Longyou Grottoes
Located in Longyou, Zhejiang, the Longyou Grottoes are a group of underground man-made caves and one of the most advanced underground man-made structures in ancient China. They are also a wonder of the world in terms of underground space development and utilization. The Longyou Grottoes can be traced back to 212 BC and are known locally as the "Ninth Wonder of the World."
The Longyou Grottoes are located in a small mountain called "Tongtan Mountain" by the locals, 3 km north of the city. The mountain is only a few miles in circumference, but it contains 24 man-made caves of varying sizes and intricate layouts. Before they were discovered, they were all buried in water and soil, and the rock at the entrance of the caves had collapsed, so it was difficult to see them. The local government has now developed five of the caves for visitors to see. The shape and size of these caves are generally similar: the area of the cave halls ranges from a few hundred square meters to more than a thousand square meters; the height of the caves ranges from 20 to 40 meters; the entrances are rectangular; the walls are steep and the tops are arched; there are 2 to 5 large stone pillars in the caves, with cross-sections shaped like irons, and the largest ones require five people to hold them; the surfaces of the tops, walls, and stone pillars are all carved with fine diagonal patterns, resembling tiger stripes; there is a wide stone staircase from the entrance to the bottom of the cave, with a wavy shape; and there is one or two stone pools and artificial slopes at the bottom of each cave.
A large number of experts and scholars have put forward various speculations and arguments about the age and use of the caves: quarries, tombs, military depots, ice storage, megalithic culture, Taoist paradises, and refuges for rebellious miners, among others. When the Longyou Grottoes were first discovered, they were thought to be an "abandoned quarry," so they did not cause a sensation and remained unknown for six years. It was not until 1998 that they attracted the attention of the public. Today, similar caves have been found scattered along the north bank of the Qujiang River, with at least 50 caves in an area of 2.88 square kilometers. It is hard to imagine how such a huge underground project could have been completed with the underdeveloped technology of ancient times. The mysteries of the caves make visitors "curious when they enter the caves and puzzled when they leave."

The picturesque Longyou Tianyuan is a great place to take your kids on vacation.
It's a great place to take your kids, and it's a great value for money. The new Longyou hotel has large rooms, good service, and complete facilities. There are large outdoor slides, swings, rocking horses, seesaws, and an indoor children's playground (with ocean balls, wooden slides, climbing frames, and building blocks). The castle, swimming pool, chess room, gym, and KTV are all free. The parking lot has charging stations, so you don't have to worry about charging. Pets are allowed! The rooms are basically 50-60 square meters! There's a large balcony, which is very impressive! The room has a large balcony! The bathroom is separated into wet and dry areas! There's a bathtub (bathtub cover is not included, 10 yuan each)! The balcony is super large (with a sofa and table)! There are two paddling pools, both with men's and women's changing rooms; the public lobby area has a large activity space! It's perfect for families with kids! You can even charge your phone while you're eating!
Pet-friendly: This is a rare hotel that doesn't limit the size of pets (only cats and dogs are allowed), and doesn't charge extra cleaning fees! They just ask that pets are not allowed to roam freely and defecate anywhere!
🍽Food:
Longyou braised tofu, chicken feet, pig ears, and fried dumplings are all foodie favorites. The sliced rice pudding, large Beixiang dumplings, chubby scallion buns, soft and delicious Longyou rice cakes, and full pig intestines. The freshly steamed rice cakes are soft and fragrant with lard and wine. They're even more delicious when they're cold and fried.
👍Recommended attractions:
Longyou Grottoes are warm in winter and cool in summer, with a constant temperature of 17°C all year round; Guoshi Light Art Ecological Corridor, Redwood Town, Dananmen Historical and Cultural Block, Longyou Residential Garden, Longyou Museum, Youbu Ancient Town.
📝Tips:
The hotel is in a great location, it's convenient to go to the county town for shopping and eating, and it's close to all the major attractions. It's just across the river from Longyou Grottoes, and it's only a 15-minute drive from the popular Youbu Ancient Town morning market on social media. It's easy to check in with a foot on the gas pedal! The most important thing is to increase manpower! Such a big hotel! There aren't enough staff, almost every employee is working overtime (the front desk lady is still working from 8am to 10pm, helping out in other departments), and the manager is also "part-time", making the bed himself, smiling and welcoming, with a perfect attitude! It's not easy! It's been a hit since it opened! It's so busy!

