The Monastery, also known as Ad Deir, is one of the largest and most impressive monuments in Petra, Jordan. It is a monumental building carved out of the rock in the Nabatean Classical style. The Monastery is located high in the hills northwest of the Petra city center and was probably built as a temple in the early second century AD. The building is believed to have been designed as a tomb, just like most of the other monuments around Petra. The huge facade, the inner chamber, and the other structures next to it or in the wider area around the Deir probably originally served a complex religious purpose and were possibly repurposed as a church in the Byzantine period. The Monastery is a long way from anything, which is why it has fewer visitors and is a great winter getaway. To get to the Monastery, you need to walk up 800 steps on a path from the valley. Along the route, there is the Wadi Kharrubeh, the Lion's tomb, and many other tombs and caves. #christmastrip

Petra is more than just a famous façade — it’s a vast archaeological city carved into rose-colored stone. We hiked up to the Monastery (Ad-Deir) and explored hidden tombs, temples, and viewpoints. Every corner reveals new mysteries. Tip: Start early (6 AM if possible) to beat the heat and crowds. Sunset from the High Place of Sacrifice is unforgettable. --- Amman – Modern Soul with Ancient Roots We wrapped up in Amman, Jordan’s capital — a city where Roman ruins sit alongside hip cafes and buzzing souks. Highlights included the Amman Citadel, Roman Theater, and trying mansaf, Jordan’s national dish. It’s a great place to rest, recharge, and dive into local life after days of trekking and exploring. Tip: Head to Rainbow Street for sunset views and local snacks like falafel, knafeh, and mint tea. --- Practical Tips: Jordan Pass saves you money on visas and entrance fees (including Petra) Best time to visit: March–May or September–November People are incredibly welcoming — say “Marhaba!” and you’ll make friends everywhere Modest clothing is appreciated, especially outside tourist zones Jordan is the kind of place that stays with you — a journey of wonder, warmth, and deep history. 🇯🇴-1.2Around 100 BC, the Nabataeans, who were good at business and had flexible minds, made #Petra the largest trade center at the time, controlling the trade route between #Arabia and Damascus. It was also a transit station on the Maritime Silk Road, where goods (spices, frankincense, myrrh...) were transported from here to India or China. In 106 AD, Nabataea was peacefully incorporated into the Roman Empire, and the ancient city was renamed #petra (from Greek, meaning stone). After being incorporated into Rome, parts of the city were rebuilt according to Roman design elements, the Roman theater was expanded, stone roads were paved in the city center, and many buildings and statues were added. Therefore, Roman architectural remains can be seen in Petra. After passing Al-Khazneh, I chose the High Place of Sacrifice Trail on the recommendation of the local Bedouins. The locals’ recommendation turned out to be correct. Along the way, I could see the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, etc. At the altar on the top of the mountain, I met enthusiastic Bedouins who invited me to join them for morning tea. I took the hot mint sweet tea he gave me and listened to him talk about the past of this land. As we chatted, I felt my heart floating in the air with the aroma of the Bedouin sweet tea. Maybe there is a Bedouin soul in some part of me. After saying goodbye to the Bedouins, I continued along the mountain road towards the monastery (Ad-deir / Monastery). The monastery is the largest and most legendary building in the ancient city of Petra. At first glance, it looks the same as the Khazneh Temple, but the monastery is larger, 47 meters wide and 48.4 meters high. The two-story building is carved into the mountain wall, with side platforms on both sides. It used to be a meeting place for religious groups. It was used as a Christian church during the Byzantine period. A cross is carved on the back wall, hence the name monastery. I also had a good rest here, sitting in the small tea stall facing the monastery and playing with Mimi, who was not afraid of strangers but wanted to conquer the earth. Then, on the way back, I first walked along the main road, Street of Facades, and then went around the Royal Tombs. Along the way, we discovered that Petra has many diverse architectural and decorative styles. It combines different elements such as Greek, Assyrian, Roman, Mesopotamian and Egyptian. These are all the knowledge the Nabataeans gained through trade and exchanges with the outside world. They extracted design elements and techniques from them, and then integrated them with their national style to create great buildings that still amaze the world thousands of years later. *The British archaeological team that arrived in 1929 is still carrying out excavation work. Currently, only 15% of the entire ancient city of Petra has been excavated, and the remaining 85% is still buried under sand, soil and rocks.

