Historic buildings
The building of the Latvian Academy of Sciences was built after the Second World War from 1953 to 1956 as a gift to Latvia by workers and peasants from other Soviet republics. The Latvian Academy of Sciences Building is 108 meters high and is the first skyscraper in Latvia's history. It was designed by Lev · Rudnev and is a Stalinist building similar to the Moscow Seven Sisters, especially the main building of Moscow University. Latvians have given the building many nicknames, such as "Stalin's Birthday Cake" and "The Kremlin".
