old town, crossing Stari Most, stopped for a delicious local lunch and had enough time to walk down to the river for the spectacular views and photos of the bridge.

The Old Bridge was originally constructed during the Ottoman period.The Old Bridge replaced the wooden suspension bridge that had previously existed on site. Another Surprise sight is a statue of Bruce Lee which I come across while exploring.Also worth exploring is the bazaar on the either side of the street which I can try some local food . This beautiful bridge is the perfect backdrop for photographs whilst visiting the city. Try and grab a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants and cafe’s that line the river so that you can marvel at this view over lunch. It’s devastating to think that the original bridge was destroyed in the Bosnian war back in 1993. But, using the same techniques and materials as those used for the construction of the original bridge, this bridge was rebuilt in 2004 - with the city of Mostar becoming a world heritage site a year later. The bridge stands 24 metres above the water. Whilst there, you can watch people dive in; with some waiting on the bridge to do so once they’ve made enough money. Big tip - don’t try diving in yourself! Just a short walk from Stari Most is the cute miniature version known as the Crooked Bridge. We stopped at the banks of the river for a bite to eat. Food and drink in Bosnia & Herzegovina is so cheap, and it is tasty stuff. A win-win all round. Evidence of the Yugoslavian war is still on show in the city, in a much greater way than you’d find in Croatia or Montenegro. For example, you can see the sniper tower which was seized by the Croat army during the war. Across the way from this building is the Spanish square, which was built by the Bosnian government to honour the Spanish soldiers who died during the war. But then, in this same square, you can see the opulent Old Gymnasium. This was one of the oldest and most famous schools in the former Yugoslavia. This square is a stark reminder of the recent history and battles that this country has suffered. After admiring the awesome statue of Bruce Lee, it was nearly time to move on to our next destination. Kujundžiluk Street Bazaar Crossing Stari Most, you will follow a narrow street, surrounded by little shops on both sides and, in some sections, with views to the left of the Neretva River. I started my morning early in the charming Old Town, where cobbled streets and stone buildings whispered stories from centuries ago. My first stop was the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge). The view of the turquoise Neretva River beneath and the green hills in the background was absolutely breathtaking. I watched a local diver prepare to jump off the bridge — a thrilling tradition here — before visiting the Old Bridge Museum to learn about its incredible history. By midday, I wandered through the Kujundžiluk bazaar, where colorful stalls sold handcrafted souvenirs. I then enjoyed a delicious riverside lunch at Sadrvan, trying local dishes like čevapi and Begova čorba, followed by a traditional Bosnian coffee. In the afternoon, I visited the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, where climbing the minaret rewarded me with panoramic views of the city and bridge. I also spent some time in the War Photo Exhibition, which offered powerful insight into Mostar’s past. If you have a bit more time, I highly recommend a short trip to Blagaj, just outside Mostar.
