2025 Bentota Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in May)

I planned to visit Bentota beach. I was scared a bit but when I arrive there I was amazed to see the beauty of the beach. it's so clean and the sunrise was so beautiful even though I slept all the day just near the seashore enjoyed the sound of waves #happynewyear

For the May Day holiday, I found myself back in Sri Lanka again—seriously hooked. 🤣 Over five nights, I stayed not only at Aman but also at the very niche local brand Uga, plus another Geoffrey Bawa-designed hotel, Cinnamon Bentota, which surprisingly didn't disappoint. After its 2019 renovation, it's got way more "spirit" now. - ⭐ Day 1: Arrived in the morning and headed straight to Bawa's Café. Though there's no AC, the designer cleverly used the interior structure and layout to let breezes flow through. You can enjoy afternoon tea here, as well as lunch and dinner. Later, checked into Cinnamon Bentota. ⭐ Day 2: Traveled from Bentota to Yala—my second visit, but the safari let me down this time. Didn’t see what I hoped for. 😔 ⭐ Day 3: Amanwella left a great impression, though it feels more suited for honeymooners. ⭐ Day 4: Aman Galle was absolutely my favorite. The creaky wooden floors in the corridors give such a vintage charm. At night, strolled around Galle Fort, sipping drinks and enjoying live music. ⭐ Day 5: Returned to Colombo in the afternoon for Chinese food at Dynasty Restaurant (didn’t take pics). Great spot for a taste of home—authentic flavors, run by Chinese owners. ⭐ Day 6: Wrapped up the trip. Sri Lanka offers endless ways to explore—no matter how you plan it, you can’t go wrong.

The lamb bone marrow soup, shrimp and lentil fritters, and banana leaf rice called lamprais here all represent authentic Ceylon flavors. Kalutara: A natural paradise Just a short drive from Colombo is Kalutara, a little-known hideaway. Based in Avani Kalutara, you can visit Asia’s oldest prehistoric site, Faxian Cave, explore Dodanduwa and encounter the cascading waterfalls, and pay homage to the Kalutara Bodhi Temple, which stands by the river. The activities at the seaside are equally exciting. Diving underwater, you can see coral gardens and shipwrecks that create a dreamlike underwater world. After landing, the delicious freshly caught lobsters and the sweet roadside golden coconuts are unforgettable. Designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa, sister hotel Anantara Kalutara Resort perfectly combines low-key luxury with coastal scenery, and is also a great starting point for visiting the mask village of Umbalangoda and the surfing resort of Hikkaduwa. The latter is also known for its vibrant nightlife and has many cultural landmarks, such as the hilltop Kumarakanda Vihara temple, which offers stunning sea views. Avani Kalutara Resort offers a twin room starting from USD 100 per night, including breakfast for two and taxes. Bentota: A symphony of architecture and nature Continue south along the coastline and you will arrive at the beautiful Bentota. The sea water and the river shaded by mangroves embrace each other gently here, and the scattered islands have become a paradise for wild animals such as monitor lizards, fishing cats, egrets, etc. This is also a great place to appreciate the tropical modernist aesthetics of Sri Lanka's national treasure architect Geoffrey Bawa up close. Stay at the newly upgraded Yasanohan Bentota Resort, and you will be within walking distance of Bawa's masterpiece, Runuganga Estate, and the dreamy Brief Gardens created by his brother Bevis Bawa. Guests can also visit Richmond Castle, which was built during the colonial era and tell a legendary story of romance and heartbreak. Adventure seekers can enjoy exciting water sports at Bentota Beach, while nature lovers can witness the touching moment when baby turtles return to the ocean at the Turtle Hatchery. Within the city walls that have gone through hundreds of years of vicissitudes, there are many fascinating boutiques, spice shops and unique cafes. Not far from the ancient city, guests can also visit the Surya textile workshop to watch artisans weaving colorful striped sarongs, saris and scarves. These unique handicrafts are perfect souvenirs. Continuing south towards our destination Tangalle, time slowed down as the crowds thinned out. At Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, guests can escape from the hustle and bustle of society and immerse themselves in this ecological paradise. There are not only turtle nesting sites protected by the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project, but also bird-watching secrets at the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary. Adventurous guests can go on safaris in Yala or Udawalawe National Parks, go boating in tranquil lagoons, or hike to the Mulgirigala Cave Temple for stunning panoramic views. "Lake on the left, Indian Ocean on the right" - this describes the unique location of Cinnamon Bentota Beach. This is one of the later works of Geoffrey Bawa, the father of Asian architecture. The hotel is located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka in Bentota, next to Galle Rd, and is about a 1.5-hour drive from Colombo International Airport. Cinnamon Bentota Beach was my favorite hotel on this Bawa-seeking trip, embodying his ultimate exploration of "architecture as nature." Although the hotel was renovated and reopened in 2019, its soul is rooted in Bawa's design manuscripts from the 1970s - a turning point when he broke away from the shackles of colonial style and embraced local culture. It's hard to imagine that this design is more than 50 years old when you check in. Bawa once said, "True luxury is letting the wind, light, and water flow freely." Here, he used batik ceilings to replicate Sri Lankan traditional crafts, blurred the boundaries between indoor and outdoor with open corridors, and even synchronized the pool with the lagoon level to achieve the spectacle of "architecture breathing with the tide." I highly recommend booking a lagoon canoe tour. The hotel staff will take you to find the original mangrove forest in Bawa's design manuscripts and look for the wild animals that live there. It's so romantic to drift on the lake and slowly pass through the mangrove forest! Good architecture is never noisy; it just makes nature more beautiful!
