Yongzhou is not a well-known tourist destination. I discovered this hidden gem with its unknown history and beautiful scenery by chance during a two-day stopover on my way to Guilin. Yongzhou is a place where history, culture, and natural landscapes blend together, as depicted in Liu Zongyuan's "Record of the Little Stone Pond." It boasts well-preserved ancient cities and temples, rustic traditional villages, and picturesque karst geological landscapes. Liuzi Temple is located at No. 86 Liuzi Street, Lingling District, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province. It was first built in the third year of Zhihe in the Northern Song Dynasty (1056). It is a brick and wood structure. There are three buildings in the front and back of the temple, with flying eaves and upturned corners, which is extraordinary. It has been repaired through the dynasties and is dedicated to Liu Zongyuan and the Eight Masters of Literature of the Tang Dynasty! It is the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units!

Liu Zongyuan's Liuzi Temple is also here. 3️⃣ Pingzhou Academy There is an ancient academy on the river, which is very quiet. It is the place where the Xiangjiang River and the Xiaoshui River meet. It is also the first of the eight scenic spots in Yongzhou. You need to take a boat to get there. 4️⃣Xiake Ferry It is one of the five major ferry crossings in the ancient city of Yongzhou and can be called a thousand-year-old ferry. Because of Xu Xiake's travel notes about Chunan, the ferry was renamed Xiake Ferry and is now open for people to travel. 5️⃣Dongshan Scenic Area (Wumiao Gaoshan Temple)🏯 The Temple of Wu, also known as the Guandi Temple, was first built in the Ming Dynasty. Gaoshan Temple, also known as Fahua Temple, was first built in the middle Tang Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,300 years. Liu Zimiao, also known as Liu Zongyuan Memorial Temple, is an ancient architectural complex dedicated to the Tang Dynasty's distinguished literary figure and thinker, Liu Zongyuan. In 1956, it was announced by Hunan Province as a 'Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit,' and in 2001, it was declared a 'National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.' Liu Zimiao is located in Lingling District, Yongzhou City. It was originally built in the third year of the Zhihe reign during the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1056), and the existing temple buildings were rebuilt during the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty. Covering an area of 10,000 square meters with a construction area of 4,000 square meters, it is a brick-and-wood structure. Liu Zimiao has three depths and is three bays wide, consisting of the opera tower, the central hall, the God of Wealth Hall, the Goddess Hall, and the Stele Corridor of the Xiang Hall. It is grand in scale, unique in style, and rich in heritage. Entering the temple, you will be captivated by the exquisite and delicate ancient architecture: the flying eaves soar into the sky, and the intricate roof decorations seem to showcase the craftsmen's skill. Every brick, tile, stone, and piece of wood is so harmoniously arranged, man-made yet seemingly the work of nature, exuding an air of lightness, tranquility, and charm, as if narrating the beauty of the mountains and rivers and the spirit of the great people of southern Hunan. In the backyard of the temple, there are precious steles such as the 'Three Excellences Stele' and the 'Yan Song Stele,' which are known as 'national treasures.' Their carvings, paintings, and plaques are all from the hands of famous artists, making them highly valuable art treasures. Additionally, the temple also displays rubbings of stele inscriptions by numerous famous artists. Looking at the calligraphy of ancient writers, with its fluidity and exquisite composition, it transcends a thousand years and is vividly presented before your eyes, stirring the soul before returning to tranquility. I wandered and took photos slowly here, and without realizing it, I spent two hours. Outside Liu Zimiao is Yu Creek, and the famous Xiao Shitan described in 'Record of the Little Stone Pond' is right here. Following the stream, you can experience the secluded bamboo, clear ponds, and fish swimming in the air as described by Liu Zongyuan. Unlike the bustling Liu Zi Street, there are not many tourists here. This quietness amidst the noise, this detachment from the world, seems to transport us back to Liu Zongyuan's spiritual world, allowing us to better understand the mixed feelings he had when he was demoted to the south. I didn't know until my second visit to Yongzhou that the ancient city of Yongzhou is located in Lingling District. Last time I went to the northern Lengshuitan District, which is more than twenty kilometers away from Lingling. The ancient city of Lingling has been established as the earliest administrative division of Yongzhou since the Western Han Dynasty, for over two thousand years. It is also widely known thanks to Liu Zongyuan's 'The Story of the Snake Catcher' and 'A Record of a Little Stone Pool' being included in Chinese textbooks. Liu Zongyuan was demoted to Yongzhou for ten years, leaving behind the famous 'Eight Records of Yongzhou,' with 'A Record of a Little Stone Pool' being one of them. The Liuzi Temple is the best memorial the people of Yongzhou have for him, and not far upstream from the temple is the location of the Little Stone Pool. In order to recreate the scenery of the Little Stone Pool, the Yongzhou government blew up the dam that submerged it, which is in line with the repeated destruction and reconstruction of the Liuzi Temple. On both sides of the Yu Creek in the ancient city of Lingling, the ancient streets and lanes blend with the newly built antique-style architectural district. The pleasure boats on Yu Creek and tourists dressed in ancient costumes have become a scenic spot in the ancient city. Walking down along Yu Creek, you can reach the confluence with the Xiao River, which is especially beautiful at night. The confluence of the Xiao River and the Xiang River has a small island with a Pingzhou Academy on it. To get there, you need to take a ferry, which costs 20 for a round trip, and the entrance fee for Pingzhou Academy is 40. We didn't go to the island but walked along the riverside path to an abandoned ferry dock, where the view of the Xiao and Xiang rivers converging is also very beautiful.
