I got to know this café because of actor Chow Yun Fat. This is his favourite place for milk tea in Hong Kong, and if you are lucky, you may bump into him in the coffeeshop. Lan Fong Yuen is one of the oldest “Cha Chan Teng” (local café) in Hong Kong. It is well-known for its silk-stocking milk tea. The way of making the milk tea is that they use a fabric triangle shape bag to filter the tea, making it extra smooth to drink. When you stand close to the café, you can smell the strong aroma of tea. They also serve delicious traditional French toast, pork chop buns, and other Hong Kong style set meals. Highly recommended. #meethongkong Throwback to before Covid hits the world Milk Tea is the Real Deal This is basically an older Hong Kong style cafe and for comparison it’d be like an American diner. So you have to come in with reasonable expectations. It’s by no means fine dining or the prettiest of places but you will get the experience of a legitimate Hong Kong cafe style meal. The Milk Tea is reason enough to come here. The gentlemen in the sleeveless shirt takes his job seriously and puts out a delicious cup of tea. You can get it hot or cold and I generally enjoy the cold one as it’s a nice refreshment on a warm day. Coming here for the first time though I opted for the original hot milk tea. Add sugar to suit your own personal taste. I’m not affected by caffeine so I can’t comment on the strength of the tea but the “tea taste” is strong. Milk teas that I have had at other shops have sometimes tasted watered down. That is not the case here. I found the servers friendly and they chatted with us in Cantonese. Some of them have their quirks and may come off as rude but Cantonese can sometimes sound like an angry language. Lan Fong Yuen is a tea restaurant with a long history. In its early years, it was operated as a street shop in Dai Pai Dong. He is also the founder of Silk Stocking Milk Tea. Currently, it has different branches in Central, Sheung Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui. This time we went to dine at the original restaurant in Lan Fong Yuen in Central. Take the MTR to Central Station and walk for about 10 minutes to get there. The environment of the original Lan Fong Yuen Central store is small and the table spacing is quite crowded. Although the dining environment of other new stores is more comfortable, the founding store has its own unique retro feel! The retro signboard outside is really atmospheric and easy to photograph! The queues during meal time are very scary. Even though the tables are turned over very quickly, they will share the same table with other customers. But for internal use, you still need to be mentally prepared to wait for at least half an hour for the shot to start. In addition to the silk stockings milk tea which is very delicious, the laoding, pork chop buns and western toast are also very delicious. The average consumption per person is about NT$250~400 I recommend that if you come to Hong Kong, you can come and experience the famous original stocking milk tea store!