Day1⃣️: Huan Time Art Corridor - Ting Tang Wei Village Rapeseed Flower Sea - Rosewood Town
Day2⃣️: Longyou Ancient Residential Garden - Longyou Grottoes
-
🌟 Huan Time Art Corridor
The character 'Huan' specifically refers to the river water in the Longyou section of the Qu River, aiming to depict the sparkling and glistening water. Art installations among the rapeseed flowers are everywhere, each with its own uniqueness. It feels like a treasure hunt game for tourists, full of vibrant life and bright sunshine.
~
The rapeseed flowers in Ting Tang Wei Village are in full bloom, and various art installations scattered in the fields add an artistic atmosphere to the countryside. You can take aerial shots, capturing the vastness among the flower sea. I especially love the concept bookstore in the rapeseed field, which is like one in Jingdezhen. Reading in the flower sea📖 is amazing.
The rapeseed flowering period here is very long, lasting until May.
🌟 Rosewood Town
Located near the ramp of Longyou Expressway. The main thread of cultural history depicts the architectural styles of the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with mostly rosewood materials and exquisite carvings.
🌟 Longyou Ancient Residential Garden
A collection of ancient southern residential architecture, the largest ancient residential relocation and preservation project in the country. It's hard to imagine how these pavilions, ancestral halls, and gate towers have 'walked' step by step to this assembly. Archways, flower halls, covered bridges... What you see here is the prosperity and reality of ancient times.
🌟 Longyou Grottoes
I can't figure out the history and origin of the 'ninth wonder of the world', but the awe I witnessed in person is really hard to describe in words. The temperature inside the cave feels much cooler. The stone carvings inside the cave are lifelike, and they are also pet-friendly👌

Longyou Grottoes
The Longyou Grottoes were the second stop on our Longyou trip, located in Xiaonanhai Town, Longyou County, hence also known as the Xiaonanhai Stone Chambers. They are listed as a key national cultural heritage site in the seventh batch. We visited the Longyou Grottoes more than ten years ago, but this time, the development of the scenic area feels particularly good, like entering a beautiful garden. The opened five grottoes have very proper cultural relics protection and safety measures, and they are also very user-friendly.

Longyou Grottoes | The Ninth Great Wonder of the World
Longyou Grottoes, also known as the Underground Pyramids, are hailed as the Ninth Great Wonder of the World.
Having never been to the Longyou Grottoes, I've always been fascinated by them and wanted to explore what they're all about. On February 8th, I visited the grottoes and experienced firsthand the difficulty and hardship ancient people must have faced when carving out these caves. Moreover, considering the lack of advanced technology in the past, how did they manage to construct such deep grottoes in an environment filled with carbon dioxide, where even candles would extinguish?
I also looked into the history of the grottoes. On June 9, 1992, Wu A'nai and three other villagers used four water pumps to drain water for 17 days and nights, finally revealing another mystery of the world that could be compared to UFOs. Led by Wu A'nai, they entered a mysterious underground world, grand and spectacular, full of bewildering wonders.
All five caves are connected, making the visit very convenient, walking from one to the next. The entire tour takes about 30-40 minutes to complete.
How to book?
Follow the Quzhou Culture and Tourism official WeChat account, click on the free tour, and all scenic spots in Quzhou are free to visit on weekdays. If you have time, you can come on a weekday to climb Jianglang Mountain, Lanke Mountain, Medicine King Mountain, and visit the Sanqu Stone Forest, as well as explore the Twenty-Eight Towns and the Root Palace Buddha Land.
