Design futures, the design marketplace, and design impact are the 3 key themes that will be explored and showcased during Singapore Design Week from Sep 21 to Oct 1, 2023.
This year's festival will be split across 3 design districts: Bras Basah. Bugis, Marina Bay, and Orchard Road. Because the organizer, the DesignSingapore Council (DSG), is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the council's motto "Better by Design" has been adopted as the theme of the festival.

State of prints 📰
Remember just how years ago print was everything? Every new launch, there must be print. It’s always exciting to open a new book or magazine, or the warmth of the paper when it’s freshly painted.
I visited the national design centre and came across this exhibition on print culture that talks about its relevance in today’s age where I feel prints has been largely reduce and digitalise to prevent wastage.
We get to see materials such as post cards, desk calendars and posters with technologies.
How is it different from scrolling screens of the same information instead of prints in this digital age. Are they still the same with the different mediums. Pulp or pixels?

Fifty Years Of Singapore Design
Address - National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969
The National Design Centre is currently showcasing a really interesting exhibition titled Fifty Years Of Singapore Design: 1965 to 2015! For us locals who grew up in Singapore, it’s definitely a must-visit as there will be many items that will bring back childhood memories.
They displayed items that used to be widespread in common public spaces and transportation, and an entire three walls worth of photos and descriptions charting the course of design history through the decades! Worth a walk down memory lane for nostalgia with this exhibition.
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Future of healthcare exhibition
Address - National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969
The National Design Centre recently had an exhibition calling for works of design to reimagine the future of healthcare! This exhibition was titled Health Care 2030, where various submissions from the National University of Singapore, DOA Architecture and Division of Industrial Design were put on display.
It was very interesting to view the different ideas and innovations of how health care and allied services could be reconceptualized, like how to build a dementia-friendly neighbourhood and incorporating diabetic clinics with farms that produce diabetic-suitable food!
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Everyday art design
Address - National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969
On level 1 of the National Design Centre, you will find an integrated lifestyle and exhibition space for various artworks to be displayed. The art pieces here are mostly everyday items designed elegantly and effectively with the end-user in mind.
If you come across something you fancy, most of these artworks are also for sale at a price that’s slightly more premium than the regular store-bought ones. This immersive space also has tables and chairs that are used by the restaurant within the National Design Centre.
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Architecture art models exhibition
Address - National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969
Getting to the National Design Centre is pretty straightforward as it is a short walk from the nearest train station, Bugis MRT. This is where designers and businesses can showcase their works of art and products, as well as exchange ideas and use the co-working spaces.
The exhibitions at its atrium change regularly. Currently, it is an exhibition of architectural designs and 3D models of various iconic buildings around the world. I was really impressed by all the detailing in these art pieces!
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🇸🇬 Singapore Night Festival 2024: Celebrating 'Festival Joy' in the Heart of the City
#festivaljoy #100waysoftravel
The Singapore Night Festival, the island's premier nocturnal event, lights up the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct once again, marking its 15th anniversary with the theme 'The Art of Play.' This year, the festival expands to three weekends, running from August 23 to September 7, inviting everyone to rediscover the joys of childhood and play in a historic setting that once housed Singapore’s first schools.
This edition of the festival transforms the area into a vibrant playground of light and sound. Visitors can immerse themselves in the festival’s signature projection mapping artworks that illuminate the facades of iconic buildings with stories and colors. These spectacular visual displays are complemented by a variety of night light installations crafted by talented local and regional artists.
Adding a unique olfactory dimension to the visual and auditory feast, "Scents of Being" by Aesop introduces a captivating light show that explores the intricate relationship between scent and memory. Set within a mystical forest environment at the National Design Centre, this installation invites visitors to navigate through aromatic pathways where each of Aesop’s eleven mesmeric Eaux de Parfum reveals insights into the themes of play, nostalgia, and the introspective journey of self-discovery.
The Singapore Night Festival 2024 invites you to step back in time and experience the joyous art of play in one of the city’s most culturally significant precincts. Whether you’re revisiting cherished memories or creating new ones, this festival promises a magical blend of art, culture, and playful spirit under the stars.

National Design Centre inspiring design in Singapore
#100waysoftravel
Housed in a former school compound in the Bugis district, the National Design Centre in Singapore is home to many local designers with their studios located within. There are also many thought provoking exhibitions on display at the Centre, which are usually free of charge to view.
The current exhibition takes a creative look at Food and Seeds, with contributors from Europe and Asia featured. My favourite was the display showcasing seniors as designers, where generative AI helped to realise the design vision of seniors.

Aesop's 'Scent of Being' Exhibition at Singapore Design Centre
#photolocation
Located in the culturally rich Singapore Design Centre, Aesop's 'Scent of Being' exhibition offers a unique and immersive experience that blends the art of scent with aesthetic design. This exhibition not only showcases the sophistication and depth of Aesop's fragrances but also serves as a beautifully curated space that provides ample opportunities for photography enthusiasts.
Sensory Journey and Artistic Expression
The 'Scent of Being' exhibition by Aesop is a thoughtful exploration into the powerful connections between scent, memory, and emotion. Visitors are invited to journey through a series of installations that interpret various fragrances through visual and tactile mediums. Each installation is meticulously designed, reflecting Aesop’s signature aesthetic of minimalism and clean lines, which complements the complex nature of their scents.
Photogenic Spaces
One of the highlights of visiting this exhibition is the array of visually striking and photogenic spaces created to embody each scent's essence. The use of natural materials, subdued lighting, and monochromatic color schemes provides a backdrop that is not only Instagram-worthy but enhances the overall sensory experience. These elements make the exhibition a favorite for photographers looking for that perfect shot that captures both the artistry of design and the intangibility of scent.
Visitor Tips
- Camera Ready: Ensure your camera or smartphone is charged and ready, as you'll find numerous opportunities to capture the unique beauty of the installations.
- Peak Times: Try to visit during off-peak hours if possible. Early mornings or late afternoons on weekdays often provide a quieter setting for both enjoying the exhibition and taking unobstructed photos.
- Engage Fully: While it’s tempting to focus on photography, take the time to truly engage with the exhibition's interactive elements. Allow the scents to evoke personal memories and feelings for a fully immersive experience.

National Design Centre
#familytrips2024
The national design centre is a place where people meet up to share their creativity , their ideas, and their inspirations together. There are many wonderful design art pieces there. Even at the outside of the design centre, you would be able to find some words printed on the seat. Our dream destination is to visit Taipei. We would like to put the sky lantern at shifen, and visit the shifen waterfall again as our next family trip. We enjoyed writing blessing words on the sky lantern.
