National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea
#tripmemory2022
How about visiting the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul during the cold winter?
I went there in November.
I visited the Lee Jun-seop exhibition and the Lim Ok-sang exhibition.
First up is the Lee Jun-seop exhibition.
The family of the late Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung, donated 1,488 pieces of art (amazing), of which 90 were by Lee Jun-seop. Together with the 10 pieces from the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition totaled 100 pieces. It was very worth seeing.
He is apparently very famous in Korea, and I have seen his paintings of cows at the Samsung Museum near Busan and Itaewon. It really stuck in my mind.
He studied abroad in Japan and married a Japanese person, but his wife returned to Japan due to the Korean War and his wife's medical treatment. They were able to meet once after that, but they passed away without ever meeting again.
He loved and missed his wife, but he also loved and missed his children, and there were many silver-paper paintings of his children on display. I didn't take many photos, but I did buy the catalog.
Lim Ok-san Exhibition
I was really interested in the pamphlet I got when I went to see the Lee Jun-seop exhibition, so I went to see it a few days later.
I felt that the artist himself was living in contact with the earth, and that the power of nature, the beauty of nature, the love for nature, and the awe of nature were issues that humans cannot control or defeat.
Many of the works are very large-scale, but they are also delicate
I thought that the works had a very social message, and it seems that the artist is very interested in social issues.
In the courtyard, there is a bronze statue of a halmoni from the House of Sharing, and a black puddle that seems to reflect the weight she is carrying.
I tried to get another pamphlet to recommend to a friend who is planning to go to Korea, but there were a pile of them, but there was none left... Apparently RM from BTS posted about the Lim Ok-san exhibition, so maybe that's why?
Both exhibitions are highly recommended.
The Lee Jun-seop exhibition is on until 2023.4.23
The Lim Ok-san exhibition is on until 2023.3.12
They are still on, so if you are going to Seoul, please check them out.
