Famous weeping sakura trees
Maruyama park and Yasaka Shrine
Getting There - bus from kyoto station
We decided to see the famous weeping sakura trees lighted up at night hence made our way here after dinner. We purposely crossed by Yasaka Shrine. The area is bustling with actvities! There were many stalls selling food. The other sakura trees also lighted up nicely.
The main attraction here is of cause the weeping sakura trees, which were even protected by fence. Hordes of people stood around the perimeter to take photos. Thankfully they were perched on a hill hence it was rather easy to view it

There were signs saying that it had been renovated but you couldn't tell if it had. Quite average and full of tourists dressed up in rented kimonos you just couldn't avoid in your pictures and they actually try to shoo you away from theirs!

🇯🇵 Maruyama park | Dining under magnificent sakura tree 🎄
I think you might have seen similar photos to mine somewhere as it is indeed really famous location to enjoy hanami not only for locals but also tourists. Yes again, I am here to guarantee it 😉
I strongly suggest you to come in the afternoon or late evening when the place gets light up. The atmosphere is just other-worldly pretty as if we were in an illuminated wonderland. If you are lucky, you might be able to secure a nice spot to view blossoms while enjoying oishii meal in comfort.
Since you are still reading, my tip is to arrive in the evening and visit Yasaka Shrine first before going to Maruyama park. This shrine is extraordinarily beautiful before sunset. As soon as hanging lanterns light up, the red pagoda glows and shines even more.

🪷 Walking on the Maruyama Park
#cherryblossom2024
💮🩷In the midst of our enchanting vacation, I embarked on an exciting adventure to the bustling city of Japan. With the arrival of spring, the surroundings underwent a magnificent transformation, becoming a paradise on earth. As we explored the famous Maruyama Park, we were completely absorbed in the beauty of its luxurious landscapes. The breathtaking views that unfolded before us at every turn left an everlasting impression, giving us memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.
Hokkaido Shrine and the neighboring Maruyama Park stand as the epitome of elegance in Sapporo, attracting elite gatherings for hanami festivities. For a more exclusive experience, venture to the prestigious Nakajima Park, boasting a splendid variety of cherry trees, from the graceful weeping cherry to the exquisite double-flowering cherry.
This opulent and captivating sanctuary has engraved an enduring memory in the deepest corners of my consciousness. The sheer joy of revisiting and savoring every instance in this unparalleled haven is genuinely incomparable.🩷💮🌸✨️#mytravelhacks #historicallandmarks #localguides #familytrip

Maruyama Pure Relaxation
#cherryblossom2024
A perfect place to relax
In the large Maruyama Park in the heart of Gion district, you can hide from the hustle and bustle of the tourist streets of Kyoto.
It is interesting
Maruyama is the most famous park in Kyoto, where people come to admire the cherry blossoms
An amazing lantern festival is held here in March
Several temples were once located here
How to get there
From Kyoto Station, Maruyama Park can be reached by bus No. 100 or No. 206 in about 20 minutes. Get off at the Gion stop, and then walk a little bit.
You can access the park through the Yasaka Shrine, the main entrance of which is located on Shijo Street.
A sea of flowers
In the first half of April, the park is painted in all shades of pink. At this time, it is filled with locals and tourists who come to see the cherry blossoms. Here is one of the most popular places in Kyoto for hanami — admiring the spring bloom.
The most famous landmark of Maruyama is the weeping sakura, or sidarezakura. Cherry trees are illuminated in the evenings — it's a sight worth staying in the park longer.
Lunch time
Maruyama was designed by the famous gardener Ueji VII, the creator of Murin-an Park in Higashiyama. It is very pleasant to take a break here after a long walk and have a bite of bento, so that you can go for impressions with renewed vigor — for example, to the neighboring temples of Tion-in and Seren-in.
If the day is not suitable for a picnic, there are several Japanese restaurants nearby, and one of them is the owner of three Michelin stars.
Lantern Festival
Every year in March, the Higashiyama Hanatoro Festival transforms Maruyama Park and its surroundings into a shining wonderland. Walking among thousands of bright lanterns is a great way to get to know this place.

