#Maijishan Grottoes Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Maijishan Grottoes
I set out on a mission to travel the starting points of the historical silk road, as a solo traveler who speaks very little Chinese. This opportunity put me at the forefront of seeing some places that seem far flung from the mass cities in the east.
Maijishan Grottoes are carved into the beautiful mountain the rises from the ground, high into the sky. There are intricately carved designs and Buddhas on this beautiful mountain, that allowed travelers to stop, rest and pray for good passage.
On the day I arrived, the weather was bad, so you couldn't climb the grottoes themselves, but to see this beautiful place is worth it.
I stayed in the village just outside of the scenic area, I suggest for any future travelers, you visit the city of Tianshui, and take a bus or a taxi to the scenic area.

20 degrees of Gansu! Fish Life's first parent-child trip
Where to go on weekends? What can I play in two days? Let the fish slowly come here to travel in person.
This is the first time in the life of a fisherman to travel personally, with a 10-month-old baby to go to Gansu Tianshui. Xi'an's summer is really a real version of the stove, listen to Tianshui friends said that Tianshui summer average temperature is more than 20 degrees, very cool, and Tianshui is not far from Xi'an, the first time with a baby travel, choose a suitable distance The place where the temperature is perfect is also awkward. Just hit it and leave.
Transportation: Xi'an - Tianshui High-speed rail 1 and a half hours
Itinerary
The well-known Maiji Mountain Grottoes is one of the four major caves in China. The mud sculptures of the Maiji Mountain Grottoes are vivid and vivid. It is known as the Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall and is one of the attractions that will be hit after the Gansu. Maiji Mountain is famous for its exquisite clay sculpture art. At the same time, the Maiji Mountain Grottoes retain a large amount of material materials such as religion, art and architecture, reflecting the characteristics of statues of various eras over the past thousand years. It also visited the development and evolution of Chinese clay sculpture art. Tianshui, where Maiji Mountain is located, was once called "Qinzhou". It was the seal of the ancestors of Emperor Qin Shihuang. It was a very dangerous thing to go west from the east to the west. People prayed for themselves and carved on the nearby cliffs. Buddha statue, in order to obtain the blessing of the Buddha after death. Watching the sculpture at close range, the production is extremely beautiful. The clay sculpture here can be roughly divided into high-floating plastic protruding from the wall surface, round plastic which completely leaves the wall surface, and molded shadows and wall moldings on the wall surface. For treasures. Boarding the grotto, wishing for the distant mountains and the sea of clouds, the mood is comfortable. Today's Maiji Mountain Grottoes have been used as part of the Silk Road: the road network of Chang'an-Tianshui Corridor, which has also been identified as a World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Climbing up a layer of plank road, before it was too tired, it was shocked by a beautiful statue. Just as the Maiji Mountain Grottoes cannot be described as a natural, cultural or intangible heritage, these statues are not only art, but also history and faith. More than 7,800 clay sculptures, stone carvings, stone clay sculptures, wood carvings, etc., sculpt, sculpt, is a gem.
The Maiji Mountain Grottoes are named after the shape of the mountain. There are many Buddha statues in the grotto. The Buddha statue here is very different. The Buddha's eyes look more radiant than other Buddha statues, because the eyes are made of glass, and the light shines like a living. However, because of the age, some Buddha statues have been swayed, and the preserved Buddha statues are now well protected, and most of them can only be viewed through the fence. This four famous caves in China are indeed worth seeing.
Maijishan Grottoes Travel Guide, the most successful follow-the-trend experience!!!
🌱Transportation: Self-driving is recommended
Opening Hours:
Summer (April 1st to October 31st) 8:30-17:30, no entry after 16:00;
Winter (November 1st to March 31st) 9:00-17:00, no entry after 15:30.
🌱Maijishan Grottoes:
1. Divided into free grottoes and ticketed special caves. The free grottoes are smaller, blocked by nets, and can be viewed directly; there are 15 special caves in total, each charged separately (prices are about 120-180 yuan). You can find an introduction to each cave on the official WeChat account, to know in advance which cave you want to visit.
