The time I arrived was too late, close to the evening, and I couldn't enter Okayama Castle. I originally wanted to go to Okayama Korakuen, which was also closed, so I left some regrets to make up for it later😜 There is a streetcar in Okayama that you can take. Get off at the castle station and walk for ten minutes to Okayama Castle. The appearance of Okayama Castle is really beautiful. The outer walls are black partitions, giving Okayama Castle the character of a "Uro Castle" title.

Many people pass through Okayama, so if you have time next time, take a stroll here and enjoy its unique charm.

Okayama, one of my favourite city in Japan and I always try to reach out while I am in Japan.Okayama is located in west Japan and largest city in its prefecture and home to the imposing, black Okayama Castle and Okayama Korakuen, one of Japan's three greatest landscape gardens.Beautiful landscapes, famous castle and famous for all its fruits . After I left Fukuoka, I took Shinkansen ( Sakura 551- one of JR train ) up to Okayama. Keep my luggage in one of coin locker and get a bus No 18 from just outside of train station . Get down at Korakuen main gate , get a ticket for Okayama Cultural Zone ticket , it cost me 520¥ and start explore Okayama Prefecture museum and continue to Korakuen Garden ( famous for coin fish pond and beautiful landscape) and get out by South Gate and continue to Okayama Castle. Then walk out to nearest 🚋 station and back to Okayama train station, have my lunch , took my luggage from coin locker and continue my journey to Hiroshima. If it really snows heavily, it could be dangerous. Fortunately, there was no heavy snow during the New Year this year. The first stop was Okayama Castle. Okayama Castle is located in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, and is selected as one of the "Japan's Top 100 Castles." It is also known as one of the "Three Great Flatland-Mountain Castles of Japan" along with Tsuyama Castle and Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, making it one of the "Three Great Castles of Okayama Prefecture." Okayama Castle was built in 1597 by the daimyo Ukita Hideie, taking eight years to complete. The most striking feature of Okayama Castle is its black lacquered walls, giving it a glossy appearance like crow feathers, hence the nickname "Crow Castle." The roof of the main keep is decorated with gold leaf tiles, earning it another nickname, "Golden Crow Castle." Okayama Korakuen, along with Kairakuen in Mito and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, is known as one of the "Three Great Gardens of Japan." It was initially constructed in the early 1700s as a leisure garden for the daimyo Ikeda Tsunamasa. During Tsunamasa's rule, it was a garden designed for viewing from the mansion within the garden. The landscape has undergone some changes over the years due to social circumstances and the preferences of the daimyo, with waterways and ponds gradually enhancing the garden's strolling features. The "Enyo-tei" is the most important building in the garden, used as the daimyo's living quarters and built to offer a panoramic view of the garden. The "Ryuten" is a place for the daimyo to wander the garden, entertain guests, and rest. The central waterway passage is an extremely rare garden feature. Guo Moruo, the former president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who studied at Okayama Sixth High School in his youth, donated two red-crowned cranes to the garden in 1956. Next to the crane house is a stone monument with a poem expressing Guo Moruo's sentiments: "Korakuen still exists, but Crow Castle cannot be found. I wish to pair the red-crowned cranes with the plum grove." There are still red-crowned cranes in the garden today.

Okayama Korakuen, located next to Okayama Castle, is one of Japan's three great gardens. Built by the second lord of the Okayama Domain, Ikeda Tsunamasa, this magnificent garden is filled with flowers that bloom throughout the year, making you feel as if you have traveled back to the Edo period. In 1952, Korakuen was designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" and received three stars in the Michelin Green Guide, making it a true gem of Japanese gardens. The garden is a great place to take a stroll and enjoy the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The pond, teahouse, and lawn are all great photo spots. The "Fantasy Garden" event is held in spring, summer, and fall, when the garden is lit up at night, creating a fairy-tale-like atmosphere. (The 2025 spring "Fantasy Garden" event will be held from April 25 to May 6, 18:00–21:30.)

