[2025 Sofia Attraction] Travel Guide for National Museum of History (Updated Apr)

It was a trip to Sofia, Bulgaria. Just to share some of my favourite places and restaurants. Upon arrival, we were exploring the City Center. We visited Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. One of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, built in the early 20th century as a memorial to Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War. The Entrance Fee is free but donations will be appreciated. 📍pl. "Sveti Aleksandar Nevski", 1000 Sofia Center, Sofia We also visited the St. Sofia Church. The second oldest church in Sofia, dating back to the 6th century. It gave the city its name. If you want to visit the church, see the interior of the church, you will need to pay for Entrance Fee: BGN 6 (approximately €3). As for us, we just walked around the churh only. 📍ul. "Parizh" 2, 1000 Sofia Center, Sofia After walking around the church, we visited a restaurant nearby, Made in Home. They served Bulgarian and Mediterranean food. All the food were very good and the price range was around €10-€20 per person. Which is very reasonable as the food and services were both really good. 📍ul. "Angel Kanchev" 30A, 1000 Sofia Center, Sofia We also visited the National Art Gallery & Ethnographic Museum. Housed in the former royal palace, these museums showcase Bulgarian art and culture. We paid for the rntrance fee of BGN 6 (approximately €3). Very worth as you can see many art pieces inside 😍 📍pl. "Knyaz Aleksandar I" 1, 1000 Sofia Center, Sofia We also went to Boyana Church ⛪️ A UNESCO World Heritage site, this medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church features stunning frescoes from the 13th century. The rntrance fee was BGN 10 (approximately €5), slightly higher as compared to other church. But it is definitely worth to visit and we were amazed my the interior design of the church. 📍ul. "Boyansko Ezero" 3, 1616 Sofia Would also like to recommend my favorite restaurant in Sofia, Victoria Boyan. They served Italian and European. Their service was so good. The lady recommended us not only food but places to visit in Sofia. Do try out their dessert 🍨 after meal. It was really delicious 😍😍😍 It was around €15-€30 per person and we think it was reasonable. 📍ul. "Ivanitsa Danchev" 24, 1616 Sofia We also went to National Museum of History. The largest museum in Bulgaria, showcasing the country's history from prehistoric times to the present. The entrance fee was BGN 10 (approximately €5). We all really love to visit historical sites and museums so my recommendations are mostly historical related 😂 Last but not least, I would also recommend you to visit Vitosha Boulevar. Sofia's main shopping street, ideal for a leisurely stroll, shopping, and “people-watching”. You may consider purchasing a subway card to save on transportation costs. Accommodation Suggestions When choosing accommodation, you may consider cost-effective hotels or hostels. This way, you can meet your accommodation needs without putting too much pressure on your travel budget. Shopping Tips When shopping in Sofia, pay attention to local specialty products, such as Bulgarian rose products. These products are not only commemorative but also allow you to bring home a piece of Bulgarian fragrance. Overall, Sofia is a city full of historical and cultural charm. It is a beautiful city with unique European architecture that is so different from other parts of Europe. Getting Around - There is metro in the city and pretty convenient to get around everywhere. Attractions - Key highlights to visit include the iconic St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St George Rotunda Church, Roman ruins etc. Visit Regional History Museum of Sofia to understand more about Bulgarian and Sofia history. You will also be able to see the beautiful Vitosha mountain from Sofia city. Hotels - Recommend to stay in main areas such as near Alexander Nevsky Cathedral or Vitosha Boulevard. Food & Restaurants - So many delicious local food options like stews and Shopska salad in Sofia. Highly recommend you to book a local restaurant which also offers traditional music and dance, which is such a unique experience and good chance to understand local culture. Of course, there are other food options like delicious Italian food too. Shopping - The main shopping area is Vitosha Boulevard, which is a long vibrant stretch filled with local restaurants, bars and shops. #bucketlistreboot National Museum of History is another place to visit whilst in Sofia. It's a bit far from the centre but certainly worth it. We would also recommend going to the National Museum of History, Bulgaria’s largest museum. The museum is further out of the central area but offers great views to Vitosha mountain. The museum was moved to the former primary residence of the dictator and last communist leader Todor Zhivkov at Boyana, and showcases objects connected to archaeology, fine arts, history and ethnography. There, we saw the Panagyurishte Treasure dated 400 BC – 300 BC. #bulgaria #mountainview
