Most of the Longmen Grottoes date from the Sui and Tang Dynasties, with a small number from the Northern Wei Dynasty. However, most of them were weathered or stolen during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Most of the extant ones are from the Tang Dynasty and Wu Zetian period. It is recommended to drive yourself or take a taxi, but the taxi distance is still quite far. The parking lot of the scenic spot is far away from the scenic spot. It is recommended to take the official shuttle bus to and from the scenic spot. If you want a great view of the long stretch of carvings from afar, hop to the other side of the Yi River - there is a viewing platform where you can see a great panoramic view of the grottoes. If you’re looking for a place to escape new buildings and skyscrapers, Longmen is a good place for you. It’s doable in a day from Luoyang or Zhengzhou and you can have a nice walk around. Most pictures were taken with my DJI Mini 2.

It is truly a magnificent sight to visit one of China’s best historical site. A UNESCO World heritage site, the Longmen Grottoes 龙门石窟 is rich in thousands of grottoes, countless of Buddhist statues and inscriptions. Separated by Yi River, one can witness thousands of Buddha inscription and statues on both sides of the river. Longmen Grottoes Scenic area is divided into 4 sections: Caves in the Caves on the West Hill, Caves on the East Hill, Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan (Bai Juyi’s Tomb). The highlights are the caves located in the West hill. One can easily hike up to the cave and the best moment to capture the site is after sunset when the lights are lit-up. To visit the site in the evening, it is recommended to book in advance. I went there in the late afternoon almost to the closing time for daytime visit. I hired a tour guide and she suggested that I continue to stay on until sunset. I realised that many people are doing the same and hanging around the Fengxian temple to capture the evening shots. To go to the west hill and Xiangshan, you will need to cross the bridge to the other side.

Lotus cave. Longmen grottoes, Luoyang City. Well, this cave is very interesting from Buddhism study point of view. Whatever, visitors coming here to make a pictures of very beautiful creation. In the roof on top we can spot the lotus. But another one lotus flower made from stone is located in front of this cave where children like to climb and their parents make pictures. I would like to emphasize this cave was not restored or something. It looks like this after all centuries had been covered by soil until it was excavated.
