Staying in the "Ham Ancient Village", a dream more than a thousand years
along the "China on the tip of the tongue" - "Nuo Deng ham" fragrance, I visited the ancient village in the mountains of western Yunnan
captured happiness.
Dali Nuodeng Ancient Village, a thousand-year-old Bai ethnic village
Dali Nuodeng Ancient Village, a thousand-year-old Bai ethnic village|||📍Located in Nuodeng Ancient Village, Yunlong County, Dali Prefecture, 140 kilometers away from Dali City
🦋Commercialization is not severe, preserving the oldest means of transportation. The village retains a large number of buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Early villagers made a living by producing salt and curing ham, with Nuodeng ham being particularly famous.
🦋It is a good place to relax and cultivate one's mind, away from external disturbances. The village is somewhat remote, so it is recommended to go with companions💜
🦋Photos 3, 4, 5, and 6 were taken inside a homestay. The homestay is excellent, and the owner tells stories. It is an ancient-style building. Photos 10, 11, 12, and 13 were taken outside the homestay during the day. Every casual shot is a masterpiece.

Travelogue of Nuodeng Ancient Town during the May Day Mini Holiday
Taking advantage of the May Day mini holiday, I made plans with a few good friends to visit an ancient and quaint village hidden in Yunlong County of the beautiful Dali Prefecture in Yunnan—Nuodeng Ancient Village. This ancient village has a long history and features a unique architectural complex from the Ming Dynasty, the Jade Emperor Pavilion.
In terms of transportation, it currently takes about 2 hours to reach from Dali by driving on the 'Dali-Yunlong' expressway, which also passes through the Shimen Pass scenic area in Yangbi County. My friends and I chose another route, passing through Yongping County on National Highway 215, where we tasted the local specialties of braised chicken and six-meter lamb hot pot before heading to Nuodeng Ancient Village. Although the condition of the national highway might not be very good, the scenery along the way is definitely worth it.
Upon arriving at the ancient village, the first thing that catches the eye is the well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, built against the mountain in a scattered and orderly fashion. These buildings are of timber structure, and the connecting roads in the middle are all paved with stones. At this point, the challenge comes because the guesthouse is located near the top of the mountain, and there is a long flight of stone steps to climb, but walking in the ancient village still feels like traveling back to that distant era.
The most famous thing about Nuodeng Ancient Village is the Nuodeng well salt, and the Nuodeng ham cured with this salt is even more exceptional, with a delicious taste that leaves a lasting impression.
We originally planned to camp at a place called Dalang Dam near Nuodeng in the Tianchi Nature Reserve. However, from March to June is the forest fire prevention period, and we were not allowed to enter the mountains... It was truly a case of 'arriving with enthusiasm and leaving with disappointment', and we could only leave our regrets for the next visit to make up for it...

My treasured travel destination, Nuodeng Village
A place so quiet it brings peace to one's soul.
⛰️ Address: Located in Yunlong County, Dali, about 170 kilometers from Dali Ancient Town
🚗 Transportation: Take a bus from Dali Ancient Town to Yunlong County (Dali Express Bus Station—Yunlong Bus Station, bus fare 60/person), then take a tricycle to Nuodeng Ancient Village (20 per trip)
Recommended reason tips❤️
Nuodeng, a millennium-old village, has no commercialization at all, not even a small shop in the village. Luggage has to be carried by mules from the entrance of the village to the guesthouse because the village is built on the mountain, with only guesthouses and a quiet coffee shop.
You can basically only eat with the guesthouse owner's family, and there are two stalls at the entrance of the village selling sunflower seeds and ice pops.
The local chicken here has been raised in the mountains for over a year. The meat is very firm, and it's the color of a black-bone chicken. The guesthouse owner stewed half and roasted half for just over a hundred, served with Yunnan dipping sauce, which is absolutely delicious!
Every morning you wake up to the smoke of cooking fires, the crowing of roosters, the barking of dogs, and the singing of birds calling you to wake up. Just sit quietly in the guesthouse drinking tea, everything slows down. Those travel photos of ancient towns can't compare at all! Of course, if you like a slow life, this is the place for you. It's truly a world apart, and some might feel there's nothing to do here, it's just a village.
By the way, Nuodeng ham is particularly famous here, a village that hasn't changed its name for a thousand years. I just specially pieced together a picture for you, the only place I want to visit a second time.

Nuodeng Ancient Village: A Secret Garden Hidden in the Depths of Time
Stepping into Nuodeng Ancient Village is like entering a time tunnel, where every step treads upon a thousand years of history.