2. Explanation: At the entrance of Maijishan, there will be tour guides, charging about 50 yuan (it is not recommended to choose them, as they cannot follow into the caves to explain). There are professional guides at the bottom of the grottoes, with a fee of 120 yuan per guide (you can form a group, go to register the cave you want to visit, and then wait for grouping, the more people, the cheaper the cost, about 10 yuan per person, or you can choose to hire a guide individually).
3. Fees: Special cave and guide fees are paid on site (no online ticket purchase), tickets can be bought online, and the scenic area provides a shuttle service. After entering the Maijishan gate, there is still a distance to cover, it is recommended to choose the shuttle, which is labor-saving and convenient (Maijishan ticket is about 80 yuan, shuttle fee is 15 yuan).
🌱Xianren Cliff: The distance from Maijishan Grottoes to Xianren Cliff is not far, there is a bus but it is slow and not recommended (previously waited for several hours without it arriving). There are private cars available below the grottoes to go there, shared by several people, about 10-15 yuan per person (if you feel the price is too high, you can try to bargain). After arriving, you need to take a scenic shuttle to go up the mountain (fee is 10 yuan), the site is not big, you can finish the tour quickly, but there are many steps to climb, and the scenery is very beautiful (ticket is 20 yuan).
🌱Hot and Spicy Soup: There is a direct line from Tianshui South to the hot and spicy soup restaurant, volunteers are available to guide you out of the station, this line is non-stop and goes directly to the destination (previously, some popular stores had waiting times of up to 4 hours). Due to the large number of people, I chose an ordinary store, the taste was not bad, moderately spicy but very fragrant.
The May Day holiday is approaching, come and visit the Maijishan Grottoes to admire the Buddha statues
Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui, Gansu, is one of the four famous grottoes in China, named for its resemblance to a stack of wheat straw. Amidst the continuous green mountains, the Maijishan stands out with its steep cliffs on all sides, covered with green trees at the top. One cannot help but admire the natural wonder shaped by the forces of nature. Today, we will focus on admiring several Buddha statues.
The Serene Buddha. This Buddha statue leans against the cave wall, with a painted ruyi cloud pattern behind it. Although the mural is peeling, the vibrant colors are still striking. The Buddha wears a hat and is draped in a kasaya. The face is full and well-defined, with slightly open eyes looking diagonally to the left front. The right arm is bent and raised, with the palm facing out. The statue has smooth lines and is well-proportioned.
The Dharma Transmission Buddha. This Buddha statue wears a red and blue robe and a pointed hat. With a straight nose and square mouth, the corners of the mouth are slightly raised, looking straight ahead with a resolute gaze. The Buddha's ears are clear in outline, plump, soft, and perfectly curved, with long round earlobes. The posture is upright and majestic.
The Demon-Subduing Buddha. This Buddha statue has a unique and relaxed sitting posture, with the left leg hanging down, foot pressing on a lotus flower, and the left hand supporting from behind; the right leg is raised and bent in a squatting position, with the right hand resting on the knee, looking straight ahead.
The Preaching Buddha. The Buddha statue wears a hat and has kind eyebrows and benevolent eyes. The face is full and round, with a slight smile. The Buddha is draped in a robe that is wide and flowing, with clear and casual folds, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of the artisans.
The Tranquil Buddha. This is the most beautiful Buddha statue. The face is serene, with a slight smile. With curved eyebrows and delicate eyes, the gaze is lowered, the nose bridge is high and straight, and the corners of the mouth are upturned, dignified and elegant, gentle and beautiful, like a tranquil lotus flower, embodying wisdom and tolerance. After a long gaze, one feels inner peace and lightness, as if the clouds are light and the breeze is gentle.
According to records, the Maijishan Grottoes were first constructed during the Later Qin period of the Sixteen Kingdoms, and have undergone excavation and renovation over more than 1600 years through the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. There are currently 221 caves, 3938 statues in 10632 figures, and 979.54 square meters of murals. The Maijishan Grottoes provide rich materials and historical records for future generations to study Chinese Buddhist culture.

