The National Art Museum of Catalonia, abbreviated MNAC in Catalan, is a museum of visual art in Barcelona. The building of this institution dates back to the 19th century whereby there are inspirations of Catalonian Renaissance, where the state fully emphasizes on art. Inside the museum you will be greeted with the cupola with murals of arts, and the frontal from LA Seu d'Urgell of the Apostles. There are also a vast collections of the Altar frontal from Avia, Gia and Tavernoles. It also houses many Baroque art collections throughout the nations, and you will be intrigued by the greatness of masterpieces.

Historical art pieces in Barcelona’s museum
The National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC as it goes in Spanish) guards a large collection of art pieces from hundreds of years ago.
The exhibition halls inside the building are divided in three historical periods: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance, Modern Art.
As the exhibits follow a historical chronology it is recommended to start the visit at the Romanesque Hall, where one can witness mostly artworks of religious topics.
Continuing towards the Gothic and Renaissance Hall the line of religious artworks continues here, however can find pieces that are a lot more decorated and opulent than in the previous hall.
Finally, the Modern Art Hall displays a large array of artworks, from pieces furniture of the style Gaudí used in his buildings; to advertisements or war posters.

Rooftop views on Barcelona’s biggest museum
The MNAC (Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña) is the biggest museum in Barcelona.
Inside the walls it is guarding a precious collection of historical art pieces dating back to the Medieval times.
What not many people know, though, is that you can go up to the rooftop of this historical building, where to admire its decorated towers and observe the city of Barcelona from a privileged viewpoint.
To get there, you’ll have to find an elevator, at the end of a narrow corridor next to the cafe / bar inside the museum.
It is not obvious but it is not difficult to find either, click the button to go to the 5th floor and from there follow the guides to access the rooftop terrace.
I recommend to check it out on your visit to the museum, before, in-between or after visiting the exhibition halls.

Barcelona’s largest museum
We visited 𝗠𝗡𝗔𝗖 (Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña) on the side hill of Montjuic mountain
The visit was a fantastic occasion to enjoy time with Marc’s family, parents, uncle, aunt, cousins…and be guided by his uncle - an artist in Barcelona - through the exhibitions inside the museum
Can’t express the beauty of this area, big esplanades, fountains, majestic staircases and an architectural jewel from beginning of the 20th century
However, the most impressive aspects is held inside the museum, that boasts artworks all the way back to the Catalan romanic time (11th century) until the Modern era
𝗠𝗡𝗔𝗖 is open 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝟴𝗽𝗺 and 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟬𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝟱𝗽𝗺 (summertime schedule)
*A tip for visitors, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟱𝗽𝗺 and the first Sunday of the month
Prices vary depending on desired tour of the collections inside the museum: from 𝟮€ 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗲𝗲 to access the building and rooftop to 𝟭𝟮€ 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 that grants access to all the exhibitions

The National Art Museum of Catalonia is a fantastic museum, not least for the build’s grand architectural designs. Give yourself a full day to explore the museum and the surrounding areas. Don’t miss the Magic Fountain of Montjuic nearby, which you won’t because there’s be crowds of people around. #barcelona #museumquest

The charm of medieval sculptures.
The National Art Museum of Catalonia was built in 1926 and was originally the Spanish Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona World Expo, known as the National Palace. This large neoclassical Baroque-style building has four towers and a central dome. In 1934, the museum moved into the National Palace.
The museum's Romanesque and Gothic art rooms display sculptures from the Catalonia region, mainly with religious themes from the Middle Ages, which are also very interesting. If you look closely, you will find that these works are not rigid, but rather, in the quiet and tranquility, you can touch the pulse of personality, which is not ostentatious, but ordinary and distant.
For example, Figure 6 - Jesus in agony. His slightly closed eyelids, is it because he can't close his eyes because he can't let go of the redeemed? His slightly closed lips, is there any admonition that has not been explained? According to the introduction, this head of Jesus Christ was created by Jaume Cascalls, a versatile artist from Catalonia in the mid-14th century. This work has been colored, and now you can see that the beard, the crown of thorns on the top of the head, and the sweat and blood flowing from the forehead to the cheeks are all dark, contrasting with the pale and clear face. And when you face it, how can you be indifferent.
Another example is Figure 7 - Saint Sebastian (Saint Sebastian). He was originally the captain of the ancient Roman Forbidden Army, a devout Christian, and traditionally believed to have died on January 20, 287 AD. He was ordered by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who persecuted Christians, to be shot to death by random arrows. Miraculously, he was not dead after being shot through the heart by random arrows. Diocletian then ordered him to be beaten to death with a random stick. He was later canonized by Christianity (Catholicism), and January 20 each year is St. Sebastian's Day. He is also the most popular object in Western art such as painting and sculpture since ancient times. His suffering is an enduring artistic creation theme. It is said that he is handsome and young, and he was only in his thirties when he died. Therefore, many works strive to show his strong body and the shock and magnificence brought to people by the pain and destruction of the sharp arrow piercing the body. However, this St. Sebastian in the Catalonia region is slightly fat and not very handsome, just like the little brother you can meet everywhere - the saint is among the mortals. It has a power to travel through time and space.
The National Art Museum of Catalonia allows me to fully appreciate the charm of medieval art.

The National Art Museum of Catalonia Barcelona
The National Art Museum of Catalonia is located in the National Palace built for the 1929 Barcelona World Expo on Montjuic Mountain, 173 meters high in Barcelona. Catalonia, a nation with its own language, was once a European principality, and is now an autonomous region in the northeast of Spain, with Barcelona as its capital.
The National Art Museum of Catalonia, I initially thought it was a regional cultural and art museum in Catalonia, but in fact it is also a very influential national museum in Spain and the largest museum in Barcelona. Tracing back to the Barcelona Classical Museum in 1880, the initial collection came from church relics. It gradually expanded and merged, and it was not until 2004 that it was fully open to the public in the "National Palace" built for the 1929 Barcelona World Expo, becoming the museum we see today. The collection is rich, nearly 250,000 pieces, with nearly 6,000 on display all year round, showing the art history of Catalonia. The current exhibits are mostly sculptures, paintings, wood carvings and posters, etc. In addition to the artworks in the Catalonia region, it also collects and exhibits many masterpieces. The most famous altar painting is a work from around 1123 AD - a portrait of Jesus. I think it is unexpected that a museum that is not listed as a key itinerary has so many exhibits. Perhaps there are too many attractions in Spain worth watching or I am too ignorant. The rich exhibits have given me a lot.
The main exhibition area is divided into two floors, with a total of about 130 exhibition rooms. The exhibits are diverse, ancient, and highly ornamental. The modern art exhibition area also has many works from the 20th century, including some works and advertisements from the Spanish Civil War.
Ticket: 12 euros, free for the elderly over 65 and children, and free for students at different times. There are restaurants and cafes inside. A closer look, half a day is not enough. You can rest and dine in the museum.
The Montjuic Mountain where the National Art Museum of Catalonia is located can be said to be a landmark building in Barcelona. The most conspicuous building group on the mountain that can be seen from a distance is the "National Palace". Of course, standing on the mountain of the museum, you can also overlook the cityscape. The main venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympics is near the museum, and there are also Spanish villages, Montjuic Castle, Magic Fountain and other attractions nearby, enough for a day's itinerary. There is a special tourist loop bus passing by. The transportation is very convenient.
