Primitive and niche Tea-Horse Ancient Road town, Na Ke Li
The only thousand-year-old post station is Na Ke Li, and the myriad flavors of the world are best represented by Pu'er tea.
"Na Ke Li" is a Dai language term, meaning fertile land and picturesque scenery.
According to the "Pu'er Prefecture Chronicles", during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Pu'er Prefecture was the starting point of five Tea-Horse Ancient Roads: the Northeast Guanma Avenue, the Northwest Guancang Tea-Horse Ancient Road, the Southeast Jianglai Tea-Horse Ancient Road, the Southwest Dry Season Tea-Horse Ancient Road, and the South Mengla Tea-Horse Ancient Road.
Na Ke Li is the first station on the South Mengla Tea-Horse Ancient Road.
The quaint town lacks the strong commercial atmosphere of Lijiang. Clear streams meander through the village, flowing past the doors of closely packed small shops. The Tea-Horse Ancient Road ruins, Horse Jumping Stone, Heart-Connecting Bridge... the air is filled with the fragrance of Pu'er tea and a strong sense of nostalgia.
Walking along the bluestone road, searching for the faintly visible hoof prints, one can find the ancient Rongfa Horse Inn. The couplet at the entrance reads, "Who is the master beyond the mountains, we meet by chance and I host," full of the unrestrained and bold character of the horsemen. Inside the inn, there are stone water tanks, oil lamps, and stone chessboards, as if taking people back to the long years of neighing horses and ringing camel bells.
As people age, they tend to prefer places with fewer people. Focusing on the sunrise and sunset, the blooming and withering of flowers, the rolling clouds, solitude becomes the ultimate destination.

Puer, the historical charm of Nake Li Tea Horse Station~
The first stop in Puer, I chose Nake Li (a small village or ancient town)
Nake Li is an important station on the ancient Tea Horse Road of the old Puer Prefecture and was once the 'first stop' for Puer tea heading to Southeast Asia.
How did I discover such a niche attraction?
Probably because I particularly like these ancient villages, ancient towns, and ancient forts.
It is said to be very inconvenient to come from Puer city, so I rented a car and drove 20 kilometers through winding mountain roads to get here (you can navigate to 'Nake Li Tea Horse Station' or 'Nake Li Tea Horse Road', there is a large paid parking lot by the roadside at the village gate).
It is not the peak tourist season now, and Nake Li is not a famous attraction, so this small village has very few tourists, and the shops are mostly closed.
Overall, it takes about an hour to tour the ancient village, no tickets are needed, but there is a horse riding experience project in the village. If you ride a horse, it will take more than an hour and cost money.
I admire the not-so-well-preserved Tea Horse Road ruins. It was amazing how people could transport goods through these mountain roads in ancient times.
There are very few tourists here, making it perfect for slowing down.
However, I might not have felt the caravan culture and Puer tea culture.
Before leaving, I had a cup of Puer tea roasted milk, and I was very satisfied. The roasted milk had dried rose petals and red dates added, and the taste was really fragrant and sweet. This is the most recommended project, you must drink it when you come here!
(Be careful of mosquitoes and insects, I still got bitten)

🌟Highlights: Na Ke Li, originally named 'Ma Ku Li'. Legend has it that no matter whether coming down from Mohei Peacock Terrace via the Yi route or coming up from Simao, all horse caravans that entered the capital via the official road had to rest overnight at the 'Rongfa Horse Inn' in Na Ke Li. The caravans entering or leaving the 'Rongfa Horse Inn' had to wade through a small river in front of the inn. The tired or sleepy horses, facing the cool river water, would shed sad tears, hence the name 'Ma Ku Li'. The horse caravan leader, who valued horses as life, petitioned the government several times, and the government fulfilled his wish by building a 20-plus meter long, five-bay 'Wind and Rain Bridge'. Since then, 'Ma Ku Li' was renamed 'Na Ke Li'