Maruyama Park

We spent the morning walking around the temples south of the park, and it was good to find a green place that had lots of places to sit and some nice views. I never expected to give an urban park like this 5 stars, but as my wife was taking a break, I started exploring and found it had a lot of enchanting places.
In particular, there's a stream (probably man-made) flowing through the middle, and you can cross it with bridges, across stones, and even on some of the stones if you have waterproof hiking shoes like I did. It's very popular with couples and I saw couples taking wedding shots, one proposal on bended knee, and lots of people in kimonos just enjoying themselves.
The middle part is more crowded but as you head East and uphill a bit, it's more quiet and there's a small (fake) waterfall that's quite cute. Mostly because the sound of the water release for the sporadic falls sounds just like flushing the toilet :-)
But a nice peaceful area to rest and to walk around. I think if the weather was more cooperative, the fall colours would have been evident as well. I would come back.
Anything travels
Kyoto's Cherry Blossom Elegance
My springtime visit to Kyoto, during the cherry blossom season, was a mesmerizing experience, a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural richness🌸. The city, known for its stunning temples and traditional streets, was transformed into a pastel wonderland with blooming sakura everywhere. Walking under the canopy of delicate pink flowers at Maruyama Park was like being in a dream, a moment of pure serenity and beauty🏵️.
The magic of hanami, the traditional Japanese cherry blossom viewing, was palpable. Families and friends gathered under the trees, celebrating the transient beauty of the blossoms with picnics and laughter. It’s a beautiful expression of Japanese culture and the appreciation of nature’s fleeting moments🍱.
For those planning to experience Kyoto's sakura season, I recommend visiting both the popular spots and the less crowded areas. The Philosopher's Path and Kiyomizu-dera Temple offer stunning views, but exploring smaller shrines and backstreets reveals hidden gems away from the crowds🏯.
Remember to be respectful of the environment and local customs. Hanami is a time for joy, but also for appreciating and preserving the beauty of nature🌿.
Lastly, don’t forget to try some seasonal sakura-flavored treats, a delightful way to engage all your senses in the cherry blossom experience🍡.

Maruyama Park in Kyoto, a Japanese-style garden
Maruyama Park in Kyoto, a Japanese-style garden|||Take a walk in Maruyama Park on the Gion side, the environment is beautiful. This Japanese-style garden park, established in 1886, is one of the earliest parks in Kyoto and the most famous cherry blossom viewing area. The 'weeping cherry' trees, which are over 200 years old, are a precious variety among cherry blossoms. There is also a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, a figure from the Meiji Restoration, and next to it is a statue of Nakaoka Shintaro, who was assassinated at the same time. In the summer, it is very pleasant to climb up the mountain path, passing by the stream.

winter and autumn colours were so nice
We spent the morning walking around the temples south of the park, and it was good to find a green place that had lots of places to sit and some nice views. It's not so crowded in autumn. The autumn leaves are also beautiful, You can take a calm walk.

After visiting Gaotai Temple and Yuandeyuan, I was planning to leave Dongshan District and take a bus to Heian Jingu Shrine. But my mother who didnt understand Japanese actually saw the street sign and found that Yuanshan Park was only 8 minutes walk. I thought that there was no cherry blossom in the park. I have seen it in the Osaka Sakura Palace Park, but my mother insisted on going, but I will go there if I am not far away.
The smell of charcoal barbecue smelled before the arrival of the fragrant incense, I really didn't expect Yuanshan Park to become Guangzhou Guangfu Food Street, surrounded by food stalls, cherry trees under the red table It's a bit like a food stall under the cherry blossoms. For the sake of the cherry blossom festival, everyone ordered beer, baked good food, sat on the table and talked about gossip, and occasionally a cool breeze, with a scene of cherry blossoms, I have to say that the Japanese really enjoy.
The beauty of Japanese cherry blossoms, I think that except for the dense flowers of the branches, its branches grow very low, unlike the cherry blossoms of our Jiangnan.