Maijishan Grottoes | A World in Every Grotto
Taking advantage of the popularity of Tianshui hot and spicy soup,
I made a trip to one of the four famous grottoes,
the Maggie Mountain Grottoes.
The place was incredibly crowded.
It cost 80 yuan to take a taxi from the downtown area,
and then I took a sightseeing bus upon arrival.
The journey wasn't long,
but it's not very friendly for those with a fear of heights.
I didn't hire a guide,
just had a quick look around.
I saw many Buddhas with mysterious Eastern smiles.
Definitely worth a visit.
Maijishan Grottoes, a natural emoticon library
Maijishan Grottoes, a place I've longed for a long time. 😄
Everyone says that the expressions of the sculptures here are comparable to emoticons, which to me just feel more down-to-earth and lively. Some of the expressions on the sculptures seem to have appeared on the faces of neighbors' uncles and aunties as well.
The grottoes mainly preserve clay sculptures, which have continuously evolved over the dynasties. From the early and late Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang to the Song dynasties.
Despite my fear of heights, I still think it's very worthwhile to see these precious works of art.

YUQUAN TEMPLE
🌈Named for the 'Jade Spring' of the Yuan Dynasty. It boasts over 90 Taoist buildings and is known as the 'Number One Famous Temple in Southeastern Gansu';
Nanshan Scenic Area (Nanguo Temple)
🌈With a history of over a thousand years, it has been a favorite spot for poets and scholars throughout the ages. The great poet Du Fu wrote over 100 poems in praise of it during his visit.
Tianshui Ancient City
🌈One of the largest and best-preserved residential courtyards from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the northwest region. It's better to go at night to see the night view. It's near the Fuxi Temple, and you can stay nearby at night and go directly to the Fuxi Temple the next day. An hour is enough
Maijishan Grottoes
🌈Second only to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, it is China's second-largest art cave and is known as the 'Eastern Art Sculpture Gallery'. It is one of the four major grottoes. The Maijishan area is the most worthwhile place to spend time. You can view from a distance and climb the plank road for a detailed appreciation. Generally, it takes about two hours, but if you like sculpture and mural art, time is not a limit.
⭐️Transportation: About 100 yuan by taxi from Tianshui South Station, or you can take a bus
Maiji Never Night City: Intangible cultural heritage folk customs, performances, snacks, fruits, nearly 200 stalls, experience the local night market.
Tianshui City Industrial Museum
🌈Features a science and technology experience hall, time corridor, and industrial history museum, providing insight into the industrial development of Tianshui.
Maijishan Grottoes
🌈95 RMB per person for advance reservation includes the grotto scenic area + sightseeing car, and is known as one of China's four major grottoes along with the Mogao Caves, Longmen Grottoes, and Yungang Grottoes
Maijishan Grottoes--Immortal Cliff
🌈This section has a direct bus for 50 RMB per person (including round-trip direct bus + Immortal Cliff ticket + scenic area sightseeing car)
⭐️It is really recommended to buy this as it is convenient and time-saving, and the scenery of Immortal Cliff is really good with very few tourists. It consists of three cliffs, five peaks, and six temples, mainly touring the three cliffs you can climb the mountain following the route 'West Cliff--East Cliff--South Cliff' without taking the same way back and not missing any scenery
Tianshui Botanical Garden (inside Maijishan)
🌈Not considered a separate attraction, there are ice waterfalls in winter, which are still worth seeing. It takes about half an hour to walk in and out, and if you're looking at the ice waterfalls, it will take a bit longer. It's inside Maijishan and worth a visit.