Escape from the City | Enviable Slow Life in Pu'er·Nakeli!
| Enviable Slow Life in Pu'er·Nakeli!.
In Pu'er, I unexpectedly encountered a town just like the one from 'The Place with the Wind'.
Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, I seemed to have entered a secluded and peaceful world. On my trip to Pu'er, I didn't choose the commercially vibrant 'Tea Horse Ancient City', but instead, I opted for the lesser-known yet charming Tea Horse Ancient Town—Nakeli.
Looking up, there's the cloudless blue sky; beneath my feet, the stone-paved alleys steeped in history; on both sides, courtyards blooming with flowers, everything is so peaceful and beautiful. The villagers here are simple and enthusiastic, their pace of life is leisurely and comfortable, as if time itself slows down here.
This town is about 25 kilometers from the downtown area of Pu'er, roughly a 30-minute drive. You can stroll around leisurely for an hour here, feeling that unique tranquility and harmony. If you get tired, why not find a restaurant that serves caravan cuisine and taste the local delicacies? The flavor will definitely satisfy you.
After the meal, you can also find a tea house or coffee shop, sit down for a tea or coffee, and enjoy some leisure time. Basking in the sun, chatting, or daydreaming here is so pleasant and comfortable.
If you also want to experience this kind of 'aspired life', I recommend you check in at these shops: Yunlai Sheng Courtyard, Changting Wai Courtyard, and Deep Mountain Coffee House. I believe you will fall in love with this beautiful town and find your own peace and happiness.

Nakeli is a quaint tea-horse ancient town
It takes about 30 minutes by car from the Pu'er city area to reach Nakeli tea-horse ancient town.
The town is not large, and it has the early charm of Lijiang ancient city without being commercialized. The town is mainly populated by locals selling tea. There is one particularly large shop where you can experience tea making on-site, as well as taste the tea. The owner is very hospitable; whether you buy anything or not, you can sit down and enjoy a tea tasting. According to the owner, all the tea is grown by his family, with good quality and reasonable prices. In addition to tea, there are also several coffee experience halls, all offering a pleasant experience. We arrived around 11 a.m. and played for about two hours, not having enough time to see everything. If you have more time, you can stroll around the town at leisure, experiencing the blend of Eastern and Western cultures through tea and coffee.

Yunnan Pu'er | Dyeing the Town with Flowing Lights~
How to satisfy the contemporary yearning for a pastoral slow life? If you are in Yunnan Pu'er, I would tell you the answer lies in Naka Li. 'Naka Li' is a transliteration from the Dai language, meaning 'small bridges, flowing water, and a bountiful land.' It is an important post on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, bustling with activity from the past to the present.
In this town, there is a hidden plant dyeing workshop—Qianshan Dye.
The master of the workshop is knowledgeable about the past and present, integrating various techniques to create intricate and exquisite works of art.
The master uses different plants from the four seasons, combined with techniques such as rubbing or immersion dyeing, to capture spring, summer, autumn, and winter on these pieces of fabric. Taking away a small item is like forever preserving the mystery of this utopian paradise.
The dyeing workshop's cute dog, Qianshan Dye workshop, indigo dyeing, batik, snail pattern batik, indigo root and green persimmon set dyeing, patchwork embroidery, persimmon dyeing (wild persimmons), onion dyeing, camellia wax dyeing, rose rubbing dyeing
And many more plant-dyed trinkets are waiting for you to discover them personally
Finally, thank you to the enthusiastic reception of the Qianshan Dye workshop owner

Hidden in the mountains, the ancient Tea Horse Road post station | Pu'er·Nakeli
| Pu'er·Nakeli.
If you say you're traveling to Yunnan
and you're already tired of the hustle and bustle of Xishuangbanna
the noise of the ancient city of Dali
and have seen enough of the tourist flood in Lijiang
then come and have a look at Pu'er!
This place is worth your lingering visits
and it's not just about Pu'er tea and dried beef.
Nakeli was once an important post station on the ancient Tea Horse Road, a necessary path for the horse caravans traveling between Simao and the official road to Beijing. For hundreds of years, this place has preserved very intact ancient village architecture, and the old horse road still looks the same as it did hundreds of years ago. Due to its remote location, there are very few tourists who come here, but the rich products, the famous caravan cuisine, and the profound historical and cultural atmosphere are also worth spending a day here.
Visiting time: About half a day, it's nice to go to the village in the morning to see the morning mist. It's more comfortable to leave after lunch.
Location: Nakeli Village, Tongxin Town, Ning'er County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province
Transportation: It's a 30-minute drive from the downtown area of Pu'er, convenient by self-driving or taxi, but remember not to take the highway as there is no exit, just go directly on the G213 national road, it's ok

Nakeli, a time-honored rest stop hidden on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, quietly tells the stories of a thousand years.
Here, the ancient path stretches far and wide, and the sound of horse hooves echoes, as if one can still hear the camel bells of the caravan, feeling the simplicity and vicissitudes of time. Stepping onto the land of Nakeli, the first thing that catches the eye is a lush green forest, with verdant trees shading the quaint village.
The stone-paved ancient path winds and twists, passing through villages, connecting the past with the present. Strolling along the path is like traveling through time, back to the era when caravans galloped through.
In Nakeli, you can witness the historical relics of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. The well-preserved horse lanterns and stone troughs for horses to drink from all bear witness to the glorious years of the caravan.

