A journey to Mount Ijen: Witnessing the sulfur miners
#indonesiatrip My trip to Ijen Crater in East Java was a humbling and unforgettable experience. Starting at midnight, I embarked on a challenging hike under the starlit sky to reach the crater, where nature and human resilience collide.
As dawn broke, I arrived at the rim and descended into the crater, surrounded by surreal blue flames emitted by burning sulfur gases. There, I encountered the sulfur miners—local workers enduring grueling conditions to extract bright yellow sulfur chunks by hand. With heavy loads on their shoulders, they climbed steep, rocky paths, often carrying over 70 kilograms per trip.
Their strength and perseverance were awe-inspiring, as was their friendliness. Despite their hardship, they welcomed conversations, sharing stories about their daily lives. The experience was a stark reminder of the human cost behind natural wonders and the resilience of those who work tirelessly in harsh environments.
Ijen’s stunning vistas and the miners’ spirit left a deep impression on me, making this journey a truly transformative experience.