North and South Houses (Hu Family Ancestral Home)
🌈After breakfast, it's just a few steps away. This is the only remaining official residence from the Ming Dynasty in the northwest region. Because there are two parts, south and north, it is also called North and South Houses. The South House is larger, and the North is slightly smaller. There is an underground passage connecting the North and South Houses, but unfortunately, it was not open when we visited. This place is open to the public for free~ Behind the North and South Houses is the Temple of Literature, one and a half to two hours is enough
Fuxi Temple and Tianshui Museum
🌈The entrance fee for Fuxi Temple is 20 RMB, and it is open for free at certain times. There is a large square in front of the gate, which is probably the place for holding grand ceremonies. The dragon and phoenix window inside is from the Ming Dynasty and is very exquisite. The little red figures used for blessings on the trees in the temple are also quite interesting. Behind the Fuxi Temple is the Tianshui Museum, which is free to visit and can be accessed directly.

Gansu Tianshui | The Most Beautiful "Eastern Smile" at Maijishan Grottoes
Maijishan Grottoes🏔, one of the four major grottoes in China. The whole mountain resembles a pile of wheat, hence the name Maijishan. Compared to the other three major grottoes, Maijishan Grottoes seem a bit more low-key and niche. It gives people the feeling of being as suspended as the Hanging Temple, with grottoes carved on the cliffs, which is extremely dangerous.
Maijishan Grottoes are famous at home and abroad for their unique "Eastern Smile" and exquisite clay sculpture art, and are known as the "Oriental Sculpture Gallery".
🎫Ticket:
Maijishan Grottoes: Full ticket 80💰(including botanical garden admission, grottoes ticket), concession ticket 40💰 Sightseeing car round trip 15💰 one-way 8💰
After visiting Maijishan Grottoes, you can take bus 35🚌 to 📍Tianshui Jingtusi

SoothingIndulgenceByMoore Tianshui, a city with a rich cultural heritage!
🍒 Tianshui, known as the 'Little Jiangnan of Longxi' and also as the hometown of Emperor Xuanyuan, is an important birthplace of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation, with a long history and numerous scenic spots.
🧚 If you don't know where to go for a holiday, why not come here for a stroll and some good food? It's a great choice!
⭐️ Recommended Attractions ⭐️
📍 Maijishan Grottoes
The scenery around the grottoes is beautiful, with lush cypresses and pines, wildflowers, and thick grass. Surrounded by green mountains on all sides, with thousands of hills and ravines, the cliffs of Maijishan are almost vertical to the ground. It is spectacular to see hundreds of caves and Buddha statues carved into such steep cliffs.
📍 Xianren Cliff
The biggest highlight of Xianren Cliff is the temple complex under the cliff, which still retains many Buddha statues from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The stone cliff and the lush forest are integrated, neither losing the majesty of the mountain nor the greenery of the trees.
📍 Fuxi Temple
Here, you can feel the strong cultural and historical atmosphere. Fuxi Temple is built along the street, with courtyards nested within each other, four entrances and four courtyards, grand and serene.
📍 Nanzhaizi
The layout of Nanzhaizi basically follows the traditional Chinese courtyard house. Hu's residence, although a courtyard house, is different from the courtyard houses in Beijing. Beijing courtyard houses, whether the main house or the wing rooms, are all constructed with a saddle roof structure, while Hu's residence, except for the main house and the back seat, uses the Tianshui residential construction method known as 'one-slope water', which has a strong local characteristic.
📍 Gangu Daxiang Mountain
Many halls in Daxiang Mountain are lined up along the ridge, extending from the foot to the top of the mountain. The 'Great Buddha Hall' in the sixth cave is famous. The Great Buddha is a semi-circular carved stone with clay sculpture, well-preserved above the abdomen, and the knees below seem to have been restored in later times.
📍 Wushan Shuilian Cave
Wushan Shuilian Cave is a natural rock cave about 50 meters high and more than 20 meters deep, with a constant trickle inside. During rainy days, the water flows straight down from the eaves like a water curtain, hence the name. It combines bas-reliefs, niches, hanging sculptures, and murals, integrating Buddhist culture from the Northern Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, which is unique in the country.
✅ Recommended Food
💫 Tianshui Guagua: The texture is very soft, and it tastes spicy and refreshing with seasonings like sesame paste, chili oil, garlic paste, and vinegar.
💫 Tianshui Sa Fan: Sa Fan is made from corn and other grains, turned into a paste, and eaten with homemade pickles, sauerkraut, shredded potatoes, etc.
