On a recent trip to Lijiang (Yunnan province), I decided to explore the country side a bit. So i just chose a random location (close to a body of water) on the map, and we took a didi there. To our great surprise, we found this beautiful wetland park. It costs only around 30¥ to enter the park and you can spend the entire day there. You will see beautiful mountains, a scenic lake and a big variety of bird species. Right outside the park, there are even horse back riding tours. Lashi lake wetland park is located 14 km from Lijiang Old Town, excellent place if you have a few hours to space, or you wish a nice one day trip. This scenic spot is very popular for bird watching, also to experience the Tea Horse Road by yourself. This area is home of two minorities: Naxi people and Yi people. Additionally, this wetland is a Ramsar site. Horse riding can take between 30 to 90 minutes depending of the route you chose. Wetland park costs ¥30, or ¥50 if you want to experience birdwatching in boat. Most birds are types of gooses and ducks, although 57 different species have been identified to migrate during winter. Inside the park, you get to visit the museum, a Naxi people nature god museum and several corridors with beautiful scenery. There are many rose decorations for some reason. Also, there are few shops in the entrance area of the park. 🚣‍♂️ It’s only inside certain park area, not allowed to go to Lashi lake. You get to chose between kayak, paddle boat or small motor boat (managed by local). Lashi Lake Wetland is located in the middle of Lashi Dam, 10 km west of Lijiang City. It is the first nature reserve in Yunnan Province named after a "wetland". Lashi Lake was originally part of the ancient geosyncline in northwestern Yunnan. After the development of the Yanshan Movement in the Mesozoic Era and the orogeny of the Hengduan Mountains, it finally formed the current intermontane basin on the plateau from the end of the Pliocene to the beginning of the Pleistocene. The lake is 2,437 meters above sea level, covering an area of about 3,560 hectares, and consists of eight types of wetlands, including marsh meadows, inland tidal flats, forest swamps, shrub swamps, lake water surfaces, river water surfaces, ponds, and ditches.

The Lashi Lake Wetland in Lijiang is a place of beautiful scenery, especially the beautiful springs. The beautiful spring originates from the intersection of Wohu Mountain and Beidou Mountain. The spring water gushing out from the rugged rocks forms the Sister Pool. The water is as green as flawless emerald and so clear that you can see the bottom of the pool which is more than 6 meters deep. The place is densely forested, with flourishing flowers and plants, and is quiet and beautiful. Standing on the shore of Lashi Lake, you will see a wide and quiet lake. Under the clear and cold sky, the lake surface is glowing with green light. Small patches of wetlands divide the lake into bays of varying sizes. A group of cormorants were resting on the sparse willow trees in the lake; in the shallow bay and on the shore, there was a large group of wild ducks, some diving in search of fish and shrimps, some sleeping with their necks intertwined. Occasionally, two ruddy shelducks, which live together, would flutter into flight, causing nearby waterfowl to lazily flap their wings. In the distance, there is mist and from time to time you can see small shadows of birds swimming and flying in the forest.

After getting off the train, I checked the travel guide and was not sure whether to go to the ancient town or Lashihai Lake. I hesitated for a long time on the way and finally decided to go to Lashihai Lake. (Never take the minibus at the station, as the local drivers may be in cahoots with the horse farm.) After getting on the bus, I was taken directly to the Tea Horse Road scenic spot, which is only a few minutes' drive from Lashihai Lake.