There are both savory and sweet dishes. You can rent a duck boat. There are souvenirs. The view is beautiful. The grilled purple sweet potato dango is very delicious. 🍡 Every year at the end of November, there is an illumination event every year. But the night we went, it was raining. So we missed it. 🥹 We stayed at The OneFive Okayama, which is close to both the tram station and the castle, only 500 meters away. The room is quite small but convenient. We visited Okayama, the hometown of Momotaro, during our transfer from Takamatsu to Himeji Castle. It takes about 30 minutes to walk from JR Okayama Station to Okayama Castle. In early December, the streets of Okayama are lined with ginkgo trees with yellow leaves and maple trees with red leaves. Okayama Castle is a castle with a rich history located in Kita Ward, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The keep of Okayama Castle is covered with black wooden boards, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle" or "Golden Crow Castle." The keep is a five-story, six-level building and is one of Japan's oldest castles. 🏯 From a distance, the keep of Okayama Castle looks like a single building, but on its west side, there is a yagura called Shiozō. A yagura directly attached to the keep without a corridor is called a complex keep. This architectural style gives the keep of Okayama Castle a sense of stability. My trip to Okayama Castle was amazing and so much fun! The castle, known as the “Crow Castle” because of its black exterior, looked both cool and majestic. As I walked up to it, I felt like I was stepping back into the time of samurais and lords. Inside, there were fun hands-on experiences, like trying on a samurai helmet and armor. I felt like a real warrior and, of course, took some awesome photos! The top of the castle had a fantastic view of the city and the nearby Korakuen Garden, which looked so beautiful from above. After exploring, I strolled down to the nearby garden, soaking in the peaceful scenery. My visit to Okayama Castle was the perfect mix of history, fun, and great views. The 'Kuronosuke' cat from the Yumeji Art Museum appears on the city bus! The black cat 'Kuronosuke,' who looks like he jumped out of a Yumeji painting, was appointed as the 'garden cat' of the Yumeji Art Museum on December 24, 2016, and makes whimsical appearances. The encounter with Kuronosuke happened a few days before Yumeji's memorial day on September 1 of that year, when a museum staff member rescued a kitten that was about to be hit by a car. Feeling a mysterious connection, they named him 'Kuronosuke' after Yumeji's eldest son's name, 'Nijinosuke.' Let's ride the Yumeji Kuronosuke bus!

The 'Tsukimi Yagura,' built during the Edo period, is the only remaining turret on the main bailey site of Okayama Castle and is an important cultural property. The Nishite Yagura also survived the war. The observation deck on the seventh floor of the main keep offers a panoramic view of Okayama Prefecture. The Asahi River serves as a natural moat for Okayama Castle.

For our trip to Hakone, we stayed at Okayama and bought the Hakone area pass which was valid for 3 days. This gave us unlimited travels within the designated area which helps to save some cost from accommodations in Hakone itself. However, we had to plan ahead and spare more time for our programme and itinerary in Hakone. We also visited Okayama castle just before returning back to Tokyo on our last day in Hakone-Okayama. From Okayama, we travelled to Hakone via bus, train, and tram etc. We also managed to ride the iconic Hakone ship to take the cable car up to a viewpoint of Mt. Fuji. Hakone is also a very popular spot for viewing of Mt. Fuji, apart from Kawaguchiko. We spent a total of about 2 trips over 1.5 days to cover 80% of Hakone. We took the Romancecar from Shinjuku to Okayama and back using the same route. Overall, our experience in Hakone was a memorable one even though we didn’t manage to see the skywalk and bridge as our travel period fell during the closure period of the sky bridge but we did get to go to Gotemba Premium Outlets where we had a close up view of Mt. I spent some time capturing the beauty of the scenery on my camera, trying to preserve the memory of this magical experience. Upon arriving in Okayama, I was greeted by the vibrant energy of the city. There are plenty of attractions nearby to explore, including the famous Okayama Castle and the enchanting Korakuen Garden, known as one of Japan's three great gardens. #2024wish Okayama looks very impressive from the outside and is great to photograph also from the surrounding area. The interior is very modern and even has an elevator up to the 4th floor. There are a lot of exhibitions in Japanese inside the building and kids will love the hands-on experiences (lifting a sword, entering a palanquin etc.) In 2024, I want to come back here.