💫 Jiangshui: It has the effect of cooling and clearing heat. The local Jiangshui noodles are a specialty, with a delicious and slightly sour taste that you must try if you have the chance.
💫 Pork Fat Box: Crispy, fluffy, and richly flavored.
❗️❗ Important Notes ❗❗
❇️️ The temperature difference between day and night in the northwest region is quite large, with frequent night rains, so it is recommended to bring a thicker coat and an umbrella.

Tianshui | Avoiding Crowds at Maijishan: A No-Wait Strategy
Tianshui tourism is finally heating up! The most impressive part of this trip to Tianshui was not the spicy hot pot, but the Maijishan Grottoes—it's like a Buddhist realm on the sheer cliffs!
❗️How to enjoy a crowd-free scenic spot?
(Don't go when it's crowded, or you'll be bumping heads with the person in front of you hhhhhhhh)
Tips:
📍1. The scenic area stops admitting visitors at 4:30 PM, so we plan to enter around 4 PM. By then, most tourists have finished their tours and left, allowing us to enjoy the site without disturbance, peacefully admiring and taking photos!
📍2. Take the sightseeing bus up, because walking up the slope can be tiring and time-consuming
📍3. It gets cool in the mountains in the morning and evening, don't forget to bring a jacket
📍4. Those with extreme fear of heights should be cautious, as you have to climb steps in the air (which is also the greatness of the Maijishan Grottoes). I have a mild fear of heights, but it's still acceptable to me
Wandering up and down the layered pathways, lingering among the statues, the colored sculptures of Maijishan always have an attractive power that makes people stop and linger. This power comes from the soul of the sculptures, sometimes innocent and cute, sometimes compassionate and approachable, always making one feel that this is the human world, not an unattainable religious realm.

A glance at the thousand-year-old Maijishan Grottoes
Maijishan Grottoes, one of the four major grottoes in China. If Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes is the 'Great Gallery' in the Gobi, then Maijishan Grottoes is the 'Sculpture Museum' on the cliff.
There are currently 221 grottoes in Maijishan Grottoes, with 3938 various statues of 10632 bodies, from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Two Song Dynasties, all showing different styles of statues and the continuation of statue craftsmanship over the ages.
📒: Unlike the grand style of Yungang and Longmen, the clay sculptures of Maijishan are restrained and gentle, full of the smell of the world. After the wind and frost, these excellent colored sculptures still shine.
📒: The ancients, with their devout faith, infused eternal beauty and Buddha nature into every Buddha statue in this grotto. Those worldly smiles, the smiles of the Buddha, carrying people's longing for a good ordinary life, are forever fixed in the grottoes of Maijishan in the depths of the Qinling Mountains.
🚗Travel:
In addition to chartered platforms and self-driving, Tianshui has a special travel bus line. You can also find a taxi or a networked car, round trip, remember to bargain. If you book a homestay in the scenic area directly, the homestay owner will take you in.
🎫Ticket:
The pass is 80 yuan and you can visit most of the caves, and some of the caves inside are charged separately.
⏰Opening hours 9:00-5:30, basically the staff of the scenic area will start to urge everyone to go out after five o'clock, and start clearing the field at half past five.
➡️Tour route
Divided into 1 and 2 lines, line 1 has to climb stairs to a height of 84 meters, mainly ordinary caves; line 2 includes 2 special caves, the route is flat, suitable for fear of heights, with elderly children. Looking at the flow of people, 80% will choose line 1.
Line 1 sees more caves, mainly concentrated in the downhill process. There are fewer caves on line 2, but you can see special caves, and the view of the three large caves is good. Judging from the broadcast in the scenic area, once it enters the holiday peak, it should be diverted like this. Non-peak is based on the ticket price of ordinary caves + separate special caves to visit.
➡️Tour time
Maijishan has two ticket checks (at the entrance of the scenic area and at the entrance of the park) and one sightseeing car check. The sightseeing car journey is about 3.5 kilometers. Line 1 tour takes about 1.5 hours, and line 2 observation should not exceed 1 hour.
