This dome is said to be the fourth largest cantilevered church dome in the world, following St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Florence Cathedral, and the Pantheon in Rome. The entrance fee is 5 euros per person, and you can purchase it at the simple ticket booth on the right side of the entrance. (Please note that the opening hours change depending on the day of the week) During World War II, a bomb fell on this church and did not explode, saving many lives. This is why it is called the "Miracle of Mosta". When I went to the church, I was able to see a replica of the bomb. During World War II, the town of Mosta was prone to aerial bombardment. At about 16:40 on 9 April 1942, the Luftwaffe dropped three bombs on the church, one 50 kg (110 lb) high-explosive bomb pierced the dome and entered the church, where a congregation of more than 300 people was awaiting early evening Mass. The bomb did not explode. This event was interpreted as a miracle by the inhabitants.

If you’re visiting Malta in 2025 make sure you take time to visit Mosta Rotunda, officially known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady. It’s one of the most striking churches in Malta, dating from the 17th century. Apparently it has the third largest dome in the world by width, after St Peter‘s Basilica in the Vatican and St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The outside also features an impressive colonnaded portico.