Every brick and tile here tells an ancient story, captivating the heart and soul.
The houses of the ancient village are scattered in a well-arranged manner, with their earth and wood structures appearing simple and solid. The green tiles on the roofs shine under the sunlight, as if narrating the vicissitudes of time. Strolling along the cobblestone paths, it feels as if one can hear the echoes of history and sense the tranquility and serenity of the ancient village.
Come spring, Nuodeng Ancient Village turns into a sea of flowers. The mountains bloom profusely, their fragrance overflowing, attracting groups of butterflies dancing gracefully.
Autumn is the golden season, with the aroma of ripe rice wafting through the air, complementing the Cang Mountains and creating a breathtakingly beautiful picture.
Speaking of Nuodeng Ancient Village, how can one not mention the famous Nuodeng ham? Its unique taste and aroma are unforgettable at first try.
Here, you can witness the process of making ham and appreciate the wisdom and diligence of the Bai people.
The residents are warm and hospitable, their smiles as warm as the sunshine. Talking with them, it's as if one can hear the heartbeat of the ancient village and feel the simplicity and sincerity.
In the evening, sitting in the courtyard of the ancient village, watching the sunset slowly descend, a nameless emotion wells up in the heart.
Everything here seems so peaceful, so beautiful, as if time itself has slowed down at this moment.
Nuodeng Ancient Village, a secret garden hidden in the depths of time. There are too many stories and beauties here waiting for us to discover.
If you are also tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, why not come here to take a look and feel the peace and beauty that comes from the bottom of the heart.

The Mysterious Nuodeng Ancient Village in Dali | Where the wind blows
Today's destination is Nuodeng Ancient Village.
The first time I came to Dali, I wanted to visit this place.
It was only on my third visit that I had the chance.
Nuodeng is a lesser-known ancient village in Dali.
It preserves many buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Living off salt production and ham,
three-hundred-year-old residences
sit quietly in what seems like frozen time,
idly daydreaming
as they watch the wisps of cooking smoke, the sunrise, and sunset.
It's more comfortable to stay for a few more days.
'The hillside with tigers,' Nuodeng Ancient Village, see you next time.

Nuodeng Village
Nuodeng Village's alleys crisscross, all paved with uniform stone slabs. The houses are built against the mountain, and there are steps every three steps and platforms every five steps. No one can count how many steps there are in the village. We stayed at the Ancient Well Inn in the village. The only way to enter the village is to climb the steps, and luggage can be carried up the mountain by mules. There is no serious commercialization here, and the villagers living in the village are all Bai people. In the early morning, the roosters crow and the dogs bark, and every house is emitting wisps of cooking smoke, giving off a strong smell of life.

Nuodeng Ancient Village - A Thousand-Year-Old Bai Ethnic Village (Part Three)
Nuodeng Ancient Town is located in the deep mountains north of Yunlong County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is a Bai ethnic village with a history of thousands of years. The three to four hundred households in Nuodeng are mainly distributed in the mountain hollows and northwest sunny slopes of the village. Every household in Nuodeng raises horses, and from these horses, one can vaguely see the shadow of the former horse caravan. The village's 'Ancient Ancestor Square' and 'Muslim Square' were the permanent residences of the Tibetan and Hui horse and cattle caravans in the past. Yunnan Province proposes to rebuild Nuodeng and reproduce the splendor of the 'Ancient Tea-Horse Road' bustling town.
Nuodeng Ancient Town has a history of more than a thousand years. Over the past thousand years, the village name has never been changed, and the residential buildings of the ancient town are built according to the mountain, most of which were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Nuodeng Ancient Town is a settlement developed due to the salt industry, and has long lived on boiling salt, and was once an economic heavy town in the western Yunnan region. Looking up, the residential buildings are layered and well-arranged, including the Dragon King Temple, the Ancient Jiangxi Guild Hall, the Wanshou Palace, the ancient banyan tree, the 'Title Visit' of the Huang surname family, and the 'Lingxing Gate' in front of the Jade Emperor Pavilion, etc. The ancient architectural group, the ancient archway, etc., the archway in the ancient town is the largest ancient wooden archway in western Yunnan. The tall ancient Huanglian tree in the village, the tree is as high as thirty to forty meters, and the oldest tree age is more than 800 years.

A strangely named wild hot spring, she is a camping treasure in many people's hearts
Yangchimi is a river
Flowing at the junction of Yunlong, Yangbi, Weishan, and Eryuan
The green mountains along the coast are continuous
Villages and loess roads intertwine and disperse.
