These very expressive angels is part of the well known Ghent Altarpiece ( The Adoration of Mystic Lamb) at the Saint Bavo’s Cathedral. The impressive altarpiece measures 5.2 x 3.75m, and is painted by Hubert and Jan can Eyck in the 15th century. It is considered to be one of the greatest masterpiece in Belgium. As for the gothic cathedral which stands at 89m tall, it is the seat of the Diocese of Ghent, and took nearly 3 centuries to complete. The Saint Bavo Cathedral is an 89-meter-tall Catholic, Gothic cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. It is the seat of the diocese of Ghent, is named for Saint Bavo of Ghent, and contains the well-known Ghent Altarpiece. The building is built on the site of the former Chapel of St. John the Baptist, primarily of wooden construction that was consecrated in 942 by Transmarus, Bishop of Tournai and Noyon. Traces of a later Romanesque structure can be found in the cathedral's crypt.Construction of the Gothic church began around 1274. In the subsequent period from the 14th through 16th centuries, nearly continuous expansion projects in the Gothic style were executed on the structure. A new choir, radiating chapels, expansions of the transepts, a chapter house, nave aisles and a single-tower western section were all added. In 1539, as a result of the rebellion against Charles V, who was baptized in the church, the old Abbey of St. Bavo was dissolved. Its abbot and monks went on to become canons in a Chapter that was attached to what then became the Church of Saint Bavo. When the Diocese of Ghent was founded in 1559, the church became its cathedral. The Gravensteen is a medieval castle at Ghent, East Flanders in Belgium. The current castle dates from 1180 and was the residence of the Counts of Flanders until 1353. It was subsequently re-purposed as a court, prison, mint, and even as a cotton factory. It was restored over 1893–1903 and is now a museum and a major landmark in the city. The origins of the Gravensteen date to the reign of Arnulf I (890–965). The site, which sat between two branches of the Lys river, was first fortified around 1000, initially in wood and later in stone. This was soon transformed into a motte-and-bailey castle which burnt down in around 1176. The current castle dates to 1180 and was built by Philip of Alsace (1143–1191) on the site of the older fortification. It may have been inspired by crusader castles witnessed by Philip during the Second Crusade. As well a protective citadel, the Gravensteen was intended to intimidate the burghers of Ghent who often challenged the counts' authority. It incorporates a large central donjon, a residence and various smaller buildings. These are surrounded by a fortified, oval-shaped enceinte lined with 24 small échauguettes. I visited, of course, Brussels and Bruges in Belgium. But I wanted to see a less touristy city, so I spent a weekend in Ghent. This city is small but so cute. The architecture is Flemish, and it's like Amsterdam. I visited the things to see like the St. Nicholas Church, or the belfry. I also took the opportunity to admire the street art because Ghent is very famous for it. There are even bike tours that are offered. I visited the castle of the Counts, and I advise you to take the audio guide because the comments are very original. The shop is divided into a ground floor on the street and a mezzanine floor. It is decorated in a cool industrial style. The pastries in the shop are sourced from local shops. This time, we ordered a hot flat white coffee to try. The coffee aroma was fragrant, medium roasted, and the milk foam was soft and fine. It was excellent. As for the pastries, we ordered an apple tart. The taste was good. It was fun to eat with coffee. Another highlight of this place is its great location. It is in the heart of the old town. It is close to the famous tourist attraction of Ghent, Saint Bavo's Cathedral, which is just a short walk away. It was a solo trip to Brussel and Ghent, Belgium 🇧🇪 Belgium is a captivating blend of medieval charm and modern flair, making it a fantastic destination for solo travelers. From cobblestone streets to grand architecture, there are endless photo opportunities 📸 I started the journey in Brussels with a visit to the iconic Grand Place, the city’s central square. This UNESCO World Heritage site is surrounded by stunning guildhalls, the Town Hall, and the King’s House. Early morning ☀️ was the best time to capture the beauty of the square, as the sunlight bathed the ornate facades in a warm glow ✨ and there were fewer crowds. I took plenty of pictures of the intricate architecture and the surrounding buildings reflecting in the cobblestones. If you’re a fan of history and beautiful squares, I would definitely recommend starting your trip here 🙌 📍Grand Place – 1000 Brussels, Belgium I also visited the Atomium, one of Brussels’ most unique landmarks. This futuristic building, shaped like an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, offers striking photo opportunities 📸 both from the outside and within. I would recommend exploring the area around it, where you can capture the sleek structure against the skyline. The surrounding Heysel Park is also worth exploring. I visited Gravensteen Castle 🏰 a medieval fortress that’s right in the center of the city. I would recommend getting there early to photograph the imposing stone structure without many people around. The castle’s towers and moat made for some dramatic shots, especially in the early light ✨ Afterward, I explored the Graslei Quay, one of the most beautiful spots in Ghent, with its picturesque buildings lining the river. We traveled to Belgium in July 2024. It was also the time for the very popular, Tomorrowland. However, if you can’t get a ticket just like us🤭. Visit Ghent Music Festival. It has almost the same time with Tomorrowland. It’s absolutely incredible experience, we had so much fun and truly unforgettable, and most of all it’s free. #ghentfestival2024 Just take a train from Brussels to Ghent. From the train station, you can either walk to get to the venue or take a tram. We stayed in Brussels and we had a day trip to Ghent for the festival. The train we booked for going back to Brussels is the last trip train and it was around midnight.
