The Beijing Botanical Garden of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences is located on Xiangshan South Road, Haidian District, Beijing. It is adjacent to the Beijing Botanical Garden to the north and Xiangshan Park is not far to the west. Compared with the Beijing Botanical Garden in the north, people prefer to call it Nanzhi. The Beijing Botanical Garden of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1956 under the advocacy of academician Yu Dejun and other older generation botanists, and approved by the Central People's Government. It is positioned as: (1) a reserve of national strategic plant resources; (2) a research base for ex situ conservation and sustainable utilization of plant diversity in northern my country; and (3) a national science education base. The botanical garden currently covers an area of 74 hectares, including 20.7 hectares of exhibition area. It has 15 specialized parks and 1 tropical plant exhibition greenhouse, collecting and preserving more than 7,000 species (varieties) of plants; it has built a North China branch of wild plant germplasm resources (including seed bank, plant in vitro bank and DNA material bank) to support the "13th Five-Year Plan" of the Institute of Botany and the construction of the Institute of Ecological Grassland and Animal Husbandry. The botanical garden mainly collects and preserves wild plant resources in my country's northern temperate zone and areas with similar ecological environments around the world, focusing on the investigation, collection and conservation of rare and endangered plants, endemic plants, and native plants of North China. It also takes into account the collection and functional evaluation of important resource plants, the discovery and regulation of key genes, and the creation and application of excellent germplasm.Guided by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ “Popularization of High-end Scientific Research Resources” plan and “Science and China Science Education” plan, the Botanical Garden carries out in-depth public science education activities, receiving more than 250,000 public science education visits and more than 3,000 primary and secondary school students’ extracurricular science education visits each year. It has been awarded the titles of National Science Popularization Education Base, National Scientific Research Science Popularization Base, National Forestry Science Popularization Base, National Wild Plant Protection Science Popularization Education Base, National Youth Science and Technology Education Base, National Primary and Secondary School Students’ Research and Practice Education Base, Beijing Science Popularization Base, and Beijing Primary and Secondary School Students’ Social Classroom Resource Unit.