➡️Travel time
It is recommended to set off at 7 o'clock, arrive at the sightseeing car entrance at 8 o'clock, queue for the sightseeing car for 5 minutes, queue for entry for 15 minutes, queue for diversion for 30 minutes, so that you can start the tour at 9 o'clock. If you come later between 9-10 o'clock, the parking lot of the scenic spot will be full and the road will be closed. You can only get off at the tourist distribution center, which means you have to take the scenic area bus to the entrance of the scenic area. It will take more time to queue at each point at least twice as much time.
➡️Do you need a tour guide
Absolutely unnecessary. The tour guides soliciting customers at the entrance of the scenic area will only send them to the entrance of the hospital, don't expect them to climb stairs and queue with tourists.

It is a solitary peak in the Xiaolong Mountains, 142 meters high, named for its resemblance to a haystack. Its grottoes began to be carved in the Later Qin period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sixteen Kingdoms, and continued to be excavated and built during the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and other dynasties. ⛰️Distribution of Maijishan Grottoes: The entire grottoes are divided into the east cliff and the west cliff. The grottoes on the east cliff are the most exquisite, such as the Nirvana Cave, Thousand Buddha Corridor, and Seven Buddha Pavilion on the Sanhua Tower. 🌟Highlights:
1. As a famous grotto in Gansu, Maijishan Grottoes is different from Mogao Grottoes, which amazes the world with murals, but it is famous for its exquisite clay sculpture art and is known as the Oriental Sculpture Art Exhibition Hall.
2. The Maijishan Grottoes are carved on the cliffs, the caves are 'dense as a beehive', the plank roads are 'flying in the sky', and they are stacked layer upon layer, forming a grand and spectacular three-dimensional architectural complex.
3. The statues here, the largest is more than 15 meters high, and the smallest is only more than 20 centimeters, reflecting the characteristics of the statues of various eras over a thousand years, and systematically reflecting the development and evolution of China's clay sculpture art.

📆Itinerary:
1. Route 1

🚗Traffic strategy:
1. Self-driving or taxi
2. There are buses from Tianshui city to Maijishan 🚌
📌Tips:
Special cave visits need to be booked in advance
Coming to Maijishan Grottoes in the off-season, I'm really very happy, with a super complete guide ready!
In winter, I thought I would be frozen to death in Gansu, but there is basically heating indoors, and the weather is also very beautiful, so it doesn't feel cold. Instead, there are fewer people, and the classic attractions seem to be specially opened for you, which is awesome! The tickets are also off-season prices, and the visit to the popular grottoes also comes with one-on-one explanation service, super detailed and serious version!
🚗🚗
Transportation:
When you get to Tianshui, it is recommended to stay in the new city, the old city is incredibly chaotic, rent a good car, although many people say to take the bus to Maijishan, it's very close, no matter how close it is, it's still thirty kilometers, off-season car rental is cheap, no one competes with you, the hotel has a parking lot, and there are plenty of parking spaces in the scenic area, and there is seamless connection with heating in the car, how good!
When you get to the Maijishan parking lot, remember to buy a battery car, it's not cold, there are fewer people, wait for more than ten minutes, don't walk, because you still have to walk after the battery car arrives, and you have to climb, don't waste your energy.
💰💰
Tickets: 45
Special Grottoes: 100-180 varies, I personally recommend Grotto 133, Grotto 44, (when you go to 44, it will open 45 along the way, and see it together, the same is true for 133, so make a good strategy in advance, don't buy it repeatedly on the same floor, you can see it across the railing.)
Explanation: General grottoes don't need explanation, just look slowly, special grottoes must ask for explanation, in addition, after entering the scenic area, there will be many 'wild chicken' explanations, don't listen to them, they can't enter the scenic area, it's useless to talk. It's not worth any money.
😔
Cultural and creative:
The cultural and creative shop is in a temple on the left hand side of the entrance, it's very small, the things are very expensive, very ordinary, it's not recommended to buy. (I hope they develop more!)