In April, Petra isn’t just a set of ruins — it’s a living, breathing place filled with birdsong, blossoms, and silence. 🛏️ Travel tip: After a full day exploring, I stayed the night in a small guesthouse in the village of Wadi Musa, just outside the site. It was the perfect way to rest, enjoy some local food, and reflect on the experience without rushing. ✍🏼 Tips for Visiting Petra in Spring: - Arrive early:The gates open around 6 AM. You’ll avoid crowds and catch the soft golden light through the Siq and on the Treasury. - Wear good shoes: There’s a lot of walking and some uneven paths. Hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers make a big difference. - Bring layers: Mornings are fresh, but it gets warm by midday. A light jacket or sweater is ideal. - Don’t skip the hike to the Monastery – It takes around 45 minutes with many steps, but the view (and the Monastery itself) is absolutely worth it. - Pack water and snacks: There are some shops and tea stands, but it's best to bring your own for the hike. - Stay overnight nearby: Wadi Musa has cozy guesthouses and small hotels. It’s been my dream of mine to go to Petra for so long and finally at the end of 2024 I made it! It’s truly a stunning and amazing place to visit. I would recommend getting to the park early when it opens as there were very few other people around at that time. Jordan's most iconic site, Petra Ancient City, is famous for The Treasury, which gained worldwide recognition from the movie 'Indiana Jones.' Additionally, scenes from 'Transformers' were also filmed here. One unique feature is the entrance at the ticket office. After about an hour's walk, you'll encounter a section called the Siq. The narrowest part of the Siq can only accommodate four or five people walking side by side, with towering cliffs on both sides, creating a magnificent atmosphere. 😍 At the end of the Siq, The Treasury will appear. From The Treasury, you can continue to the less-visited Monastery on the mountain. The entire one-way journey from the ticket office is at least 8 kilometers, including a grueling section of over 800 steep steps. It's quite challenging. 😂 (This was introduced in the previous post.) Therefore, most tourists only visit the famous Treasury, which takes about 2-3 hours for a round trip. Nowadays, if you're willing to pay HKD 170 per person (one way), you can take an official golf cart directly to The Treasury without walking. However, if you want to visit the distant Monastery, you'll have to walk. 💪 PS: A 2-day daytime ticket for Petra Ancient City (6 AM - 6 PM) costs HKD 700 each.

Petra Monastery, also known as Ad Deir, is a stunning rock-cut monument in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan. It is the largest and one of the most impressive structures in Petra, measuring 48 meters high and 47 meters wide. To reach the Monastery, visitors have to climb about 850 steps from the lower road, passing by tombs, caves, and scenic views along the way. The climb is challenging but rewarding, as the Monastery reveals itself at the end of the trail. It has a classical facade with a broken pediment, a central tholos, and Corinthian columns. The interior consists of a single chamber with a niche and steps. The Monastery is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Petra, as it showcases the remarkable craftsmanship and culture of the Nabataeans. #cherryblossom2024

When visiting Petra The Monastery is located at the opposite end of the archaeological site from the entrance and main attraction, to get to the monastery you must walk for around an hour with 30/40 of those minutes being uphill, along the way there is opportunities to stop and upon getting to the top you’re treated to an affordable shop considering the location, seating locations and an option to continue to see a view of the mountain range that is the backdrop to Petra. One thing you won’t miss when getting to the monastery is the huge sign saying “Best View in Petra” hung across a mountain face that takes you to an view that holds up to the signs claim, at the top their is another shop that closes around sundown. Definitely worth the extra effort and hike to go and see.
