The final stop of the Shikoku Pilgrimage: Okuboji Temple, the 88th sacred site dedicated to the Medicine Buddha
#JanuaryGoodPlaces2025
The last stop of Shikoku Pilgrimage, the 88th sacred site: Iouzan-Henjokoin-Okubo-ji. Located deep in the mountains at the junction of Tokushima and Koyama in Shikoku, this temple is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai. Due to its high terrain, the red leaves and ginkgo trees in the temple change color every November, making it a popular spot for Shikoku people to enjoy autumn leaves.
Since it was early spring when I visited, I didn't have the chance to see the red leaves, but there were a few cherry blossoms in full bloom. Dawa Temple is quite solemn. In addition to the seated statue of Medicine Buddha, the main hall also houses a staff that was brought from India to Japan via the Tang Dynasty, which is quite noble and dignified.
The most convenient way to get to Okuboji Temple is by car. It takes about 40 minutes from Takamatsu Expressway to Shido IC. If you take the bus, you need to first go to JR Shido Station and then transfer to the community bus. The journey takes about 1 hour.

[Kagawa] A villa in Sanuki City right in front of the ocean! Only one group per day allowed!
Kagawa Records 𓂃 ✍︎______________________________________
2 nights at R villa, a beachfront house in Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture.
The first floor has a bedroom (a large bed and two bunk beds) and a toilet, while the second floor has a kitchen, living room, and bathroom.
The furniture and appliances are all the latest, and the kitchenware is well-stocked, so you can enjoy cooking while looking out at the sea.
The windows are large and the sunlight is excellent, so it seems that it takes a while for the air conditioner to work in the summer, but when we arrived, the air conditioner was working well and it was cool.
At night, I was able to relax while watching Netflix and YouTube on the projector with a drink I bought at a nearby supermarket.
I was a little moved when I saw a stingray jumping around many times while looking out at the sea from my room!
There are many beds, so you can have fun with friends, and it is also recommended for couples and families! I also recommend the nearby 📍 sushi restaurant Sanuki Tsuda Isshin 📍 and the cafe Okawa Oasis with a view of the ocean 🌴✨ #Kagawa Prefecture #Kagawa Trip #Kagawa Tourism #Kagawa Gourmet

Temple number 88, Okuboji, surrounded by magnificent nature
📍Okuboji Temple
The 88 sacred sites associated with the Heian period monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai). This is the last sacred site on the pilgrimage to trace the ruins.
There is also a way to go around the temples in reverse order, called "reverse pilgrimage," in which the temples are visited in reverse order, and in that case, this is the first sacred site.
This place, close to the border with Tokushima Prefecture, is located on the middle slope of Yahazuyama, and the air is cooler than on the plains.
In autumn, it is also popular as a spot to see autumn leaves.
The main hall stands with Mt. Taizogatake in the background.
The main deity, Yakushi Nyorai, is enshrined here, and you can receive benefits such as recovery from illness and longevity.
Okuboji Temple is a place where you can calm your mind and worship in the majestic scenery surrounded by mountains.
Among the worshippers, there are some pilgrims wearing their kongo staffs and white robes, which are the tools of the pilgrimage.
One of the features of Okuboji Temple is the Hojodo Hall, where the kongo staff that accompanied the pilgrims on their journey is dedicated.
The kongo staff is an item that symbolizes the "dokou ni tatsumi" (two companions), which means that the pilgrims are with Kobo Daishi during the pilgrimage. At Okuboji Temple, the final sacred site, the kongo staff that has completed its role is deposited.

A mysterious world unfolded deep in the unknown mountains.
📍Kadono-sato Tsubaki no Shiro
Actually, it was built as a playground in 1996, but it doesn't seem to have been used much, with only occasional events being held there, so most people probably don't know about it.
Further beyond the Kadono Dam in Samukawa-cho, Sanuki City, there is a beautiful bridge called Kadono Bridge, right next to Camellia Onsen.
This bridge is also very artistic, but once you cross the bridge, you'll see an even more mysterious building.
Castle of Camellias.
The moment I saw it, I was reminded of the Ghibli film "Castle in the Sky" directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
I wonder if there are camellias planted on the roof (rooftop?) of the building, and this looks like a pretty impressive castle.
The design, which looks like a combination of cubes, and the stairs and entrance to the building make it seem like a castle from another world. I had a fun time just looking around the exterior!

🇯🇵 [Kagawa Prefecture] Nagaoji Temple, 87th temple of the 88 Sacred Places of Shikoku
🇯🇵 [Kagawa Prefecture] Nagao-ji Temple, 87th temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage
After the Meiji Restoration, the main temple was provided for public facilities such as schools, police, and county offices (^^)
Locals call it "Nagao's Kannon" and "The temple where Chikara-mochi and Shizuka Gozen were ordained"!
There is a theory that it was founded by Prince Shotoku, but the more common theory is that it was Bodhisattva Gyoki in the 11th year of Tenpyo! When Gyoki was walking through this area, he felt a spiritual dream of a willow tree on the roadside, and he carved a statue of Bodhisattva Kannon out of that tree and made it the principal image ^ ^!!

[Kagawa Trip] A hidden gem! Recommended spots in Tsuda no Matsubara!
A must-read before your trip to Kagawa Prefecture! We'd like to introduce you to Tsuda no Matsubara, a fashionable spot that has been gaining popularity among locals recently!
🌊 Tsuda no Matsubara
Tsuda no Matsubara is a coastal area in Sanuki City where pine trees are planted along the coast, which was selected as one of the "100 Best Beaches in Japan". In recent years, the number of fashionable shops has increased, and it is attracting attention as the next breakout spot!
The two restaurants and cafes we recommend are as follows!
[1. Porto Pizza]
An authentic pizza restaurant near the sea. There are seats with a view of the sea, and the interior is very atmospheric.
I ordered the fried whitebait pizza from today's recommendation, and it was a very Japanese pizza topped with plenty of whitebait and shiso. Personally, I felt that the whitebait flavor was a little too strong, but I think it was an irresistible taste for fish lovers. The dough itself is chewy and baked to a fragrant finish, so it's recommended for Milano pizza lovers.
There is a wide variety of drinks, and the drinks made with Monin syrup look cute. The elderflower soda was delicious!
【2. NICO by ALIA】
A super cute ice cream stand with a retro atmosphere.
I ordered a single ice cream with marbled ice cream, which looked fancy and very cute!
It was topped with lots of nostalgic sweets such as crispy panda, koala's march, and Kinoko no yama, so it's sure to look great in photos! The colorful homemade cookies were also delicious.
You can enjoy the beautiful scenery unique to Japan, as if you were in a manga! Please come and visit us🫶

It takes 2.5 hours by car from my house to Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture🚗
As the conversation progressed, we decided to go eat Sanuki udon! So we went😅 I only sat in the passenger seat, so it wasn't difficult at all lol
I ate tempura and udon at a restaurant called Tama that I found on MAP✨️
The restaurant had a nostalgic country atmosphere and there were a lot of customers coming and going.
I found out later that it was a popular restaurant that also had a store on an online shopping site!
