Marsaxlokk - a step back in time in this quaint Maltese fishing village
On our bus journey to one of Malta’s southern most towns - the heavens opened - not great when you’re sitting on a leaky bus!
But by the time we got to Marsaxlokk, pronounced as Marsa Shlock, things were a lot calmer. This village, on the southern tip - is Malta’s largest fishing village. But it’s also famous for its colourful luzzu boats that adorn the harbour. It’s a picture perfect town, and a great place to whittle away a few hours admiring the scenery and watching the world go by.
Make sure you stop for some seafood in the many restaurants that adorn this town. And of course, bring your camera. There will be plenty of photo opportunities!

Malta Travel|Unique food, sea adventure, enjoy your trip to Malta!
Here, located in the east of the main island of Malta, hides a charming fishing port scenery - Marsaxlokk Fishing Port🌊.
As soon as you step into the fishing port, you will be attracted by the traditional Maltese fishing boats in front of you. The bright colors on their ships are like a rainbow falling on the sea, making the entire port full of life and vitality🌈.
Strolling along the shore of the fishing village, you will find traces of markets and restaurants. Here, you can find some unique handicrafts and taste authentic Maltese cuisine🍽️.
I highly recommend searching for "Zatoka Marsaxlokk" if you come here on Sunday. On that day, the market will be more lively and the choices will be richer, making your travel experience even better 🆙!
Of course, how can you miss the opportunity to go out to sea when you come to the fishing port? You can choose to take a boat trip to explore the surrounding waters and islands. Standing at the bow, feeling the sea breeze on your face, and looking out at the sea and sky in the distance, it seems as if the whole world belongs to you🌅.

Marsaxlokk Bay | A Painting-like Malta
Marsaxlokk Bay is the busiest bay in Malta, with many local fishing boats docked. The striking blue and yellow colors are hard to miss, and the locals call them Luzzu. The prows are all painted with the Eye of Horus to bless the fishermen with safety at sea🚢.
Close to the shore is a row of restaurants, which my friend says is just like the food stalls in Shanghai ! Europeans are not afraid of exhaust fumes; they love to sit on the road, eat, and bask in the sun ! Perhaps because the population is not large, it's not easy to meet people often, so everyone is busy chatting. It's rare to see people looking down at their phones📱
🚉Transportation tips: You can take bus🚌 83 or 119 to get there directly.
📝Note tips: Every Sunday there is a fish market in the bay where you can buy the freshest seafood at very low prices. Even if you don't buy anything, it's a great spot for taking photos

Marsaxlokk Fish Market | A market without the smell of fish
Every Sunday morning, the fish market at Marsaxlokk Bay, located in the southeastern corner of Malta, Europe, becomes exceptionally lively. The odor-free fish market attracts numerous tourists and locals. Seafood, vegetables, desserts, and souvenirs are abundant and so cheap that you don't have to worry about the exchange rate However, what I love most are the diverse crowds; they are the most vivid representation of the market's atmosphere !
❤ Recommended because:
Experience the local life of Malta
Irresistible seafood at bargain prices
🧳 What to prepare before going:
Bring an eco-friendly shopping bag and prepare cash, as the market does not accept cards!
⏳ Visiting time: 2 hours

Visiting Malta, you must check out this colorful fish market
Who would have thought that I would be browsing a vegetable market in Malta. Every Sunday, there is a famous fish market in Malta - Marsaxlokk, located on the southeast side of Malta Island.
🟧Background
As early as BC, this place was already used by the Phoenicians and later the Romans. Now, this bay is filled with brightly colored traditional Maltese fishing boats—Luzzu, painted in a rainbow of colors, becoming a unique scenery of the fish market.
And just like the locals, I came here early in the morning to browse the fish market. The fish market is not as big and fishy as I imagined, it's just a street by the sea. Many locals come here early on Sundays to buy freshly caught fish. Looking at the prices, they are really cheap! A whole sea fish for a few euros, and even large black tiger prawns are only a few euros per kilogram. It's a pity that our hotel does not have a kitchen, otherwise, we could really buy some and cook ourselves.
Although it's a fish market, it feels more like a small commodity market. In addition to seafood, there are also vegetables, fruits, alcohol, clothing, and various other types of stalls. All kinds of small commodities are available. I also bought a fridge magnet and a ceramic placemat here.
Even though we couldn't cook for ourselves, there are many restaurants around the fish market that use local seafood as their main ingredient. We also tasted one of the most delicious seafood feasts in Malta here. Such a meal costs only about sixty euros.
⏰Opening hours: Every Sunday from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm
📍Navigation: Marsaxlokk Bay
🚗Transportation
- It costs about a dozen euros to take a taxi from the capital Valletta
- If you take the bus, use Google Map to search for the bus route to
"Marsaxlokk", with direct buses typically running once an hour
About 30 minutes by bus from the capital Valletta, Marsaxlokk fishing village is considered a place of convergence of colors. From the pure white Luzzu boats to the gentle blue water reflecting the sunlight. All create a poetic, poetic picture that touches the heart.
Coming here, you can stroll along the river, visit the fishing village and enjoy specialties in the harbor restaurants.