♥️♥️
Be sure to come when the weather is good, otherwise the steps are dangerous and slippery.
Don't be afraid of heights, my friend is also afraid of heights but it's basically okay if you don't look down.
But be sure to pay attention to safety, it's quite steep. Elderly and children must be accompanied and taken care of.
Strolling through the Maijishan Grottoes, the view from the high altitude is so thrilling!
Strolling in Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes
Being selected as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units, the strength of Maijishan Grottoes is undoubtedly, the ticket price of 80 yuan is also acceptable (you have to pay extra money to see the boutique grottoes ), the whole visit is walking on the cliff plank road is exciting .
The protection measures of the grottoes look very simple, many times tourists need to stick their faces to the iron wire net on the door to roughly see the content in the dim grottoes.
The large grottoes are relatively good to see, you can see many details, such as the dragon and phoenix flying lively on the Buddha's robe, lifelike

The Empire of Mist: Oasis in the Desert
It's Mogao Caves, it's Maijishan, it's Longmen Inn, it's the vast desert, but I never thought that arriving in Lanzhou for the first time would feel like entering the final empire of 'The Son of Mist'.
Lanzhou·Gansu The sci-fi dusk, the whole city is soaked in silent dust, and chimneys are everywhere. The road from the airport to the city winds around the mountain, factories and buildings seem to be embedded in a large sandbox, we only advance with the rising gases in the chimneys.
The setting sun often hangs between the mountain shadows on the road, there are no trees on the mountain, it's as neat as a ridge drawn by a child. The sunlight sometimes covers the earth with a filter of memories, as if the next frame is about to immediately cut back to the past. Steam punk, 20th century, industrial retro, extreme beauty Rad, frontier poets, end-of-the-world movies, all hinting at a seemingly different world.
Yellow River Iron Bridge As expected, traffic started to jam when we descended from the mountain into the sandbox, returning to the human world in blocks. By the time we reached the Yellow River Iron Bridge, it was completely dark, and the Yado Building in the distance cut down red neon lights like a blade. The lights on the iron bridge and the mountain are exquisitely luxurious, shining brightly from the low-key of the entire city, truly giving a sense of floating in the air.
The commercialization of the scenic area is quite standardized, but the range of products sold is very limited, which reminds me of the memory of being stunned by the main food on the street when I was full of expectations to go to the northern snack capital Kaifeng. In the following days, the delicious food is still the known specialties, the barley and malt added in the milk tea shop, sweet fermented rice, all kinds of small sprouts mixed with hot oil. Lamb, okay, but Ningxia is more delicious.
Maijishan Grottoes Maijishan may be the destination that has been planted for the longest time. It was planted when I was a student reading Liang Qichao's History of Buddha Images. I always feel that it's a wish that is always a step away but never starts. It's so beautiful that it's worth the trip, a visual feast for all ages.
The gentlest birth, the most peaceful worldly heart. The surrounding mountains all have perfect lines and layers, the Buddha and the sky are in perfect harmony, no matter how you convert spiritually, you will believe that they indeed exist with the heaven and earth.
Compared to the pleasant water in the south, what paradise, may have nothing to do with the northwest. But the echo of being human is so magical, no matter what era, where, you will see the non-existent pure land, find the power of life blooming in its call, bloom, go to the long term.
Maijishan Grottoes, one of the four major grottoes
Maijishan Grottoes
It's over three hours from Xi'an, the highway to the east of Tianshui is easy to travel, staying in a homestay in the scenic area, you can overlook the grottoes from the terrace, you can stroll in the scenic area in the early morning, the stream is gurgling, it's a natural oxygen bar, the grottoes open at half past eight, the ticket is 80 yuan, and you can finish the visit in about two hours, passing through a mountain cave 1.2 meters high on both sides.
