[2025 Atami Attraction] Travel Guide for LAND ART PARK「ACAO FOREST」 (Updated Feb)

#christmastrip ACAO FOREST is a facility consisting of 13 unique theme gardens on a vast hilly area of 650,000㎡ with a stunning view of the Sagami Bay. You can enjoy 4,000 roses of 600 kinds, seasonal flowers and herbs with the Atami blue sea and sky behind it. The design supervision and planting methods of this garden is handled by landscape designer Nobuo Shirasuna. Perennial plants such as foxgloves and lupines play a supporting role for the roses growth, so they are usually planted together. I visited a flower #themepark located about a 15-minute bus ride from Atami Station. The park is on the slope of a mountain, and as soon as you enter you can board a free bus that will take you to the top. From there, you can enjoy the flowers as you go down. At the beginning, there is a stylish cafe designed by Kengo Kuma and a photogenic swing, so you might be wondering whether to relax there from the beginning or to look at the flowers to a certain extent and then go back up the hill. A person who wants to see some nature to escape their busy cities should visit Akao Herb and Rose Garden. If you are in Shizuoka, Atami City will surely appear in your radar. After all, Atami City is a popular city during Summer because of its beaches. However, once a person is in Atami City, you will only hear about their famous Onsen 温泉 (Hotsprings). I did not expect to find a huge, and I say hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, garden housing variety of flowers, trees, and many cafes. Atami believes that it is no stranger to many small partners who like Japan's deep freedom. It is located in the northeast of the Izu Peninsula, next to the sea. April to June each year, the Akao Herb Rose Garden in Atami is a paradise for flowers. This rose garden is on the hill, and you can take a minibus to the top of the mountain to see the endless blue ocean. All the way down, you can walk slowly. Everywhere you are surrounded by colorful flowers, the variety of roses accounts for the vast majority. It is a good place for little fairies to take pictures and is really super beautiful! There is also a super beautiful design coffee shop and net red card seascape swing, and there is a lavender ice cream and rose products souvenir shop under the mountain.

Spanning a vast area, it’s adorned with blooming flowers and whimsical props ideal for photo opportunities. Despite its size, the park features a convenient shuttle bus service, making it easy to explore. I recommend visiting the park before noon for the best lighting; I arrived at 3:30 PM and found the photos lacking in brightness. Fortunately, as the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a beautiful pink hue, creating a stunning backdrop for my pictures. I also had the pleasure of visiting **COEDA House**, a café designed by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The structure elegantly mimics the shape of a tree, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding landscape. I enjoyed a delightful cake and coffee there, making for a truly pleasant afternoon. Overall, ACAO Forest is a must-visit for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike!

#2024wish Ended up here by accident, but it was a beautifully maintained forest/garden. When you get there, you pay a small fee to be ridden on a bus to the top of the mountain and then you start to make your way down. It's not that bad of a climb but if you have leg problems you may want to consider taking the bus down which I saw some people do! In 2024, I want to travel more.

#2024wish This is a garden built on the side of a hill with an excellent view of the sea. One is driven to the top and then left to walk down at one's own pace. At the top is a small shrine and large Japanese stone garden with evergreens. Then in February there are vast areas of yellow mustard flowers interspersed with flowering plum and cherry blossoms. Lower down one comes to the rose garden and then more formal gardens with various plants. Well worth a visit. Excellent photography possibilities and a good place for fresh air and to stretch one's legs. I want to come back here this year.

#2024wish On a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this gigantic flower paradise is the size of 13 Tokyo Domes (a stadium in Tokyo) and is home to 12 themed gardens. The canola flowers and Atami cherry blossoms blooming in January indicate that spring is near. In April you can see 100,000 tulips. From May to June is the best season to see 4000 roses from 600 species. Over the summer holidays the park holds eco tours for children. In fall you can enjoy the herbs and see the fall roses at their best. Not only is there a type of flower to see every season, but you can also experience making herb soap, shopping, as well as eating seasonal desserts and lunch. I want to go back to Atami in 2024.

Soga Shrine is a small Shinto shrine located on top of Akao Herb and Rose Garden. As the bus takes you on top of the garden's hill, you will stop by at the front of the stairs to Soga Shrine. People who goes to Akao definitely goes up to Soga Shrine first to pray and send in their well wishes.
