A Favourite Return to Erddig – History, Gardens & Heart
There’s something special about returning to a place that feels both grand and familiar — and for me, that’s Erddig. It’s my closest National Trust property, and every time I visit, I fall for it all over again.
Nestled on the edge of Wrexham, Erddig is more than just a stately home. It’s a deep dive into the lives of both the gentry and the workers who shaped this estate. The house is beautifully preserved, with room after room filled with personal touches — portraits, objects, and even poetry that honours the staff who lived and worked there. That’s what makes Erddig stand out: it doesn’t just tell one story, it tells every story.
Today, the gardens were glowing — the early summer colours are starting to bloom, and the air was filled with the scent of herbs and blossoms. I wandered through the formal gardens, past clipped hedges and fountains, and into the more natural spaces beyond the walled garden. There's something so peaceful about watching the light dance on the old brick walls and hearing the quiet rustle of leaves.
The orchard was full of birdsong, and I couldn’t resist a slow loop along the canal path, where nature truly thrives. Even the stable yard was full of life, with families, friendly staff, and a buzz of gentle conversation.
Best time to visit? May to July is perfect — warm weather, rich colour, and fewer crowds if you go early in the day. It’s a haven for garden lovers and history buffs alike.