Maijishan Grottoes is located in the Longshan jungle 28 kilometers southeast of Maiji District, Tianshui City, a famous historical and cultural city in China. It is named after its mountain shape which is similar to a farmer's wheat stack. It has beautiful ancient natural scenery and is known as the 'crown of forest and spring in Qin area'. It was created during the Later Qin period of the Sixteen Kingdoms (386--417), and has been excavated and renovated through more than ten dynasties such as the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing, etc. There are currently 221 caves of various sizes, 3938 statues of 10632 bodies, and murals of 979.54 square meters. Because of its large number of exquisite ancient clay sculptures, it is known as the 'Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall'. The large-scale sutra paintings in the 4th, 26th, 27th, 127th, 135th and other caves, such as the Western Pure Land, Vimalakirti, Nirvana, Lotus Sutra, etc., are the earliest and most complete large-scale sutra paintings in China, and they have very important research value for the development and evolution of Chinese sutra paintings. The murals and the cave niches such as cliff pavilions and tent-shaped niches carved on the cliff, which imitate architectural entities, provide vivid physical materials for the study of Northern Dynasty architecture.
The Northern Wei 'Fasheng Statue Stele', the Song Dynasty 'Ruiying Temple Re-Buddha Relic Stele', 'Sichuan Governor's Office Granting Land to the Public Stele', the Ming Dynasty 'Maijishan Exemption from Permanent Residence Grain Stele', 'Qinzhou Tianshui County Maiji Cliff Buddha Niches Inscription and Preface', as well as the numerous steles, cliff inscriptions and ink inscriptions in the 4th, 5th, 76th, 78th, 115th, 168th and other caves, are the first-hand documentary materials recording the development and evolution of Maijishan Grottoes.
Ruiying Temple was first built during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and has been repaired and renovated through the ages. The relic pagoda was first built by Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty in the first year of Ren Shou (601), and the existing one was rebuilt by Monk Yuanhui and others in the eighth year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1669). It is an important part of the cultural heritage of Maijishan Grottoes. The large number of pottery, porcelain, bronze, steles, calligraphy and painting, ancient documents, rubbings and clay sculptures preserved, especially the large number of ancient Buddhist scriptures from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as a small number of Taoist and social documents, have extremely high historical value. Some of them have been included in the national list of precious ancient books.
Maijishan Grottoes is now a World Cultural Heritage site, the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units, and a national 5A-level scenic spot.
Maijishan Grottoes
Visiting Maijishan Grottoes in winter, there are few people. The color of Maijishan is monotonous, but it does not affect the visit to Maijishan Grottoes. A unique mountain peak shaped like a wheat ear, from the Northern Wei Dynasty, the ancients used the trees of Maijishan to stack up to more than 80 meters, and carved Buddha mud statues from top to bottom. After the efforts of several generations such as the Northern Wei and Northern Zhou, there are 194 grottoes, including 54 grottoes on the east cliff and 140 grottoes on the west cliff. There are more than 7800 mud sculptures, stone mud sculptures, and stone carvings. The largest statue, the Big Buddha on the east cliff, is 15.8 meters high, and there are more than 1000 square meters of murals. Maijishan Grottoes are famous for their danger, early establishment, and uniqueness.

Have you ever been to Maijishan Grottoes in Gansu?
The Maijishan Grottoes were initially built during the Later Qin (384-417), flourished during the reigns of Emperor Mingyuan and Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei, and developed further after the first year of Emperor Xiaowen's Taihe era (477). It is said that after the death of Empress Yifu, the wife of Emperor Wen of the Western Wei, niches were carved here at Maiji Cliff for burial. During the Baoding and Tianhe years of the Northern Zhou (561-572), Li Yunxin, the Grand Commander of Qinzhou, built the Seven Buddha Pavilion for his deceased father. In the first year of Emperor Wen of Sui's Renshou era (601), a pagoda was built at Maijishan to bury the relics of a divine nun, and it was continuously expanded during the Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, becoming one of China's famous grotto groups. Around the 22nd year of the Tang Kaiyuan era (734), due to a strong earthquake, the cliff face of the Maijishan Grottoes collapsed in the middle, dividing the grotto group into two parts, the east and west cliffs.
Maijishan is known worldwide for its unique wooden bone clay sculptures and is a valuable asset for studying Chinese sculpture art.