Local people call this hot spring Yangchimi,
Meaning a place as sweet as a sheep eating honey
🌟Highlights:
✅The hot spring is clear and the temperature is just over 40 degrees
One of the hot spring pools has a hole, you need to dive to the bottom of the pool to get in, it's fun and good for taking pictures, the experience is excellent, the water inside the hole is particularly clear.
✅It's about 120 kilometers from Dali city, about two hours by car, of course, this is without traffic jams (you can't directly navigate to Yangchimi, otherwise you might go wrong, it's best to have someone who has been there to lead the way). The mountain road is not friendly and requires certain driving skills.
✅There is a farmhouse opened by locals next to the hot spring where you can stay, of course, if you don't camp⛺️ here, it's a waste of this place. Camping here will charge a cleaning fee of 6 yuan, if you park, there is a parking fee of ten yuan, I think the charge is reasonable🉑 to accept.
If you camp, you need to bring your own camping⛺️ equipment, the most basic are tents, moisture-proof mats, sleeping bags, camping lights, outdoor tables and chairs, etc. If you want to cook in the wild, you also need to bring outdoor cooking utensils🔍. The most important thing is to bring money💰😎. In addition, you need to prepare slippers, swimsuits👙, swimming trunks🩱, bath towels, etc. for the hot spring.
📍Detailed address:
You can navigate directly: Yangchimi Hot Spring
After running, you can also go to the ancient village of Nuodeng to taste the ham on the tip of your tongue
Recently, many people have gone, if possible, it's best to avoid holidays.

Nuodeng·The thousand-year-old ancient village of the same name in "The Book of Man"·An ancient village that is still alive today
👉A village that has the same name now as it did thousands of years ago is very rare in itself, not to mention that the current villagers are descendants of the people who have lived on this land for generations. This is Nuodeng Village, located in Yunlong County, Dali Prefecture, an ancient village that is still alive today.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🌈Highlights:
1️⃣The Millennium Nuodeng Village is built on the mountain. The village is destined to be a path leading up to the steps, and the entry and exit of materials is carried out by people on horseback. It's a pity that the former "Staircase Market" was reportedly canceled because it hindered the passage of mules and horses, thus losing a major characteristic market.
2️⃣The good news is that the village retains quite a few buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including the Yuhuang Pavilion Taoist building complex, the former site of the Wujing Salt Class Tiju Si Yamen, the traditional Yoshiyin residence, etc. Because there is no modern building, Nuodeng Village is a veritable ancient village that is still alive.
3️⃣Huang Wenguang is the 19th generation descendant of a recorded family. His family tree records that many people passed the scientific examination, so he named his inn "Fujia Liufang". Huang Wenguang was also awarded the representative inheritor of intangible cultural heritage. His ham cured with Nuodeng salt is delicious, not salty and not greasy. It can be cut as thin as cicada wings and eaten raw.
4️⃣The Nuodeng well salt produced in Nuodeng Village is necessary for curing Nuodeng ham. It is said that Nuodeng salt plays an important role in making Nuodeng ham delicious and delicious. Therefore, in Nuodeng Village, the ancient method of extracting salt water to boil salt is still used today. The ancient villages, ancient techniques and ancient wells are all so vividly right in front of you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🚗Address and transportation:
1️⃣Nuodeng Ancient Village is located in the north of Yunlong County, about 6km away from the county seat.
2️⃣You can drive there by yourself or rent a car.
🎫Ticket information: No tickets, no parking fees.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
✨Tips:
1️⃣Staying one night in the ancient village should be the most correct choice.
2️⃣ Be sure to eat raw ham at least once, and eat it as soon as possible after slicing, otherwise the taste and texture will be affected by oxidation when exposed to air.
3️⃣ Drones can be flown in the village.
4️⃣If you encounter mules and horses in the village, please give way to them in time.
The quaint and elegant mountain village is absolutely stunning!
In the northwest of Dali Prefecture, there is a place called Yunlong County, named after the Lancang River, 'The river is covered with clouds and fog at night, and it gradually rises into a dragon in the morning'. In Yunlong County, there is a NuoDeng ancient village, which became famous because of its ham production and was featured in 'A Bite of China'.
For more than a thousand years since the Nanzhao period of the Tang Dynasty, the name of 'NuoDeng' village has never changed, so it is called the 'Millennium Bai Ethnic Village'. The tranquility here has not been broken by fame. The people living here work at sunrise and rest at sunset. There are no crowded subways, no bustling streets, they spend every day with mountains and rivers, and sleep with the sea of clouds. If you want to spend a few days away from the world, this is the best place.
