The Thousand Buddha Caves of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang are located on the cliff at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain, 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. They were first built in 366 AD and were built continuously for more than a thousand years, going through the Sixteen Kingdoms, Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Western Xia and other dynasties. The caves were not opened until the Yuan Dynasty. The Thousand Buddha Caves is a group of caves with rich contents and magnificent scale. It is also the largest, long-standing, rich and well-preserved treasure house of Buddhism and cave art in my country. The murals are of great artistic value. The murals are rich in content and include seven categories: Buddhist statues, traditional Chinese mythology, Buddhist story paintings, sutra paintings, Buddhist historical relics paintings, donor portraits, and decorative patterns. The wide variety of murals reflects the social reality of ancient times from many aspects, and provides extremely precious visual historical materials for the study of my country's feudal social history, culture, politics, economy, science and technology, religion, architecture, transportation, clothing, music and dance, and folk customs. Therefore, it is known as the "museum on the wall" and a "visual history" spanning thousands of years.
