People can’t help but wonder, what is the charm of Morioka City, located in Iwate Prefecture? In 2024, during my maple viewing trip to the Northeast, I traveled from Sendai to Aomori and visited Morioka City, a charming city. Morioka is located in the central hub of six northeastern counties in Japan. The urban area is run by the Nakatsu River and is surrounded by mountains. It has retro buildings from the Meiji era and the ruins of Morioka Castle with beautiful stone walls. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers, and the red leaves are dyed yellow. A beautiful landscape painting. This time I woke up very early and took a walk to Morioka Castle Park. This historical site was selected as one of the top 100 castles in Japan and one of the top 100 parks in Japan. The maple leaves and ginkgo trees on the stone walls were in full bloom, and the sky was red and golden. Slowly rising into the sky, it is really beautiful. Not far from Iwate Park, there is a beautiful building: the Iwate Bank Red Brick Building. Designed by architect Tatsuno Kingo and Kasai Manji Architects, it is full of Renaissance style. There are many kinds of trees in Oirase Stream, including red leaves, ginkgo, cedar and other color-changing deciduous trees. We stopped by Morioka Castle Site Park, also known as Iwate Park, during our drive from Sendai to Aomori, and it turned out to be a lovely little detour filled with quiet charm and history. Although the castle itself no longer stands, the site is still rich in atmosphere. You can see the remnants of its former glory—most notably the impressive stone walls that hint at what once stood here. We parked at the lot just beneath the park, which made the visit easy and convenient. As we were nearing winter, the cool air made for a refreshing and peaceful leisurely stroll through the grounds. The park was calm and not too crowded, which allowed us to take our time exploring the different paths and corners. We especially liked the small bridge in the center, which made for some lovely family photos. From one end of the park, we even caught a glimpse of Mount Iwate in the distance—an unexpected but beautiful bonus. When I entered the city, the first thing I saw was the Ishiwari Sakura. The cherry blossoms, which bloom by splitting a huge rock in half, are both powerful and quiet, and I couldn't help but stop and stare. Morioka Castle Ruins Park, located nearby, is also impressive with its stone walls and spacious grounds, and time flows slowly. It was cherry blossom season, and the petals dancing in the wind added color to the historic landscape, making it very beautiful. Nature and history blend into the city in this way, and just walking around makes you feel calm. Morioka is a quiet place, but it is filled with a certain charm.

This time I went to Iwate Hanamaki Morioka for a self-guided tour. I didn't expect to encounter heavy snow before departure. I drove for two days to visit Genbikei, Geibikei, Tazawako, and Akita's Bujiashiki. The snow made this trip more beautiful. There are not many tourists in Tohoku in winter, and there is less noise and more tranquility. The whole trip was very leisurely and I enjoyed the slow life in Tohoku, which is very different from the summer. I felt very friendly wherever I went. Iwate is really suitable for slow travel. Stepping into the park is like stepping into a quiet green world. The lush trees around you keep the hustle and bustle out, and the fresh air, wrapped in the fragrance of grass and trees, instantly refreshes you. Instead, the third-order oar was used as a castle tower. It is characterized by a stone wall made of white granite. However, after the castle was abandoned in the Meiji era, it was Parts of it were dismantled, and most of the remaining buildings were dismantled under the 1871 Abandonment Order and the buildings were old (so today, except for the Sora Hori between Honmaru and Ninomaru, there is basically nothing to see...)