NuoDeng ancient village is about 150 kilometers away from Dali, and self-driving is the most convenient way. Buses can reach Yunlong County, and there are about 7 kilometers from the county town to NuoDeng village. You can take a local tricycle to get there. If you can carpool, it is also suitable.
The entire village is built on the mountain, with houses stacked on top of each other, unevenly distributed, quite imposing. The lowest point of the village is 1900 meters above sea level, and the highest point is the Jade Emperor Pavilion, which is more than 2100 meters above sea level, with a large drop.
The style of the front doors of each household in NuoDeng residential buildings is different, and the style is quite grand but not lacking in elegance. The brick walls of each household have a history of hundreds of years, and the furniture, antiques, and daily necessities from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are still preserved in the house. The existing residences can be traced back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The famous NuoDeng ham is just a common dish here. Almost every household has ham for sale. The ham is marinated for three years and the taste is at its peak. It can be eaten raw, and the quality will decline afterwards. Perhaps in other places, ham can be used as a good seasoning, a small piece of flavor; but here, ham is directly used for stewing, and it is very enjoyable. If it is stewed with local red beans, the flavor is even better.
What impresses me most about this village is that despite its fame, it has not been swept away by commercialization. I have been there twice in the past three years, and it is still quietly located in the deep mountains. The residents there are very simple, doing farm work and making ham. The main means of transportation in the village still relies on horses to transport supplies from the bottom of the mountain to the top.
There are many attractions in NuoDeng Village, and you can take your time to visit and appreciate them during your leisure time. There are many steps on the mountain road, so you need to have a certain physical strength. When you get to NuoDeng, you can also go to a scenic spot, which is the Yunlong Tai Chi Viewing Platform in Yunlong County. Here you can watch a natural Tai Chi diagram for free, nature is really wonderful.
The ancient village of Nuodeng, which is rated as a national key cultural relics protection unit as a whole
Dali Nuodeng, a thousand-year-old Bai ethnic ancient village, such a small mountain village hidden deep in the mountains, poor and backward, even dilapidated, can make the whole village be rated as a national key cultural relics protection unit, it is really amazing!
Visiting Nuodeng, you really have to slow down and take a close look bit by bit.
The whole village has hundreds of Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the Republic of China buildings, nearly a hundred public temples, pavilions, and other cultural relics, such as the Jade Emperor Pavilion, Tengjiao Square, etc., are spectacular. There is also the only Confucian temple built in the village administrative area in the country, and there is a Guan Gong Temple next to it. The villagers worship both the literary saint and the martial saint, which shows how profound the cultural heritage of Nuodeng ancient village is.
The millennium Bai ethnic village, Nuodeng
Nuodeng - a millennium Bai ethnic ancient village hidden in the deep mountains
Decided to come to Nuodeng ancient village from Shaxi ancient town
Departing from Shaxi, after more than an hour of mountain road, I was really surprised. Walking along the river, surrounded by mountains, but passing through countless villages, seeing the different living conditions and local customs of each village. The terraces on the sunny side, coupled with today's big sun, are even more green and joyful. It's really a surprise to take the mountain road instead of the highway. Even occasionally have to give way to herds of cattle and sheep on the road, seeing the old women returning from chopping wood, carrying vegetables, carrying branches, all feel that life is moving forward on the road. Such encounters are what I really want to touch on this trip, but I get them unintentionally.
From Liantie South, take a short highway (about 30 minutes), then go down the road, pass Yunlong County, and quickly arrive at Nuodeng ancient village.
At the foot of the mountain, I ate the ham and local chicken from the farmhouse restaurant where 'A Bite of China' was filmed, which was really fresh.
I found that the state of the village is close to primitive, with very light commercialization. I decided to stay temporarily, go to the homestay platform to drink tea and sunbathe as a villager in Nuodeng, watch the mountains, watch the sunset, and watch the fireworks. Picture 1: The viewing platform opposite the village takes a panoramic view of the ancient village
The ancient primitive roads here can only be used by mules to carry luggage and all items. When I met mules carrying tiles, I really didn't dare to look into their eyes, do you understand?
We stayed in a homestay under the big green tree, the highest point of the village, but
I couldn't bear to let the mule carry the luggage, so I only brought toiletries and a backpack and climbed up by myself, leaving the large luggage in the car.
I'm going to soak my feet under the big green tree tonight, so I'll write here for now.
In a word, if you want to see the original, hurry up, many houses are preparing for renovation.