How can one pass by Pu'er without stopping at Nako Li?!
Ten years later, returning to Nako Li, one can't help but exclaim, 'Such a huge change!'
Gold will always shine! Pu'er has two main pillars: tourism and tea. Nako Li is part of the ancient Tea Horse Road and represents an opportunity for rural revitalization.
Thus, today's Nako Li is inseparable from the government's attention, with bank poverty alleviation and assistance projects proving to be quite successful, attracting crowds of tourists.
Nako Li, this time it's just a pass-through, but I will come back, for I have beautiful memories here!

My Favorite City in Yunnan—Puer
Sharing my little travel itinerary
Nakeli Ancient Town is the least commercialized ancient town I've ever visited
You can buy everything there, olive honey for 15 yuan a bottle
I took a taxi there, the journey is a bit long
The driver might say that he needs to charge more (the reason being that it's hard to find passengers for the return trip)
But actually, it's not necessary, because there are always many people during the day
You can refuse the extra charge
-
Local specialties, like the sour and spicy chicken feet, don't need to be bought at the store
Ordering takeout is super convenient
-
Pay attention to the business hours of Yang's Puer Sour and Spicy Rice Noodles
They close in the afternoon (you can also order takeout)
No need to make the trip, the delivery won't spoil, and overall it's pretty good
-
Shen's Stinky Tofu always has a long queue
It feels like it's better to go there ahead of the mealtime rush
-
May 1st Farmers' Market
When I went there, it felt just like a vegetable market,
Since I don't live there, there wasn't much for me to buy
However, if you walk to the left of the market, there's a beef shop
They have their special dried beef
It's very fragrant when stir-fried in the shop! I bought some to take home!
It's much cheaper than in Xishuangbanna, definitely worth a try
-
I regret not allocating more time for Puer in my itinerary
I really like this city

Driving on the ancient Tea Horse Road to Nakeli
🌸 Travel Date: 2024.03.17
Yunnan has many charming towns, and Nakeli is one of them. Originally named Makuli, it got its name because there was a stream in front of the horse inn where the horses rested, and it was a tough crossing for them. Nakeli was an important post station on the ancient Tea Horse Road of the Pu'er Prefecture. The village is small, quaint, and quiet.
🌸 What to do in Nakeli?
The Tea Horse Road is paved with stones, with a total length of 30 kilometers, going up and down along the mountain terrain, and is a very well-preserved section.
The Sheltered Bridge was renamed Nakeli from Makuli because of this 20-meter-long bridge built by the government.
Rongfa Horse Inn There were 4 or 5 horse inns in Nakeli, and the best-preserved one is the Rongfa Horse Inn built in 1831.
Suspension Bridge The thousand-year-old wooden suspension bridge outside the North Village Gate.
The village has mostly coffee shops and tea rooms, 'coffee in the left hand, tea in the right' as they say in Pu'er, so be sure to find a shop you like to have a cup of coffee or tea. We chose the pavilion outside the courtyard blooming with bougainvillea, which is very beautiful for photos.
If you have time, you can also try the caravan cuisine, various rough-processed wild vegetables and air-dried meats: milk fan, dried meat, cured meat, etc.

Tea Horse Road, Nake Li
Tea Horse Road, Nake Li
As the birthplace and distribution center of Pu'er tea, our ancestors creatively opened up a folk trade route, the Tea Horse Ancient Road, which served as a communication and trade link with the outside world. Horses were the main means of transportation, and the rugged mountain roads were the carriers.

Nakoli is an important station on the ancient tea-horse road of Gupee House. It is the birthplace of the "Caravan Love Song" of CCTV. It is located in the south of Ninglang County, 16 kilometers away from Ninglang County and 25 kilometers away from Pu'er City. Very convenient. There are 66 households in the village. The two small rivers converge here. They are surrounded by mountains and waters. The ecological environment is good. The well-preserved Chama Ancient Road Site (county-level cultural relics protection unit) and the 100-year-old Rongfa old shop are partially preserved. The historical relics and relics of the horse-powered horse lanterns and horse drinking water stone troughs have a long history and culture, profound tea culture and traces of ancient culture. Adventurers from the United States, Japan, Hong Kong and other places have visited this place many times.
