The city of York dates back to the Roman Times and also played an important role during the era of Vikings when the city was renamed Jorvik and became a big trading centre for the Vikings. York continued to prosper in the Middle Ages and is the time when the world famous York Minster was constructed. York is easy to get to as it is on the East Coast Mainline, a trainline that runs from London to Edinburgh. It only takes 2 hours from London, less than an hour from Newcastle or Manchester and about 2 hours from Edinburgh too. The train station is a hugely imposing Victorian structure and is still a major hub in the UK’s train network today. Driving into the city is a little more difficult and I would highly recommend using a park and ride to get into the city. The multi storey car parks are narrow and the streets are often very congested. Some of my highlights to visit in York as a local: York Minster: York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, and the stained-glass windows are absolutely stunning. Consider climbing the tower if you have energy for an amazing view of the city. The Shambles: This is the name of a medieval street and is like stepping back in time or being on a Harry Potter set. JORVIK Viking Centre: This interactive museum is built on the site of a Viking settlement and offers a different look into York's past, focused on the times the Vikings settled in the city.
