Merdeka Square is the central square of the city. It measures one square kilometer or 75 hectares, making it one of the biggest squares in the world. It has lawns, fountains, gardens and monuments (the most famous and recognizable of all is the so-called "Monas" -- a 132 meter high obelisk-looking structure with a museum in the basement and a viewing deck on the top). Surrounding the square are some government offices and famous landmarks (such as the vast Istiqlal Mosque -- the biggest in Southeast Asia; the Catholic cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption; the National Museum; the National Gallery; and so forth).
Merdeka Square is definitely one of the famous landmarks in Jakarta. It is a must to visit this place for first-timers to the city. The place is really huge, so be prepared to do a lot of walking. In summer, the heat is quite scorching, so put on some sun block lotion or have a parasol to protect yourself from the sun. Lastly, the place is well-guarded. There are policemen everywhere, making this square a pretty safe area to visit.
