Sturt Lake is an artificial lake in the city of Columbia. Located on the west end of George Street, near the entrance to Stanley Park, it has an area of 16.6 hectares (41 acres), an average water depth of about 4 feet (11 feet deep), and is surrounded by a 1.79-kilometer (1.2-mile) long walking trail. It is also home to herons, swans and several species of ducks, and attracts many visitors for bird watching, while the southwest end of Lost Lake is home to visitors from the Stanley Park Society. Lost Lake occasionally freezes under the influence of cold waves; when the ice reaches a certain thickness, the Vancouver Park Board allows visitors to skate and play ice hockey on the lake.