A glimpse to an ancient salt town
There are three ancient salt towns in Yunnan. If you want to visit them, prepare for an odd experience to ancient China. Nuodeng, in Yunlong county, is a hidden gem for salt and tea. If you chose to visit, prepare for an out of ordinary walk (hike) within the Bai minority’s most important cultural and architectural heritage of Ming and Qing dynasties.
Nuodeng is over 2,000 years old, and was one of the richest salt town in ancient China as belong to the Tea Horse Road. Nuodeng was also center of old Salt/Tea road connecting Dali (160km east), Baoshan, Tengchong-Birman, and Lijiang-Tibet in the north.
Most of the structures are made from mud, while part of the town looks a bit ‘modern’, most houses are quite old. Roads are mainly dirt, with a few stone or pavement ones, so wear the right shoes to enjoy the architecture that has endured for centuries.
This town very traditional, inhabitants mostly speak local language, therefore basic Mandarin should be important to manage. Also, you get to see salt wells and meat drying like old times. This village might feel like a labyrinth, but you can enjoy your time and shopping to invest in local economy (very cheap).
Only after more than two months, I came to Nuo Deng Village again. This situation is definitely a small probability event for me who walks the world. But who makes me like it here. Although it is famous for China on the tip of the tongue, I like the thousand-year residence here. The whole village is built on the mountain, just like a worldly paradise. Walking on the stone steps of the first level, watching the traditional and ancient buildings with a long history, they have to feel the speciality and exquisiteness of traditional Chinese dwellings.
yanmiaojin.
Finally, I went to the village of Nuo Deng in my heart.
chose a small inn along the way to stay, only because the first eye fell on the courtyard. A century-old house of cultural relics protection, a unique terraced courtyard, full of lush green, with the aroma of ham.
Click for a cup of barley tea, a book, it is an afternoon. After two days of sunrise and sunset, its a life of leisure!
Fish_and_Fish.
If you have seen an ancient village in recent years, Nuo Deng is a good heart. The layered Bai villages are built on the hills, and the patchwork is integrated into the mountains. Although it is known to the world because of China on the tip of the tongue, it still retains its traditional appearance. People, still enjoying the sunset as the sun sets, but the paradise is no different.
Fish_and_Fish.
Nuo Deng is the oldest village in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province. It is also the earliest historical book in the history of Yunnan Province. It has not been renamed in the village, and it is also known as the Millennium Bai Village. There are a large number of buildings in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Whether it is the famous Jade Emperor Pavilion or the residential houses, most of them are carved and painted.
Nuo Deng's dwellings are generally built on the mountain. The main room and the front room are not on one plane. Therefore, the four-storey eaves are formed. The rain falls from the sky to the courtyard of the yard. Five times, so the quadrangle of this architectural form is also known as the five drops of water.
The name is so chic, if you don't explain it, who knows what it means?
Most people in the village make a living by making salt. They suddenly admire them. I feel that such a simple life is nothing bad. It is a sunrise and a sunset. The years are smooth and peaceful.
Nuo Deng ham is famous all over the world. I am in the Qingfen of sweet-scented osmanthus, waiting for a bowl of ham fried rice - ham cut into thin and thin diced, add egg flower and mustard, then sprinkle some chopped green onion, ham Fresh, fragrant, salty, has become the soul of the whole fried rice. After taking a bite, I know that there will be no more fried rice that can exceed it.
Bean..
After more than three hours' drive from Dali, you will eventually arrive at the town of Nuo Deng.
Nuo Deng Gu Town is located in Yunlong County of Dali. The house here is built on the mountain. Although there is no Dali or the prosperity of the ancient city of Lijiang, there is more simplicity.
The outer wall made of brick and soil, I feel that the ancient town has already merged with the loess in the mountains.
In addition to the well-known Nuo Deng ham, I have to go to the top of the mountain to see the Taiji map~ I forgot to say that if the weather is very good, here you can see the beautiful starry sky ~ really super beauty! Come here and really have to stay for one night.
Kris Yang.
This small village built on the hill and the salt mines of the millennium and the hot Norton ham. As a destination, it was not particularly hot for Nuo Deng to have been at the tip of his tongue for so long. So that we took the 4-hour shuttle bus to Yunlong Bus Station, we couldn't find a carpool to go to Noord Deng, but because of this, I was even more looking forward to it. To say that the journey of Nuo Deng is more comfortable, blowing on the top of the mountain. Blowing, listening to the flowing water at the stream, teasing and repairing the dogs raised by the Wenwu Temple workers, dont even lie on the balcony of the upgraded room to listen to the sound of the mountains.
